Poinsettias, with their bright red leaves, signify auspicious energy and happiness, according to a feng shui expert
MANILA Christmas is a good time to attract prosperity into our homes, a feng shui practitioner said.
In a media event held Monday, Hanz Cua said some feng shui principles are applicable to holiday practices such as putting up Christmas trees and bright lights.
For one, he said trees generally symbolize abundance in feng shui, while the green color denotes wealth.
To attract more luck and abundance, Cua suggested putting up a Christmas tree that is at least higher than the tallest person in your home. The tree should be decorated as generously as possible with anything from Christmas balls to sparkly lights.
Cua discouraged placing faux gifts or beautifully wrapped boxes that are empty under the Christmas tree. He said hollow containers such as these symbolize zero abundance in feng shui and may counter the trees good luck.
To be on the safe side, only place real gifts that have something inside them, he said.
As for Christmas balls, Cua said it is best to use colors that represent the elements: fire (red, yellow, orange or pink), water (blue or purple), metal (gold or silver) and wood (green). Crystals and stones should also be added to represent the earth element and augment luck, he said.
Bright lights are also effective in attracting positive energy, said Cua. He encouraged hanging parols or Christmas lanterns on the windows or in front of the main door of the house.
Meanwhile, Cua said poinsettias, with their bright red leaves, signify auspicious energy and happiness.

Stuffed toys are only for childrens rooms, a feng shui expert says
MANILA Stuffed animals and other similar toys are usually associated with courtship, but these only lessen a persons chances of romantic success, according to a feng shui practitioner.
According to Hanz Cua, stuffed toys are only among the things that must be removed in a single persons bedroom if he or she wants to attract romance next year.
In a media event held Monday, he stressed that toys are only for childrens rooms, not adults who are looking for a relationship.
Other items that Cua said should not be in a single persons bedroom include art or images that show solitary people, mobiles or metal chimes, any kind of clutter and any item that carries water.
Cua went on to say that those who are looking for love can add enhancers in the northwestern section of their homes, which is the sector for romance in 2015. These enhancers include bright lights, a rose quartz crystal, a pair of romantic scented candles, or an image of two peony flowers which, he said, are considered the No. 1 flowers for romance in Chinese tradition.
He added that any item that is colored pink, red or brown can be considered an enhancer.
Meanwhile, Cua also warned that the northwest section of the home, which is also known as the sector of the father, might bring danger to married couples.
He said wives should make sure that their partners should avoid sleeping or staying in that part of the house as their tendency to stray will likely increase because of the feng shui energy.
Cua said couples who want to strengthen or improve their relationships should consider putting specific crystals or stones on the side table beside their bed. He said an amethyst crystal promotes fidelity, a carnelian fuels passion, while a large rock crystal or stone statue will help address conflicts.

If men were angels, no government would be necessary. If angels were to govern men, neither external nor internal controls on government would be necessary James Madison, 1788.
Civil asset forfeiture, or forfeiture of contraband as it is referred to in Chapter 59 of the Texas Code of Criminal Procedure, is the process by which the state may confiscate assets of an individual that are alleged to be proceeds or instruments of crime. Current law allows such property to be seized even if the property owner is never charged, much less convicted of a crime. If charges are brought, the seized property may still be disposed of prior to conviction, or in the case of acquittal, does not have to be returned to the owner.
It is a powerful tool in the hands of law enforcement developed and often used to attack drug dealers, cartels, and human trafficking rings. It also has increasingly become a significant source of government funds.
Like many government ideas gone awry, the thought behind civil asset forfeitures may have had a kernel of sense in it, when it was first conceived. It is right that the government requires a convicted criminal to make restitution, and such restitution should include ill-gotten gains. It may well be prudent too for civil authorities to freeze certain property clearly connected with criminal activity until sentencing has occurred.
However, the seizure of property, the fruit of someones life and liberty, in the name of justice, must be performed with care, humility, and due process, not like highway robbery.
Because of the propensity of government officials to overstep their bounds in doing their jobs, our Constitution requires: The right of the people to be
secure in their persons, houses, papers, and effects, against unreasonable searches and seizures, shall not be violated, and no Warrants shall issue, but upon probable cause, supported by Oath or affirmation, and particularly describing the place to be searched, and the persons or things to be seized.
It also stipulates that No person . . . shall be deprived of life, liberty, or property without due process of law; nor shall private property be taken for public use, without just compensation.
Even a cursory reading of those provisions would lead an individual to believe that seizure and forfeiture of assets should, at a minimum, require a warrant and due process.
But that isnt what always happens. One law enforcement agent told me he never uses the criminal forfeiture process, because the civil asset forfeiture process is much easier. You dont have to convict the owner of a crime.

Government and Fences
As I walked through New Calvary Cemetery outside Boston, I couldnt help but think about the young men who toiled in the trenches dug throughout Europes fields and forests a century ago. The whistle would sound, they would clamber over the top and make a mad dash across no mans land, getting caught up on barbed wire, slipping in the mud, as they were torn to pieces by artillery and machine-gun-fire or crippled by poison gas, with hand-to-hand combat being their reward if they made it across the field of battle.
After following a path to discover my family history in World War I, I ended up at the cemetery, pondering the indifference exhibited worldwide in regard to the war and the men who shed their blood in it. I was also searching for the unmarked grave of my great-grandfather, Pvt. Elmer Kenneth Gorham, a medic with the 101st Ambulance Company, 26th Yankee Division, Massachusetts Army National Guard.
Finding his final resting place amid the rows of headstones, obelisks and lawn level markers proved to be as difficult as locating his records in the U.S. government archives. The majority of Army personnel records from 1912 through 1959 were destroyed in a fire in 1973, according to researchers from the National Personnel Records Center, which holds one of the largest collections of federal records in the country, including military personnel records. Approximately 16 million to 18 million Army and Air Force files were lost.
As if that wasnt bad enough, the markers of these brave Americans have been swallowed by the earth in cemeteries across the nation. Roadside graves have been disturbed and desecrated across Europe by souvenir hunters and remains picked clean of identifying markers like dog tags, buttons and helmets. Sadly, many of those items wind up in makeshift home museums or auctioned on eBay.
It was a long hard road to find Pvt. Gorham.
According my family, Elmer Sr. had served in the Army during World War I, then in the Marine Corps. He fathered 10 children in the Boston suburbs, where he worked as a railroad electrician.
My grandfather, also named Elmer, was the oldest. He was 15 when his father died in 1939 of a cerebral hemorrhage at the age of 41.
Elmer Jr., now in his 90s, had served in the Marine Corps during World War II and later the Korean conflict. He had few memories of his father, who worked nights and slept during the day.
I wanted to know more about the man who raised the man who had played a large role in raising me. So I visited the NPRC website in November 2013 and filled out and mailed in the form to make my request.
By February 2014, I had his Marine Corps file from after World War I and a note telling me that his Army records had burned.

How I found the grave of Pvt. Elmer Kenneth Gorham, WWI medic
The ex-girlfriend of former AFL footballer Nick Stevens looked "flawless" one week after it's alleged he slammed her head into a tiled wall, a court has heard.
A woman who socialised with the pair over a few months said she saw Stevens' former partner about a week after one of the alleged assaults, in which Stevens is accused of grabbing her around the neck and slamming her head onto a bench and tiled wall.
The woman said she hadn't noticed any injuries on Stevens' "beautiful, absolutely stunning" then-partner, who wore immaculate makeup.
"I never noticed anything to think there was anything beneath it," the acquaintance told Ringwood Magistrates' Court.
"I've never recalled (her) looking anything less than flawless."
The acquaintance said the first time she met Stevens, his then-partner slapped him as he stood talking to a few women at a bar during a cricket gathering.
Stevens was also cross-examined on Monday about a number of text messages sent between him and his then-partner one day after the alleged assault.
The court heard a text message she sent him read "you can't compare how you hit me to how I hit you" in one part, and his response said "I'm sorry, I love you so much and will never touch you".
Stevens told the court he had never punched, kicked or hurt the woman as she had alleged.
The former Carlton and Port Adelaide player is contesting 30 charges of assaulting the woman while they were in a relationship during 2012 and 2013.
