Valley Home Services Company Receives $12.5 Million

    - December 18, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

On-demand home-services provider Serviz received a second round of funding of $12.5 million led by a Silicon Valley venture capital firm.

The Sherman Oaks company has now received a total of $20 million in the five months since its launch in Los Angeles and Orange counties.

Serviz provides an online platform to schedule and pay for handymen, plumbing and electrical work, carpet cleaning and appliance repair. The company works with licensed professionals who do the work. It was co-founded by Zorik Gordon, founder and former chief executive of ReachLocal Inc., a Woodland Hills online marketing company.

PointGuard Ventures, in Menlo Park, led the Series B investment round that included prior investors Gordon, Andy Sheehan, and Stibel Investments. The first round was led by Groupon Inc., the deal-of-the-day website, in Chicago.

Gordon said the additional money will allow Serviz to expand the home-repair categories now offered from five to 20 and move into 20 additional geographic markets.

This latest round is a strong validation of our momentum to date and the size of the opportunity ahead of us, he said, in a prepared statement.

Affordable units you can heat with a TV

Jeremy Brooks, a Walsh Construction superintendent on the Orchards at Orenco apartment project in Hillsboro, posted a sign in his trailer that reads Nothing on this job is typical.

    Thats not an overstatement.

When Orchards at Orenco opens in 2015, it will be the largest passive-house building in North America. The 57-unit Phase 1 is being built to the superinsulated standards of the movement that began in Europe as passivahus and is slowly spreading to energy hog America.

Passive house projects built in the Portland area typically are higher-end single-family homes. But Orchards at Orenco is being built by Portlands Reach Community Development, a nonprofit housing developer that hopes to rent the apartment units for $611 to $733 a month.

Heating bills will be minimal, since passive houses use the highest-known standards in energy efficiency. The airtight membrane at Orchards will be two to three times tighter than normal.

A passive house lives and dies by its insulation. Architects and construction workers must minimize drafts and thermal bridges metal pipes or other components that can transfer heat quickly between inside and outside. Installing one leaky window here could be a disaster in terms of wasted energy. Catching it and fixing it could be very costly, so quality control is key, according to Brooks.

    Costs higher

Orchards at Orenco will cost 11 percent more than traditional construction, according to project architect Michael Bonn, of Ankrom Moisan. The added costs come from a mix of labor and materials, including a sophisticated ventilation system to assure air flow.

Where the Tyvek has been stapled, it must be taped over with Siga Wigluv, a high-tack tape that costs $75 a roll. And Bonn chose stainless steel flashing over cheaper steel.

The brick will last 200 years, but if you use normal steel flashing it starts to rust in 25 years. Then you have to peel off the expensive brick to get to it, and thats a cost.

Outdoor slot machines activated at casino

COLUMBUS Toledos riverfront casino Wednesday wasted little time activating a total of 34 slot machines on two outdoor smoking decks after state regulators approved the plan.

The Ohio Casino Control Commission approved the plan for Hollywood Casino just as it did with similar proposals for voter-approved casinos in Columbus and Cincinnati in October.

Smoking is not permitted inside the casino under Ohios ban on indoor public smoking, but it is allowed on outdoor patios that are open on at least two sides.

Penn National Gaming Inc. raised the metal screens protecting the patios and installed heating elements in the roof to accommodate those who prefer a cigarette with their slots.

The casino installed 22 machines on a smoking deck on one side of the casino, and 12 on a smaller smoking deck on the other side.

Solar Energy Becoming a Key Component in the Connected Home

    - December 18, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Some of the most important innovations happening in energy today are happening far from the national media headlines. But these small changes will go a long way to making power more reliable, competitive, and local, with solar energy playing a central disruptive role that could dominate energy in the next century.

One of those moves happened yesterday, when SunPower bought a $20 million stake in Tendril and agreed to license its Energy Services Management Platform software. Here's what the deal means over the next few years.

SunPower's vision for a connected home. Image source: SunPower.

What this means for residential solar At its core, Tendril is essentially an energy data company. It collects and analyzes data about consumers' energy usage patterns, primarily learned from partnerships with utilities. SunPower can use this data in its installations to optimize a home's renewable energy consumption, provide stored energy when it's needed, adapt to changing policies for solar, and even improve sales by finding its ideal customers.

You can think of SunPower's capabilities with Tendril as a piece of the home of the future. SunPower will provide local energy production with solar panels, and with energy storage and connected devices SunPower can intelligently plan energy production and consumption based on consumers' desires. If a consumer wants to consume as little energy as possible the system can be set for that, just as it could be set to consume as much of your own energy production, or optimize for cost if there are rewards for sending energy to the grid at peak times. All of this will work in the background, similar to a car's eco mode, but it'll work to make energy more dynamic and controllable for consumers.

This will also be important for sales in a diverse number of locations. Different states and countries compensate solar energy producers in different ways, and in the future, demand response, dynamic pricing, and even net metering may look different than they do today. With intelligent energy production, consumption, and energy storage, a world of possibilities are opening up to adapt to the future.

SunPower isn't going to control the smart home of the future, but it'll be a big piece of the pie. It will tie into a system like Home Kit for iOS or Control 4, which are the central controls for smart homes. It'll feed data to these systems, and from there washing machine cycles, air conditioning, and more can be controlled based on a consumer's desires.

Other small innovations impacting energy This isn't the only innovation happening in solar, and some of the industry's most important advances have happened far from the headlines. SolarCity 's acquisition of Zep Solar lowered installation time and cost, making solar more accessible to consumers.
