Secaucus office building gets new tenants

    - December 19, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

One Harmon Plaza in Secaucus is getting several new tenants, commitments that mark more than 46,000 square feet of leasing activity since the property changed hands in February, according to Cushman & Wakefield Inc.

In the first deal, eAppeals Commercial, which specializes in medical billing and revenue management for hospitals and large physician practices, leased 7,025 square feet at the property, where Cushman & Wakefield is the exclusive leasing agent.

The Hollywood, Fla.-based company relocated its regional operation to the Harmon Cove office building from Clifton, where its landlord was Mountain Development Corp., which acquired One Harmon Plaza in partnership with PCCP LLC earlier this year for $11.5 million.

PKB Engineering has leased 2,401 square feet at One Harmon Plaza, relocating from Lyndhurst. And Noble Construction Group, which moved to Secaucus from Jersey City last year, is expanding its space by an additional 2,665 square feet, according to Cushman & Wakefield.

The new owners of One Harmon Plaza landed two other tenants at the 192,000-square-foot class A office building earlier this year, with Penn Jersey Advance Inc. taking 22,000 square feet and FolioDynamix taking 10,500 square feet.

One of the property's anchor tenants is The Jersey Journal, which moved there in January. Penn Jersey Advance was a company formed after a reorganization at Advance Publications Inc., parent of The Star-Ledger and The Jersey Journal.

Cushman & Wakefield is marketing the remaining vacant space in the building, including one contiguous block of 48,000 square feet with Hackensack River views.

IN THE GARDEN: Christmas time is a time for a little colour

Christmas bouquets light up a room

According to research, fresh flowers lift everyones spirits and are the gift that makes people the happiest, especially so during these cool, dark days.

Fresh flowers add so much colour to the festive season and they do not have to cost a great deal. Garden centres, florists and some larger stores all have super selections at this time of year. Although prices will vary, always buy quality and look for both fragrance and varieties that last.

With proper care, their lifespan can be almost doubled. Cleanliness is the single most important factor in making fresh flowers last. Dirty vases are no place for fresh flowers. Not only should they be clean but a few drops of bleach should also be added to the water to kill any bacteria that can reduce the capillary action of water flowing up the stems. The water should be warm and the addition of a packet of floral preservative will greatly extend the lifespan of your cut flowers. Curiously, Sprite soft drink is one of the best floral preservatives.

It is always a good idea to re-cut the stems on all fresh flowers the moment you receive them but it is very important for you to make that cut while the end of the stem is held underwater. Special machines are available to florists for doing just that. Another re-cut should be done in about a week to keep that water flowing. Research has also proven that exposure to constant, rather than fluctuating temperatures, increases the lifespan of flowers. In other words, keep them at a reasonably cool room temperature rather than in a hot sunroom by day and in the cold at night.

With so many great local growers in our region, the selection of fresh cut flowers is truly amazing. Fresh cinnamon-scented carnations and long-lasting chrysanthemums are very traditional but I would suggest trying a few different flowers that have great keeping qualities as well. Locally grown anthuriums are unique and look stunning when combined with Christmas greens and berries. They are also very reasonably priced, as are cymbidium orchid stems, another long-lasting flower. Colourful, exotic alstromerias fit in nicely with any bouquet and will go the distance even with mums. If you are really tropical minded, South African proteas last and last.

Spring flowers are now here and ready to bring a breath of fresh colour to brighten our winter spirits. Tulips, pussy willows and iris push aside those winter blues.

Some of the most fragrant flowers are Oriental lilies, Polianthes tuberosa and freesias. Just a few stems are sometimes enough to fill your whole room with a delightful perfume.

To accompany these flowers, I suggest you use some traditional Christmas greens. Noble and silver fir boughs are very dark green, fragrant and classy looking. They are also flat and easy to work with. The soft, wispy branches of white pine are certainly another favourite, both for perfume and longevity.

    Astrodome's restoration bath underway

    - December 18, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

    HOUSTON -

The Astrodome is getting an expensive bath in hopes of restoring the iconic stadium.

The process began Wednesday after it was delayed by weather earlier this month. Sky 2 aerials showed workers on scaffolding, washing down the exterior walls.

On Friday, the Urban Land Institute will release preliminary recommendations following its recent study of the Dome. We'll be sure to bring it to you on Local 2 News and Click2Houston.com.

    Earlier story

Green Team Services, a Houston window cleaning service, is testing the Eighth Wonder of the World to determine the best way to wash the Dome.

Brett Robinson, president of Green Team Services, said they use environmentally friendly cleaning solutions that will be delicate enough to preserve the icon, but should also be able to restore the exterior to look like new.

The project is expected to cost $63,800 and was scheduled to begin Monday. Robinson said while they are still determining the best way to move forward with the cleaning and the contract, the actual cleaning phase might not take place for another week.

Harris County leaders said the cleaning should help prevent further decay.

Since 2009 when the Astrodome was decommissioned it seems like countless suggestions have been thrown around for what to do with the Dome. Most of which have come with a lot of debate and last November voters decided against making it a massive convention space.

Caught on camera: Tire smashes through window, hits man

    - December 18, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

    HOUSTON -

A 77-year-old janitor counts himself lucky to be alive after a truck tire smashed through the window of a medical clinic where he was working and struck him late Tuesday night.

Manuel Mendoza told Local 2 News through an interpreter, "It was sort of like an explosion."

Mendoza and his wife were cleaning the 45 Clinic in the 8200 block of Gulf Freeway at around 10:45 p.m. Mendoza was moving a chair in the waiting room when security video shows the tire smashing through the window, pushing the chair in his hands aside and knocking Mendoza to the floor. He stayed there for several minutes, apparently dazed.

Mendoza was taken to Memorial Hermann Hospital by ambulance and treated for cuts and bruises, but he was found to have no major injuries.

The tire, which was still attached to a brake drum, apparently came off a truck traveling inbound on the Gulf Freeway. It rolled across the freeway and feeder road and into the clinic's parking lot where a second security camera shows it smashing into the window.

The clinic's owner, Dr. Joseph Sleiman, just happened to be passing the clinic that night on his way to the airport when he noticed the ambulance in front of his clinic and stopped to investigate.

"The man is very lucky. I'm so glad that he's OK," he said.

Sleiman believes more than luck was involved in Mendoza's survival.

"I believe, probably because Christmas, God was here. This is what I believe because this is a miracle," he said.
