GOLDEN An historic Golden bar that lays claim to being one of the oldest bars in Colorado is shedding its saloon style for a more family-friendly feel that will include an updated aesthetic and a rooftop patio.
"Truly, the Buffalo Rose needs renovated more than any other building on main street," owner Kenny Lee said to Golden's Downtown Development Authority at its Dec. 15 meeting.
The Buffalo Rose is a bar and music venue with a western vibe that hosts rock, country and blues acts. Lee is now sole owner of the business after buying out his former partner earlier this year, he said at the meeting.
Lee revealed plans to completely renovate the interior and exterior of his Bar and music venue at the corner of 12th Street and Washington Avenue to include a 7,000-square-foot rooftop patio, expanded venue area and improved and a more open dining room with garage doors that open up to the sidewalk.
Lee acknowledged that the interior of the building, which spans nearly half a block, is "dark, a little foreboding." He said the renovation will create a more family-friendly environment, an updated commercial kitchen and a venue that could be used for weddings and other events.
"It's a strategic place in Golden and it needs a facelift," he said.
Rick Muriby, Golden's planning manager, said the city has been in a conversation with Lee about the Buffalo Rose's renovations.
"Staff is glad to see they're re-investing in the structure and staying in town and adding to the business community," Muriby said.
Much of the conversation has been through the historical preservation board.

Talk about a bad day. Policein Iowasay a man set his own house on fire, then crashed his truck right into this convenient store. Surveillance cameras catch it from different angles. He wasn't finished either. He then led police on a high speed chase, but they caught up to him a short time later.
Christmas carolers on the front lawn are common this time of year. But they probably didn't bring an orchestra with them. Carolers in New Jersey brought a 20 piece brass band to back up their singing. They're called "Improv Everywhere" and they surprised five families last night with the moms acting as accomplices. The concert included Santa and even paper snow.
Finally a Florida spa owner is featuring a beer spa. The treatment includes a suds bath, a beer face scrub and beer bod wrap. It's not cheap, 80 bucks for a 50 minute treatment. The owner claims it detoxifies your body and makes your hair shiny. The liquid by the way is non-alcoholic.

BILLINGS - At least one homeless person dies each month in Billings, and the bone-chilling winter temperatures play a large part.
The homeless who have died were remembered on the front lawn of the Yellowstone County Courthouse on Friday for the 21st annual Homeless Vigil.
About 100 people attended the vigil with luminaries in hand.
Friday is the longest day and shortest night of the year, marking the start of winter, the hardest time to survive for the homeless.
Health is a major factor in homelessness, RiverStone Healthcare officials said, as those without a home tend to die 30 years earlier on average than the typical life expectancy.
Clarence Salley, RiverStone's case manager for homeless health care, pointed to exposure as a huge factor contributing to poor health.
And once these individuals have been afflicted by poor health, they generally cannot afford to seek treatment.
RiverStone's Healthcare for the Homeless program has helped more than 2,100 people in the last year.
During the vigil, RiverStone's CEO John Felton said the community should use the term "people experiencing homelessness," not "homeless people."

The British actor takes the reins for the first time in more than a decade
British favourites Kate Winslet and Alan Rickman have reunited for Rickmans first film as a director in more than a decade: A Little Chaos. The upcoming romantic drama, which Rickman has also written, is centred round Winslets widow Madame Sabine De Barra, a landscape architect who is recruited to design the gardens of King Louis XIV.
Kate Winslet stars as a landscape gardener challening sexual protocols
Rickman plays the French monarch and Matthias Schoenaerts plays master landscaper Andre and Winslets love interest within the gardens of Versailles.
Stanley Tucci and Danny Webb also star in this British period piece that was showcased to largely positive reviews at the Toronto International Film Festival in September.

The Guardian reviewer gave the film three out of five stars and described the performances as "excellent".
She continued: "Winslet manages emotional honesty with anachronistic confines and Schoenaerts escapes with dignity.
"Though ones tolerance for Stanley Tucci as a camp aide with a heart of gold wears slightly thin, he is at least ever so good at it after the 800th time."

DAMN! This is a historical period we can TOTALLY get behind!
Kate Winslet stars in the upcoming A Little Chaos where she plays Madame Sabine De Barra, a candidate up for consideration to become the landscape architect of the Palace of Versailles.
[ Related: Kate Winslet & Leonardo DiCaprio Are STILL BFFS! ]
The flick was directed by none other than Alan Rickman, who also stars as King Louis XIV, and it looks like it's gonna be a full of tragedy, love, sexytimes, and flowers.
Seriously, there looks like there's gonna be a lot of floral shots in this film!
Ch-ch-check out Kate in the trailer (above)!!!

Our message in a nutshell: No, the first step to a remodel is not to call a contractor. Design comes before construction and each professional has their expertise.

Many of our friends and acquaintances are kind enough to tell us they enjoy reading our columns. Other than that, however, we dont get a lot of feedback. So, it was with interest the other day when we received an email commenting on our efforts.
The author was a man with a personal interest in architecture and a professional background in interior design. His comment was that many of the photographs that accompany our articles left something to be desired in terms of interior design, and he recommended that we considered upgrading the performance of our firms current interior designer.
Many medium and large architectural firms do employ a full-time interior designer or even a whole department of interior designers. Our firm, however, is small and we do not have an interior designer on staff. His comments, however, caused us to think about the philosophy of our firm.
We started our firm to bring architecture to the "masses" to real, everyday people. In our previous firm, we seldom worked with clients with budgets less than $1 million. These clients always used interior designers, and the results were generally worthy of publication in glitzy design magazines. At the same time, we noticed that we regularly received phone inquiries from people regarding how to proceed on remodeling their homes, but their budgets were too small for that firm to serve.
The result was that in 2003, we took a deep breath, left our well-established employer, and started a company designed to help homeowners who want good design in their lives, even though their budgets are more "normal" than those served by most architects.
For the last almost 12 years, we have had the privilege of working with 900 clients and uncounted numbers of "investigators" who have come into our office to find out what an architect does, how much they cost, and why would one want to hire one anyway? We have spent countless unpaid hours educating people about the concept of good architectural design and the necessity of having a master plan before one undertakes a home remodel.
Our message in a nutshell: No, the first step to a remodel is not to call a contractor. Design comes before construction and each professional has their expertise. If you wouldnt be comfortable with us swinging the hammer to build your addition, you shouldnt feel good about a contractor designing it.
