A/NZ IT security provider inks Endian distribution deal

    - December 15, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Partnership allows company to target some of the strongest sectors of the A/NZ economy, as well as allow customers in the hospitality industry to address some of the IT security issues to hit the headlines recently.

Australia and New Zealand based IT security solutions Hemisphere Technologies has announced a new partnership with Endian, a global developer of enterprise and commercial Unified Threat Management (UTM) solutions.

Following the deal, Hemisphere Technologies says the partnership allows it to target some of the strongest sectors of the economy, as well as allow customers in the hospitality industry to address some of the IT security issues to hit the headlines recently.

Endians capabilities across specific vertical markets will allow it to translate its expertise in industrial network security solutions to target the mining and energy sectors, as well increase its foothold in the education services industry.

Were focused on expanding our portfolio of product offerings in a way which gives each of our vendors the space to roll out an effective local channel strategy," says Peter Phokos, managing director, Hemisphere Technologies.

"The cyber security stories coming out recently have left a mark on customers across 'non-traditional' sectors, and we're ready to offer them auxiliary IT consumables and products based on identifiable international standards, in addition to a core group of specialist technologies."

Meanwhile, Endians offering includes its integration of a new Endian Wi-Fi Hotspot feature with the recent Darkhotel APT targeting hotels across the APAC region allowing Endian to offer itself to the hotel and hospitality segments.

The offering allows organisations, such as hotels, to provide customers using their Wi-Fi hotspot service with safe access to the Internet via wireless or cable connection, as well as through any mobile device.

Nigel Hedges, Hemisphere Technologies general sales & technical manager, says that in examining todays firewall/UTM market from a technical product perspective, they were looking to offer the channel a "clear winner" that combined best-of-breed open source technology and heritage, with a sturdy commercial offering.

"What appealed to us about working with Endian technology is the ability to cover everything from a five-member organisation, through to multiple thousands of corporate employees," he adds.

A faithful restoration of a Manchester cathedral

    - December 15, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

MANCHESTER In 1969, it was time for a makeover of the interior of the Cathedral of St. Joseph in Manchester.

The liberalizing spirit of Vatican II was in the air, and then-Bishop Ernest J. Primeau decided that more than just church liturgy was going to change in his century-old cathedral building.

Out went the reredos, the elaborate, marble backdrop that featured heavenly directed spires and cubbyholes for statues of angels.

Paint brushes silenced intricate moldings and a starry night sky painted on the ceiling. The interior color scheme changed to tones of beige, light beige, and wooden pews.

    All that is now changing.

For the last three months, an interior restoration has been underway at the home church of the Diocese of Manchester.

A wooden reredos has been salvaged from a shuttered South Boston church and installed where the original had stood. Stations of the Cross from the same church now hang on the cathedral walls.

And painters have added an ocean-blue color to the ceiling, rich shades of rose and gold to moldings, and a faux-marble pattern to church columns.

This is a tremendous gift for us. These are priceless, these are works of art, said the Rev. Msgr. Anthony Frontiero, rector of the Cathedral.

Work has been going on at the Cathedral for about three months. On Mondays, about a half-dozen workers under the direction of Marko Golumbovic lay drop cloths, plug in power tools, turn on rock n roll radio and start their work.

Peter Pan creator's childhood home gets lottery cash boost

    - December 15, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

The Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) has announced funding worth 4.8million to different projects around the country.

Among the beneficiaries is a scheme to restore Moat Brae House in Dumfries, where Peter Pan creator JM Barrie played out pirate and castaway adventures in its 'Neverland' gardens.

In Barrie's words on the creation of his most famous story, his 'escapades in a certain Dumfries garden which is enchanted land to me, were certainly the genesis of that nefarious work'.

With the help of a 1.78million grant from HLF, an ambitious project will transform the house and its gardens into Scotland's first centre for children's literature and storytelling promoting creativity, imagination and play.

Actress Joanna Lumley, patron of the Peter Pan Moat Brae Trust, welcomed the funding boost, saying: "This grant will make a sensational difference to Moat Brae and the plans for the future of the Peter Pan Moat Brae Trust.

"It means that we can now move swiftly towards our goals of restoring the house and garden in readiness for its role in the literary life of children in Scotland.

"Our aims are to nurture the memories of past writers and to encourage the emergence of new young talent: to respect our extraordinary literary inheritance and to enable children's imaginations to fly, like Peter Pan. What a thrilling piece of good news. "

The funding will also pay for the restoration of Campbeltown Picture House, one of the first purpose-built cinemas in Scotland.

A grant of 1.1million has been earmarked to repair its Glasgow School Art Nouveau design and add new contemporary facilities, including a second auditorium and a new caf bar.

From its origins in the silent movie days in 1913 through to the modern day and digital technologies the Picture House has provided an invaluable service to Campbeltown and Kintyre cinemagoers.

Whether 90 or 98, report concludes Saudi King Abdullah is still calling the shots

    - December 15, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

    Special to WorldTribune.com

WASHINGTON Saudi King Abdullah, past 90 and ailing, still makes major decisions in the Gulf Cooperation Council kingdom, a report said.

The Washington Institute for Near East Policy said Abdullah remains the leading force in Saudi Arabia. In a report, the institute said Abdullah was responsible for the biggest shakeup in the Saudi government, the replacement of eight Cabinet ministers on Dec. 8.

The new appointments suggest the monarch is still an active decision-maker, the report, titled Saudi Cabinet Changes Suggest Domestic Discontent, said.

Author Simon Henderson, regarded as a leading U.S. analyst on Riyad, said the king appeared to be responding to rising criticism of Saudi domestic policy. The Health Ministry and Transportation Ministry have been examined by the Consultative Council, an advisory group to the king, who is also prime minister.

The reshuffle did not extend to senior ministers, including defense, foreign, energy and interior. Moreover, no member of the royal family was dismissed.

Henderson pointed to the dismissal of the Islamic affairs minister, normally reserved for the Al Sheik family. He said this marked the first time in decades that the powerful family would not be represented in the Cabinet.

Some of the Cabinet changes may also stem from allegations of corruption a persistent issue in Saudi Arabia, but one that the leadership never deals with openly. Last year, the kingdoms Grand Mufti stated that corrupt officials should not be exposed publicly, reflecting the Saudi preference for closing ranks when facing possible criticism.

Abdullah, whose age was said to be actually 98, has rarely ventured out of his palace. He did not attend the Dec. 9 Gulf Cooperation Council summit in Qatar nor has he taken his annual vacation in Morocco.

Zimbabwe: Minister Hints At Mugabe Retirement?

    - December 15, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

THE SHRILL panic with which Grace Mugabe, supported by Oppah Muchinguri, moved to force the removal and swift replacement of Joice Mujuru left most Zimbabweans wondering what might have spooked the country's First Lady into action.

Muchinguri offered to step down as head of the Zanu PF women's league so Grace could take over, and the First Lady used her subsequent nomination to stage whirlwind rallies across the country which she used to denounce Mujuru and prepare the ground for her ouster.

Mujuru has since been replaced by Emmerson Mnangagwa with Phelekezela Mphoko coming in as second vice president in a shake-up that saw several cabinet ministers whose loyalty President Robert Mugabe considered suspect being fired.

However, Muchinguri, perhaps inadvertently, or wittingly even, let slip the likelihood of even more significant changes to the country's leadership as the vice presidents and ministers took their oaths before Mugabe at State House last Friday.

Mugabe turns 91 in two months' time. He claims to be in fantastic physical shape for a man his age, but several "telling" gaffes at the Zanu PF congress were seen to suggest his advanced age is now taking its toll on a man who has led the country for 34 years.

But clearly addressing murmurs that the brutal government and Zanu PF purges were aimed at finally resolving - before stepping down - the succession question in a way that secures his family's physical and material security, Mugabe declared that he would remain in office as long as he was sane.

The party even agreed he would be its candidate for the 2018 general elections.

However, Friday's remarks by Muchinguri renewed speculation that the veteran leader has probably decided to retire.

Asked by journalists whether the removal of Mujuru and the appointment of an all-male "top three" at State and in the ruling party did not represent a huge setback for women's empowerment, Muchinguri said: "Something will soon be done to deal with that.

"I can't reveal it here, or discuss about it, but soon you will see something being done to solve that (the absence of women in the presidium)."
