Every year, along with the snow and the Christmas lights, comes a flood of warnings to protect your home from burglars looking to take advantage of all the houses left empty during holiday vacations. Call it the Home Alone effect.

But google something along the lines of holiday home break-ins and youll see a lot of tips written by insurance agencies or companies selling home security systems. Not surprisingly, some of those tips include Buy our security equipment, or Get our insurance.

So are holiday crime sprees just a myth cooked up by self-interested corporations and classic 90s films? Or do the numbers justify the fears?

Boston.com dove into the stats from the last few years, punching our calculators and tabulating the averages to bring you the answer, which is it kind of depends.

First, lets look at the data from Boston proper, which bears out the common wisdom to some extent.

The Boston Police Department breaks its crime data down by week, so we actually get to see how the trend changes within the month of December in 2012 and 2013.

The first half of December is pretty normal (i.e. the blue and green bars are about the same height as the purple bar, which represents the average of all 52 weeks of the year), but in both years those last two weeks where Christmas and New Years fall saw significantly more burglaries than the normal week.

Cementing four decades of diplomatic relations with a commitment to address regional security issues, the home ministry has made great strides forward in fostering strong collaborations with China.

To enhance the nations security, Malaysia will be working very closely with the Peoples Republic of China particularly on enforcement measures, home minister Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi stressed to Sunday Star.

The ministrys move is in line with what prime minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak had earlier described as the two countries joint vision to sustain the security that has allowed dynamic economic growth for both sides.

Speaking to Chinas newspaper, the Peoples Daily, during the 2014 Apec Economic Leaders Week in Beijing last month, the premier had referred to China as an important friend and partner - something Dr Ahmad Zahid, who led a delegation of senior officials on a six-day working visit to China recently, echoed. Dr Ahmad Zahid was in Beijing to meet with officials and the countrys State Councillor and Minister of Public Security Guo Shengkun.

He also visited security sites such as the Police Training Academy and the Ministry of Public Securitys research institution where research and development of technological security products are conducted.

Dr Ahmad Zahid also witnessed the signing of the minutes of the Second Malaysia-China Joint Working Group Meeting on Cooperation in Transnational Crime.

Being Human is closing its doors.

As Witwer hints to The Hollywood Reporter, "not everyone makes it out of this" in Monday's swan song. In a candid chat, the actor previews the series' final episode, reveals his favorite episodes and tells what he'll miss most.

When did you know this was the final season of Being Human?

We knew about a year ago. We were in a position where some weird things were happening with the finance and what it all amounted to was our budget going down and basically the decision was, sure, we could make a season five but it might not be any good. We all talked and decided that the best thing to do was to end it with season four and so we went to Syfy to make that request. First they said "sure" to an ending and they weren't committing to it, but thankfully they honored the ending we created because the whole season was designed to be a swan song for all these characters.

It's somewhat of a rarity for television shows to end on that note.

It's extraordinarily rare, and to be honest, I'm super surprised that it all worked out because you never get that opportunity to end things on your own terms, to have something you feel happy with as a story from beginning to end. I really respect Syfy for honoring that.
