Pearl River Valley Electric continues restoration from Columbia tornado

    - December 25, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

    COLUMBIA, MS (WDAM) -

This is a news release from Pearl River Valley Electric Association

Pearl River Valley Electric Power Association (PRVEPA) crews were out in force this morning responding to outages caused by a tornado that struck the Columbia area yesterday. The storm caused significant damage to primary power lines along Highway 98, as well as to the Lakeview subdivision and East Marion High School areas. Damage was also sustained in a few areas in Lamar County.

As of 8:00 a.m., approximately 2,100 member-consumers were without service in the two counties, down from a peak of 4,100 last night. Line crews from the Association's district offices in Hattiesburg, Purvis and Wiggins worked with Columbia crews well into the night assessing damage and beginning restoration. This morning, additional line crews from outside the area and tree timming crews arrived to help with the effort. Overall, more than 150 linemen began work at daylight today.

There are more than 100 poles that will need to be replaced, and that number may go up as we continue to assess the damage, said Randy Wallace, PRVEPA's general manager. Many of the lines affected along Highway 98 are large, double circuit lines that carry heavy loads. Those lines are more difficult to rebuild, but at least they are accessible. We know we also have lines down in more wooded, rural areas, which is why we have called in the tree trimmers to clear the way. We plan to make as much progress to full restoration as we can today.

Pearl River Valley Electric Power Association serves more than 47,000 member-consumers in parts of 12 counties in south Mississippi. The Association's headquarters is in Columbia, with district offices located in Hattiesburg, Purvis and Wiggins. Storm-related information can be found at http://www.PRVEPA.com.

    SAFETY/PRECAUTIONS

Anyone who sees a broken or burning wire should stay away and call Pearl River Valley Electric or local authorities. Warn others to keep clear of the fallen line and avoid contact with trees, fences or anything else the line may be touching.

    PORTABLE GENERATORS

During extended outages, some members may use portable generators at their homes or businesses. It's very important to use all generators correctly. Do not use an extension cord to plug a generator into a household outlet. This can cause serious injury to you and/or restoration crews. Instead, only connect appliances directly to the generator. If you have any questions about the use of a generator, visit http://www.PRVEPA.com or call PRVEPA and ask for generator assistance.

Mt. Pleasant Township authority to take over sewage area

    - December 25, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

The Mt. Pleasant Township Municipal Authority's board of directors recently announced it will assume control of the Shupes Run sewage area from township officials.

At the authority's recent meeting, board President Charles Naggy said it would take about 30 days for the assets to transfer to the authority.

Assets include two pump stations and all of the lines in the project, which covers parts of the township just across the border from Mt. Pleasant Borough, including areas such as Slope Hill Road and Low, Shaft and Bridgeport streets.

With the authority taking on Shupes Run, there should be no noticeable changes except for the employees running the pump stations, and the tap-in fees going forward for new connections will be $2,200, Naggy said.

Authority solicitor Les Mlakar said the township, the municipality and Mt. Pleasant Borough will need to come to an agreement regarding fees borough officials have talked about instituting due to emergency repairs at its treatment plant earlier this year.

During the meeting, the board also voted to keep monthly meetings on the fourth Tuesday of each month for 2015, with the exception of November and December due to the holidays.

Those two meetings will be held on the third Tuesday of the month.

Township resident Greg Krynicky addressed the board again regarding its response to a complaint he previously filed in connection with damages he claims were caused to a property he owns in Calumet during construction of sewage lines.

Krynicky told the board he submitted new photographs of the purported damages on the property.

Mlakar told Krynicky he had assessed the damage at $200, which Krynicky did not find acceptable, he said. Mlakar informed him that the case was closed, and if he had a problem with it to file suit against the board.

New transportation service starts for Sugar Grove Township residents

    - December 25, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

SUGAR GROVE Seniors and disabled residents in Sugar Grove Township who need a ride to the doctor's office now can take advantage of a new transportation service.

The new program allows seniors age 65 and older, along with those residents with disabilities, to schedule rides for medical appointments between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays. Sugar Grove Township and Aurora Township recently approved an intergovernmental agreement, paving the way for the program.

The program already had been in place in Aurora Township as part of Pace Suburban Bus Service's Ride in Kane program. Sugar Grove Township Supervisor Tom Rowe said the new agreement extends transportation services for seniors and disabled residents in Sugar Grove Township to all area hospitals and medical clinics.

So far, the response to the new program has been slow.

"Only four Sugar Grove Township residents have registered for the service," Rowe said Monday. "We're trying to get the word out. We're hoping things will pick up next year."

Residents who want to participate in the program must first call the Aurora Township office at 630-892-1999. Rowe said he is encouraging people to register right away, even though they might not be using the program for a while.

The cost is $4 per ride within a 10-mile radius and $1.50 per additional mile. A companion may ride along for free.

"It's curb-to-curb service," Rowe said. "They come right to your home and pick you up at the edge of your driveway."
