An MP is demanding an explanation for a fine of nearly $17,000 imposed on a Waikato farmer for removing weeds from his own land.
NZ First's Richard Prosser says Waikato Regional Council prosecuted Okoroire sharemilker Bas Nelis, a farmer who had previously won environmental awards.
"He was raided by six council investigators and the police because he was clearing a gully of pest plants before replanting it with natives," Mr Prosser said on Wednesday.
"His environmental work has resulted in a $16,875 fine under the Resource Management Act for unlawful use of land and disturbing a riverbed."
Mr Prosser says he's writing a "please explain" letter to Local Government Minister Paula Bennett.
"There's genuine anger in the Waikato from farmers, former and current councillors, as well as from Federated Farmers," he said.
"That tells me the council has stuffed up big time."
The fine was imposed by Environment Court Judge Melanie Harland.
She acknowledged in her decision the previous environmental work carried out by Nelis, but also said he should have known better because of that.
Council chief executive Vaughan Payne described the case as "difficult and unusual," Fairfax reported at the time.

AN interior designer has started a new company in central Winchester.
In a bid to bring a more personal London-chic service to Winchester Emma Hooton has launched Emma Hooton Ltd, based in Jewry Street.
Mrs Hooton, who trained at KLC Design School in Chelsea Harbour, began her career in South Kensington for a top London interior designer before going out on her own four years ago.
Now she runs a studio working with other trained designers, interior architects and project managers to bring the most up-to-date styles to Winchester homes.
Her company has seen a huge increase in demand since she started with clients calling from as far Berkshire and West Sussex.
Many of our clients are Londoners relocating to the countryside, looking for a London-calibre designer who can offer a more personal localised service with access to all the top craftsmen and specialists outside the city as well as London contacts where required, Mrs Hooton said.
One of the key aims for us as a company is to develop long-standing relationships with trusted, talented, quality craftsmen in and around Hampshire to give clients a higher, more personal level of service and better value than those based in the city.
Mrs Hooton said one key area shes seen a rise in trade for is the boutique hotel look a mix of classic and contemporary using soft velvet and natural linens.
We also work on much of the technical design that is required in the early stages of new build or renovation projects such as furniture layouts, extensive lighting and electrical designs, detailed drawings for joinery, kitchens and bathrooms as well as the finishing schemes, she added.

Ask any interior designer, and theyll tell you its easy to spend $4,000 on a single piece of furniture. Designer Beth Mattei has $4,000 to furnish and design an entire two-bedroom home, and one that doesnt even belong to her.
This Napa woman recently teamed up with a nonprofit called Designed from the Heart. Matteis task is to fully furnish one of 76 townhomes on a former naval base in the Long Beach area for a homeless female veteran and her children to live in. The project is called the Blue Butterfly Village, named after a blue butterfly preserve nearby.
Its such a privilege to be able to work directly with these female vets, she said.
Mattei admitted that when she first considered joining the project, I was kind of afraid to take on such a challenge.
But then she became determined. Somehow this will work out. Im sure it will. Thats the fun part, to see how things get connected, she said.
After hearing about the project from her sister-in-law, Mattei decided to lend a hand. Its a good fit for her skills, she said. For a number of years, she worked as an interior designer, at one point working for Thomas Bartlett.
With just $4,000, she needs to outfit the whole townhouse from top to bottom, she said.
That includes all furniture, furnishings, kitchen, bath and other daily living items for a two bedroom home.
The budget wont go very far at all, she said. That means the designers have to use their resources such as asking for donations, hunting for bargains and scouting out sources.
So far, weve been able to find a few things, but, its very challenging.

NORTH AUGUSTA, S.C. (WRDW) -- Mark Rogers and his family watched his home burn down Monday morning. Fire investigators say it was due to old wiring and now a neighbor who watched it all happen is concerned for her and her family's safety as well.
Stay-at-home-Mom Victoria Braddock watched as the Rogers' family watched their home and new car they bought the day before, deteriorate. Braddock says she's concerned now because her family had trouble in the past with electricity.
"We've also had some light switches that were not working because of the wiring, once again it wasn't a big deal to us because we had multiple switches so we could just use another one," said Braddock.
Now, everything to do with electricity has become a big deal to the Braddock's. Electrician Ray Johnson says a flame can spark with the misuse of any circuits, but especially in homes built in the 1950s all the way up to the 1970s.
"If you overload a circuit it's a fire hazard if you have drop cords don't use multiple drop cords just one drop cord," said Johnson
Johnson adds overloading a circuit is easier to do in an older home because it likely doesn't have regulators. In newer homes regulators help maintain the circuit breaker so they don't overheat.
"Yea that doesn't seem like a major problem but as a result it could be," said Braddock.
Braddock adds they plan to contact their landlord about an inspection to make sure everything is up to date. It's a lesson she wants her family to learn so that what happens across the street doesn't happen to them.
