Google's Google'sNest may be partnering with the worlds largest homesecurityfirm,ADT ADT, in a move that could signal the companys interest in ramping up its presence in homesecurityservices, according to a conversation Forbes had withADTCEONaren Gursahaney.
The two companies are workingto connect Nests internet-connected home productsa thermostat as well as smoke and carbon monoxidealarmwithADTsPulse system that allows its customers to control their securitysystem through a mobile app.
Weve had discussions with Fadell and his team, saidGursahaney in a phone call, referring to Nestscofounder and CEO, Tony Fadell. Weve had discussions with Nest inintegrating their thermostat with the Pulse platform.
Tucked far away from Silicon Valley inBoca Raton, Fla.,ADTis looking for opportunity in the burgeoning smart home industry. There have been a flurry of do-it-yourself home security products coming out of the tech industry. That could start hurting ADTsbottom line (if it hasnt already) and ADT is fighting slowing customer growth. In addition to Pulse,ADT started a partnership with IFTTTIf This Then That, a service that allows users to chain website and devicesto hook upwith other connected hardware such as Jawbones fitness trackers and the Philips Philips Hue LED bulb in the cloud. But witha $6.1 billion market cap and seven million customers, its got some time before these smaller players start making serious dents.
Palo Alto, Calif.-based Nest, which was acquired byGooglein January for $3.2 billion, has become the big playerin the smart home industry. Its already shown interest in homesecurityworld with its own acquisition ofinternet-connectedsecuritycamera-maker Dropcam for $555 million. Dropcam was even pitched as a product to bring the end of home security giants like ADT when it started in 2009. WithADTsseven million customers paying a steep monthly service fee for a homesecuritymonitoring systems, it looks like an attractive opportunity for a startup to offer a much cheaper and simpler alternative to consumers.
One hole theADTpartnership could help plug up for any Nestsecuritysystem is a homesecuritymonitoring service. Dropcam already has a premium service for storing video feed in the cloud, but the professional monitoring that ADT has could be added as a more expensive premium package.
What they love isADTsseven million customers, 4,000 sales representatives and the relationships we have with fire departments and other emergency services, sothat when there is an alarm we can dispatch the right people,Gursahaney said.
A premium monitoring servicecould fit in well with Nest products. Before Nest officially announced its smoke and CO alarm productthe Protectin October last year, reporter Jessica Lessinwrotethat a subscription monitoring service was being considered. We havent seen that feature yet. It would be expensive to roll out a feature like this, as it would entailhiring and employing a call center. An ADT partnership could help with its massive call center infrastructure.
We dont have anything to share on the topic at this time, Nest spokeswoman Zoz Cuccias said in an email.

U.S. Cellular is expanding into the digital home automation and security world with their new OnLook Digital System, in addition to their traditional wireless offerings.
Industry analyst Jeff Kagan offers comment.
We are watching the wireless industry expand, change and grow in a variety of new ways. US Cellular has not seen the kind of growth in wireless that larger competitors have seen in the last several years. So moving into this new market segment sounds like a good idea if it can help US Cellular show solid growth again. Says Wireless Analyst Jeff Kagan.
US Cellular is not alone seeing this as a growth opportunity in home automation and security services. Other companies see the same opportunity.
US Cellular is following AT&T Mobility Digital Life and Comcast Xfinity into this new security space.
We dont yet know how these new competitors and new thinking in this space will change the industry dynamics. However new competition from AT&T Mobility, Comcast and now US Cellular is increasing innovation and excitement for the first time in a long time. Its turning the pressure way up on traditional security. Says Telecom Analyst Kagan.
Will increased competition decrease pricing? Will it increase innovation and new thinking in this space? We dont have all the answers yet, but we do know that this is good news for consumers who are always looking for new and innovative ideas in home security, which has been one sleepy industry until recently. Says Kagan.
US Cellular Onlook Digital System is now available in the state of Iowa and the Tulsa Ok market. They say this is a self-installed home automation and security system that can be managed by smartphone, tablet or computer.
US Cellular is partnered with Alarm.com, which is a cloud connected home software provider which runs on US Cellulars 3G CDMA network. There are mutltiple choices of services available to customers.

FORT WAYNE, Ind. (21Alive) -- This holiday season brings plenty of opportunity for burglars to ransack your house.
Home security experts say if you're going out of town, even if you have a security system, make sure you lock your doors and windows.
Nate Routsong of Simplx Security says you should also check your timer lights to make sure they're programmed for winter hours.
"A lot of people do have timer lights. We encourage you to set those, make sure that they are set correctly. With Daylight Savings, it gets dark differently than it does in the summer and so you want to make sure that it's appropriate for the time of year that it is. This may be the first time that you're traveling since the summer and some things may need to be adjusted," Routsong says.
Never, ever post anything to social media -- that goes for your kids, too.
Just because you trust your friends list, your information doesn't necessarily remain private.
"When one of your family or friends likes that then all of a sudden, it may post to their friends or other people that they liked what you said. And then all of a sudden somebody that you may not even know will find out that you're gone, and it just makes you very vulnerable," Routsong says.
You could also leave a car in the driveway so would-be burglars think someone is home.
And make sure if you have an alarm company, that it knows your new phone numbers and you know your password.

Over the next 15 years, the number of people 60 or older in Colorado is expected to more than double, boosting the need for long-term care and services that enable older adults to live independently in their homes.
Keeping needy senior citizens in their homes will require an expansion of services like transportation, meals-on-wheels, counseling and nutrition education, according to the Colorado Department of Human Services.
To meet that need, the agency is asking for an additional $4 million next year, which would raise state funding for Area Agencies on Aging to $21.3 million.

"We have to make sure our budget reflects seniors as a priority. This $4 million will ensure that we have services that are needed to keep our seniors in their homes," said Rep. Steve Lebsock, D-Thornton, who plans to introduce a bill seeking the money for senior services.
The graying of the workforce is a historically unprecedented demographic shift that will continue past 2040, said Bob Semro, health policy analyst for The Bell Policy Center.
The implications of as many as 1 million baby boomers leaving Colorado's workforce will have enormous impact on the state's tax base, Semro said. Not only will the income that older adults pay in taxes shrivel, employees who have older family members will be losing days at work to take care of their relatives.
"Do we have the workforce, the infrastructure to support that? Like any business, we need to plan ahead to determine how we are going to deal with this and maintain the highest quality support we can provide without doing damage to the state budget," Semro said.
AARP and Area Agencies on Aging, which are both backing the increased budget proposal, are also calling for creation of a study group to identify and plan for dealing with long-term issues involving an aging population.

In most instances, a baby or young children are receptive to a vicinity's energy, both kind and unkind.
If I am too busy to do the feng shui audit for them, I will ask them to do the following.
Babies are the best gurus in feng shui. The rationale behind this is simple when a certain unease or unkind energy is radiated, a baby is more receptive than an older person and will either cry or show signs of uneasiness. Therefore, your hunch should tell you not pick the apartment that you're checking!
But if you enter a flat and the baby looks calm and happy, you should pick such an apartment.
Bringing along other family members at flat inspections is important as this will establish whether they like the place to begin with. Based on my experience, children who are less than 10 years old are also receptive to the environment, but not as much as toddlers.
Feng shui is all about finding the right place for the right people with the right kind of energy. The nature of a site and the energy that blends with its inhabitants create a harmonious and balanced energy. Such energy brings out the best in a person.
If the energy is not conducive for certain reasons, this will be reflected by the reaction of the baby, who is more receptive than adults.
Fen
Such meeting points, together with the roads leading to and from buildings, as well as the traffic inflow and outflow near the vicinity, will affect the energy level. Such energy radiates in a subtle manner. When a person is in a relaxed mode, he or she is prone to feel this energy.

MANILA - Actor Coco Martin showed off his favorite vehicles to "Feng Shui" co-star Kris Aquino on her morning show "Kris TV" on Tuesday.
Martin said his three favorites are a black BMW, a white Dodge Challenger and a red Mini Cooper.
The award-winning actor explained that he considers the black BMW his lucky car and that he uses it when closing a business deal.
"Kapag black good for business," he told Aquino.
As for the white Dodge, he noted that since most muscle cars are black, having it in white makes it stand out.
"Ang red, kapag gusto mong magpa-cute sa girl," Martin said of the Mini Cooper.
Martin also showed off a Ducati motorcycle which he received as a present from Rep. Anton Lagdameo, the husband of his "Walang Hanggan" co-star Dawn Zulueta.
