Traditional Malay wood-carvers a rare breed
JOHOR BARU: The traditional Malay woodcarving is one of the country's most priceless heritage that dates way back into the country's history.
Its intricate motifs today still grace palaces, gazebos, pergolas and traditional Malay houses, and does not fail to impress all who view it.
Those skilled in traditional Malay woodcarving have to undergo a process as intricate and tedious as its designs as well, making them a rare breed of artisans.
One of them is Mohd Nor Zaini, 35, whose passion for woodcarving has led him to learn the trade and set up his own business in Batu Pahat, Johor.
He first entered the field in 2000, by enrolling for an 18-month course in a Wood-based Furniture Industry at the Mara Training Institute.
After that, he worked for eight months with a company making private yachts using Burmese teak, before pursuing his studies in the Art of Woodcarving for three years.
Mohd Nor then worked on improving his skills by taking on jobs at carpentry workshops around Muar. He used the money he made to buy woodcarving machines.
"Besides carpentry stints at the workshops, I also took on odd jobs until I could raise enough money to start my own business at the end of 2006," he told Bernama, who met him while on a media tour with Kraftangan Malaysia to Johor.
He said the first machine he bought was a router. He then added on a jointer, planer, a sawing machine and a lathe.

The much-awaited 2014 Metro Manila Film Festival (MMFF) officially starts today, Christmas Day, with eight must-see entries that, according to MMDA Chairman Francis Tolentino, are expected to break all box office records. These are Bonifacio: Ang Unang Pangulo, English Only, Please, Feng Shui 2, Kubot: The Aswang Chronicles 2, Magnum Muslim .357, My Big Bossing, The Amazing Praybeyt Benjamin 2, and Shake, Rattle & Roll XV.
My Big Bossing lead actor Vic Sotto said: This is a three-in-one offering na pwedeng panoorin ng three generations. Youll really enjoy it. He noted his film is child-friendly as well because it co-stars Ryzza Mae Dizon and Alonzo Muhlach, two smart and witty kids wholl definitely capture the hearts of viewers with their respective roles.
In the trilogy, Ryzza plays three different roles. During the shoot, she herself would ask for another take if she wasnt contented with her first performance. This child star will surely amass more fans with this movie, which we highly recommend for everyone to see mostly because of her. She and Bossing Vic are a fun tandem to watch. The wildly cheering audience at the red carpet premiere of the movie last Monday night at SM Megamall couldnt get enough of them.
Alonzo, on the other hand, reminds us of his dad, Nio who was the original Boy Wonder of Philippine Cinema when he started in showbiz at age five. Like Nio then, Alonzo at four is precocious and talented.
Ten years after Feng Shui made a killing at the tills, Kris Aquino and Chito S. Roo (Feng Shui, Sukob, The Healing) reunite for Feng Shui 2. The film co-stars for the first time Kris and Coco Martin, who plays Lester, now the owner of the bagwa. Both Chito and Kris, who co-produces the movie with Star Cinema, are impressed with Cocos performance in his very first horror movie.
Kubot: The Aswang Chronicles 2, directed by Erik Matti, stars Dingdong Dantes as Macoy. It is produced by GMA Films, Reality Entertainment and Agosto Dos, with Dingdong as co-producer. Also now part of a franchise, Kubot boasts of impressive special effects and action sequences. The movie introduces a new kind of aswang called kubot, with their leader played by awarded actress Elizabeth Oropesa.
The Amazing Praybeyt Benjamin stars Vice Ganda; Bonifacio: Ang Unang Pangulo stars Robin Padilla; and English Only, Please is topbilled by Jennylyn Mercado and Derek Ramsay; Magnum Muslim .357 is led by ER Ejercito and Sam Pinto; and Shake, Rattle & Roll XV, with Dennis Trillo and Carla Abellana in the lead.
Tidbits: Happy b-day greetings today, Dec. 25: go to Angelito Banayo, Ricky Gallardo, Dr. Noel Tanopo 111, Antonio Gamboa, Salvador Rivera, Mila S. Catan, Jess Soriano, Wengweng Romero, Hanzel Villafuerte, Ador Saluta, Bettina Carlos, Noella D.C. Alegre, and Joyce Ramirez Dec. 26: Sen. This Christmas season, Filipino moviegoers can choose among the four sequels, an historical period film, an action flick and a romantic comedy that will be shown as part of the 2014 Metro Manila Film Festival.
Now on its 40th edition, the MMFF will run from December 25 to January 7, 2015.
Get the chance to know more about the mainstream entries namely Bonifacio, Ang Unang Pangulo; English Only, Please; Feng Shui 2; Kubot: The Aswang Chronicles 2; My Big Bossings Adventures; Muslim Magnum .357; Praybeyt Benjamin 2; and Shake, Rattle and Roll XV. Now celebrating its 40th year, the MMFF is held in recognition of the role of the film industry in providing artistic depictions of both this countrys stories and history, as described in the Metro Manila Development Authority website. The MMDA supervises the annual film festival along with key members of the film industry.
This year, there are eight official movie entries in the Mainstream section of MMFF 2014:
Bonifacio: Ang Unang Pangulo depicts the life of Andres Bonifacio, tagged as the father of Philippine revolution.
Lead actor Robin Padilla revealed that the production cost alone of this period film already reached P90 million.
His ex-girlfriend, Vina Morales, is cast as Andres' wife Gregoria "Oriang" de Jesus. According to the actress, she still felt the chemistry that they became known for at the height of their popularity during the '90s.

In the romantic comedy English Only, Please, Derek Ramsay and Jennylyn Mercado find love in the most unexpected circumstances. Derek is cast as Julian, a balikbayan who wants to exact revenge on his ex-girlfriend (played by Isabel Oli). He hires Tere (played by Jennylyn Mercado) to help him translate his hate-filled letter from English to Tagalog. Can his tutor help him finally move on from his bad breakup?

Leopardstown. Click here to bet.
Willie Mullins is confident Vautour is "ready for anything" ahead of his first Grade One assignment over fences in the Racing Post Novice Chase at Leopardstown.
The five-year-old got last season's Cheltenham Festival off to a flyer for the Irish with a mesmerising display in the Supreme Novices' Hurdle and he went on to follow up at Punchestown, capping an unbeaten campaign.
He could not have been more impressive on his chasing bow at Navan last month and will be long odds-on to beat five rivals on Boxing Day, with Paul Townend deputising in the saddle for Kempton-bound Ruby Walsh.
Mullins said: "Vautour was awesome in Navan first time over fences, but when he won the Supreme he jumped those hurdles without making any mistake. He looked like he was on a different set of rails.
"I thought Ruby was going a mad pace (at Cheltenham), but Ruby has this clock in his head and he knew he was going a pace he was happy with but the others were struggling and couldn't keep it up. He was foot-perfect at every hurdle.
"It is lovely to watch horses stand off all the time but you need a horse that has to be able to shorten up and put in a quick one when they are wrong.
"I think he's ready for anything. I think he looks the part and everything he's done so far he is the part. I'm looking forward to him."
Vautour is reopposed by the Gordon Elliott-trained Clarcam, who was eight lengths adrift at Navan and has since got off the mark over fences himself at the same track.
Noel Meade's Chancol is two from two over fences, most recently landing the Grade Two Craddockstown Novice Chase at Punchestown.
