For the majority of homeowners, the relationship with their kitchen is a significant long-term commitment to both function and aesthetics, one that can last 30 years or more. According to the 2014 U.S. Houzz Kitchen Remodeling Survey, 25 percent of those choosing to remodel have kitchens that are more than 30 years old, and another 41 percent are updating kitchens that are anywhere from 16 to 30 years old. Houzz found that most kitchens last two to four times longer than the typical U.S. marriage (eight years) and duration of car ownership (nearly six years).
We already know that kitchens are the biggest driver of discretionary spending in the remodeling market, said Nino Sitchinava, principal economist at Houzz. As the economy has improved, many homeowners who delayed spending on kitchen updates feel like they now have the means to remodel. We should continue to see an uptick in discretionary spending on home improvements into 2015.
Kitchen renovations are a major investment, commanding the largest spending levels among remodeling projects. Given the considerable longevity and cost, homeowners are making choices to ensure they can live with their kitchens for many years to come, from products that last to designs that stand the test of time. When purchasing kitchen products, quality is the top driver for appliances and paint, and design style tops the list for purchasing lighting fixtures, cabinets and faucets. Homeowners are sticking to the classics with finishes like white cabinets (49 percent) in Shaker (37 percent) or raised-panel (22 percent) styles, granite countertops (45 percent) and stainless steel appliances (83 percent).
Given the long-term relationship homeowners have with their kitchens, making the space compatible with family and lifestyle is key. Ease of storage and entertaining are top priorities, along with organizational features, such as a built-in pantry, pullout shelves, deep cabinet organizers and built-in pet bowls. An open-concept layout, bar with seating (27 percent) and built-in wine storage (21 percent) make kitchens great places in which to spend time with family and friends. Other highlights from the survey include:

By Staff Writer Bryan Construction to build new medical building
Bryan Construction won a $3.5 million contract to build the core and shell of a new 34,000-square-foot medical office building in southeastern Colorado Springs.
After tenant finishes, the two-story structure will ultimately house several medical tenants and specialties, including imaging, primary care, lab services, urgent care, physical therapy and orthopedics.
The Broadmoor Commons Medical Office Building will be built on Lake Plaza Drive, off the intersection of Lake Avenue and Venetucci Boulevard. Construction is expected to begin in January with completion in September, said Jennifer Taylor, manager of marketing and business development at Bryan Construction.
Weve successfully completed hundreds of thousands of square feet of medical space, said Doug Woody, executive manager for Bryan Construction. There should be little to no impact on the neighbors or traffic flow.
The contractor built the Harrison School District 2 Administration Building and is remodeling the interior of a medical building for the Kaiser Fountain Health Plan east of Memorial Park. It has finished projects at Fort Carson, Memorial Hospital, Penrad Imaging, Premiere Army Medical Clinic and more.

The former home of the St. Paul Saints soon will be made ready for construction of an office-warehouse building, thanks in part to pollution cleanup grants from the state of Minnesota.
The Dorothy Day Center in downtown St. Paul, a former meatpacking plant in South St. Paul and a long-vacant riverfront manufacturing site in Hastings are all receiving a boost from the same fund, which is geared toward redeveloping polluted properties.
In all, the Minnesota Department of Employment and Economic Development, or DEED, has issued $6.5 million in remediation funds to 17 projects across the state. The largest grant totals $1.25 million to convert Midway Stadium on Energy Park Drive into a "flex" office building that can accommodate light-industrial manufacturing.
Additional projects include cleaning up the old Hudson Manufacturing site in Hastings, a proposed children's museum in Mankato, residential and office buildings in Minneapolis and Blue Earth County and a senior housing complex in Vadnais Heights. Each grantee must provide matching funds.
DEED's Contamination Cleanup and Investigation Grant Program funds environmental analysis or remediation at future redevelopment sites with the aim of boosting the property tax base and creating or retaining jobs. The program has been around 21 years and accounts for some 75 percent of funds devoted to brownfield and polluted site clean-up statewide.
In St.
Contaminated land in downtown St. Paul that had once hosted a gas station and auto repair business soon will provide housing and supportive services for the homeless. DEED awarded $369,000 for the Catholic Charities' Higher Ground project at the remodeled Dorothy Day shelter facility.
In Hastings, $256,000 will help cover the cleanup costs at the former site of Hudson Manufacturing, an agricultural sprayer. The 3.8-acre site will be turned into apartments, a hotel, restaurant, art space and events center. The city plans to cover matching costs.
Dakota County and the South St. Paul Housing and Redevelopment Authority will use $358,000 in DEED funds to clean up a 5.7-acre site that had been used as a meatpacking and processing site. They'll replace it with an office and warehouse as part of the BridgePoint Building Park.
Another $172,000 will help clean up a former gas station, bowling alley and restaurant in White Bear Lake. The 5-acre site will be redeveloped into a 136-unit senior housing facility called the Waters of White Bear Lake.

In the following video, 3D printing specialist Steve Heller interviews Fred Fischer, director of fused deposition modeling and PolyJet applications at Stratasys , about the company's newest 3D printing products. It showcased them at last month's EuroMold, the world's largest 3D printing conference, held each year in Frankfurt, Germany. During the segment, Fischer also sheds light on what EuroMold means for Stratasys, as well as the importance of creating 3D printers that offer higher throughput.
Stratasys investors should expect that the company will continue creating products and services that fulfill its core value of "changing people's lives by revolutionizing the way things are made."

Steve Heller: Steve Heller here. I'm joined today with Fred Fischer. He's the director of Fused Deposition Modeling and PolyJet applications at Stratasys. Thank you so much for being with us today, Fred.
Let's talk about EuroMold. Obviously, this is the conference where everything happens. How do you feel about this year's EuroMold, and what were some of the most surprising things that you've seen this year?
Fred Fischer: EuroMold for us represents one of the most important trade shows and events in our industry per year.
Every year I think one of the things that we're both proud of and impressed and slightly surprised about is really the overall turnout, the amount of attention that additive manufacturing is getting in comparison to all of the other technologies and items that are on display at EuroMold.
This year represents yet another step-function change in the amount of people and I'll say overall interest in our industry.
To me, if I had to say what's -- maybe it's surprising, but it's yet a continuation of a trend that we've seen before -- are the amount of prospects, or the amount of market that comes to us that already understands 3D printing to some extent, but maybe they don't understand all of the details and all the full capabilities.
