ARCHITECTS in Davao Region are told to get an Asean architect accreditation in order to become competitive in the coming Asean Economic Community in 2014.
Arch. Benjamin K. Panganiban Jr. said by becoming accredited Asean architects by the Professional Regulation Commission (PRC), architects in Davao will have more access to growth and opportunities in the region.
Panganiban, who is the only Asean accredited architect from Davao City, said accredited Asean architects will be able to partner with other Asean architects, and this will serve as a venue for an exchange on new architectural ideas, trends, and technologies.
He said the United Architects of the Philippines (UAP) and the PRC are working hand-in-hand to encourage local architects in getting an Asean architect accreditation.
Panganiban said the application for the accreditation has a minimal fee of P5,000. After that, they will go through a series of interviews with the PRC.
Applying architects are also required to have five years of experience, continuing professional studies, and a field of specialization. Renewal is every three years.
He said architects coming from the Philippines have the edge over other Asean architects due to the Filipinos natural ingenuity and creativity.
In 2013, only 52 architects in the country applied for the accreditation and on July this year 40 were given Asean architect status.
There are only three Asean accredited architects from Mindanao, Panganiban and two others from General Santos City and Cagayan de Oro City, the rest are Luzon-based architects.
Panganiban said there were only a few architects coming from Mindanao because the application had to be done in Manila.

Washington County-based Millcraft Investments said Tuesday it secured the first of several retail tenants for a building it is planning on the site of Downtown's former Saks Fifth Avenue department store.
Fogo de Cho Brazilian Steakhouse will occupy space on the ground floor of a building that Millcraft is dubbing 350 Oliver. The building's street-level retail space will be topped by a 585-space parking garage and six floors of condominiums.
Construction of the retail space and parking garage is expected to be completed in 2016, at a cost of $35.5 million. Work on the condominiums would begin after that.
Fogo de Cho operates 24 restaurants in the United States and nine in Brazil.
There are hundreds of millions of dollars being invested on Smithfield Street and Fogo de Cho will be a great complement to the growing number of hotels, apartments, condos and offices being developed here, said Millcraft President Lucas Piatt.

The $56 million Domus Group/Coles development, Lotus, will include 155 apartments. Photo: Supplied
Plans have been lodged with the ACT government for the redevelopment of the Dickson car park into two supermarkets and 155 residential units.
ACT Treasurer Andrew Barr announced in March this year that Coles and Aldi supermarkets, apartments, specialty retail stores and office space would be constructed at the site.
The new Dickson Group Centre, which is a joint venture between Coles Group Property Developments and the Doma Group, will be built on the existing car park on the corner of Antill and Badham streets.
Pending ACT Planning and Land Authority approval, construction of the $56 million project is expected to begin in mid-2015.

Traders in the area had previously expressed concerns about the development, saying the lack of car parks during construction could sink local businesses.
The plans for a temporary 100-space car park next to the Dickson Pool to alleviate this concern also raised the ire of residents, as 27 trees would be cut down to facilitate it.
In a statement Coles confirmed that in response to community feedback the Land Development Agency had identified an alternative location closer to the Dickson retail centre.
Final negotiations with Coles and the current landowner of the site are under way.

Shaw Heights has a reputation.
A doughnut hole in the midst of Fayetteville, the Cumberland County neighborhood has remained neglected as surrounding areas have been annexed by the city.
The area is known for drug activity. Earlier this year, a 3-year-old boy was shot and killed when hit by a stray bullet while sleeping in a mobile home park along Shaw Road.
A stream of pedestrians has worn dirt trails along the side of the narrow street where there are no sidewalks. Vacant and crumbling homes dot the landscape.
But Fayetteville officials are exploring ways to redevelop the neighborhood that lies along the edge of Fort Bragg.
"It certainly looks to us like a doughnut hole we might want to fill in," City Manager Ted Voorhees said.
Voorhees said the city, along with the county, has a responsibility to focus on the quality of life for all its residents, in the city limits and in adjacent areas.
"In an area that has significant under-investment, if that is contributing to poor quality of life, contributing to a crime problem, then we need to do something about it," Voorhees said.
Last year, the city asked the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill's School of Government to analyze four scenarios for development there. They were to include various combinations of military and market-rate housing, retail space and public facilities such as a high school, library and recreation center.
But since the report was commissioned, there has been a shift in the military landscape, with Fort Bragg facing troop reductions and opening military housing to retirees and Department of Defense civilians.

Cabinet Ministers at a media briefing
The Cabinet has moved to pass a vote of no confidence in Acting President Dr Guy Scott and have with immediate effect asked him to resign his position.
Reading a signed statement on behalf of all Ministers gathered at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Harry Kalaba flanked by other key Cabinet Ministers said that the actions of Dr. Guy Scott are now a threat to National Security and they have since informed the Central Committee of the PF on their decision.
The cabinet has since directed the Secretary to Cabinet working together with the Attorney General to ensure that an urgent Cabinet Meeting is immediately convened with the agenda to discuss the possibility of replacing Dr. Scott as Acting President.
Below is the full statement
17TH DECEMBER 2014
SUBJECT; AN EXPRESSION OF VOTE OF NO CONFIDENCE IN DR. GUY SCOTT AND PROPOSED REMOVAL FROM OFFICE OF ACTING PRESIDENT
We have called this Media Briefing to make profound pronouncements to the nation.
Following the death of our beloved President, His Excellency Mr. Michael Chilufya Sata, the subsequent transition has been led by Dr. Guy Scott, in a dangerous and haphazard manner without due regard to the peace, security, unity and stability that this country is renowned for.
We have noted with deep concern that since Dr. Guy Scott assumed the office of Acting President, he has carried out his duties without regard to the law, to the principles of collective responsibility, and without consultation with his Cabinet colleagues as is expected in such a transition.

A majority of Zambias cabinet ministers have signed a statement urging acting President Guy Scott to resign, and calling for a meeting of ministers to discuss his replacement.
We urge Scott to immediately resign from his position as acting republican president on moral grounds, Harry Kalaba, foreign affairs minister, said as he read out a statement signed by 14 cabinet members.
The ministers said they have no confidence in Scotts leadership, casting further doubt on prospects for a smooth power transition after President Michael Sata died in October. A power struggle in the ruling Patriotic Front over who takes over from Sata culminated in Scott being removed as the partys vice president late yesterday.
As cabinet ministers, we have decided to express a clear vote of no confidence in his leadership and his ability to carry out the remaining duration of the transition, Kalaba said. There is need for cabinet to convene with due immediacy to discuss the replacement of Scott as acting president.
Scott took over from Sata, but isnt contesting the presidential elections next month. The PF has split into groups backing Justice and Defense minister Edgar Lungu as the partys leader and another preferring Miles Sampa, the deputy commerce minister. Sampa has challenged Lungus nomination, with the Supreme Court on Dec. 15 referring the case back to the Lusaka High Court, where a hearing is set for tomorrow.
Scott fired Lungu as PF secretary-general in November before reinstating him a day later after street protests broke out.

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. -
Gov. Rick Scott on Tuesday replaced longtime Florida Department of Law Enforcement Commissioner Gerald Bailey with the head of the Capitol Police.
No explanation was immediately given for the change by the governor's office or the FDLE.
The governor's office issued a release in which Scott announced the appointment of Rick Swearingen as the interim commissioner. The release briefly thanked Bailey for his service.
"He has been a terrific leader in our law enforcement community," Scott said of Bailey.
Bailey was appointed commissioner by former Gov. Jeb Bush and the state Cabinet on Dec. 5, 2006.
The change came as Scott revamps his leadership team in preparation for the Jan. 6 start of his second term. Also Tuesday, Scott appointed Chad Poppell, chief of staff for the state Department of Economic Opportunity, as the new secretary of the Florida Department of Management Services. Like with the FDLE change, the governor's office gave no explanation for Poppell's replacement of outgoing Secretary Craig Nichols.
Bailey, once a North Carolina State Highway Patrol trooper, served with the FDLE as deputy executive director, director of the Division of Criminal Investigation, inspector general, chief of crime laboratories and a special agent before taking the helm of the agency, which employs about 1,700 people with an annual budget topping $300 million.
Swearingen, who has been the director of the Capitol Police since June 2013, has been with the FDLE since 1984. He previously served as assistant special agent in charge and special agent supervisor.
"I look forward to working with Rick and the entire department as we continue to keep our crime rate at a 43-year low," Scott said in the release.
