Who really likes to care for their lawn, honestly? Unless you are one of those rare individuals who takes pride in silly things like public appearance and accomplishing tasks, getting out the lawn mower and weed eater to get your yard in tiptop shape is not high on the list of priorities. And, I mean, sweating, really? That's for the birds.
Thankfully, if you are in California or Texas (some restrictions apply, continue down to the interview for exact locations) Lawn Love can take care of those tasks for you. They are bringing tech into what is typically a low tech field. We had the chance to talk with Jeremy Yamaguchi, founder of Lawn Love, to ask him a few questions about his lawn care services. For those that don't know, what is Lawn Love?
Lawn Love is an on-demand lawn care marketplace. We make it incredibly easy to find, book and pay for a great lawn service. We've been called the "Uber for lawn care", but I'm not sure that's the best comparison. Like Uber, we're bringing a tech platform to a traditionally low-tech space, which allows us to provide customers with a much betterexperiencethan the current alternatives. Unlike Uber, we're actually pretty nice people and keep the baby-eating to a minimum.
In what locations do you provide lawn care?
We're currently live in seven major markets across California and Texas. We initially launched in San Diego and have since expanded to Los Angeles, Orange County, San Jose, Austin, Dallas, and San Antonio. We have plans to be in another 10-15 major metro areas in 2015.
What services do you provide your customers?
The majority of our customers use Lawn Love for regular maintenance. This includes things like mowing, edging, trimming, and general yard care. We also offer a number ofspecialtyserviceslike lawn aeration, seeding, fertilization, etc. Our lawn techs are highly experienced, and can take care of just about anything that grows outside your home.
What is a "Lawn Care Technician"?
Our lawn technicians are independent service professionals.We have a pretty rigorous section process, and we screen, background check, and I-9 verify each of our service providers before bringing them on board. They averageten years of experience caring for yards of all shapes and sizes,and are familiar with the grasses, pests, and seasonal challenges that are specific to each region. They are highly capable folks, and will work wonders on your yard.

Items of Note Associate Professor David Watts Named Interim Department Chair
Associate Professor David J. Watts has been named Landscape Architecture department Interim Chair for the 2014-15 academic year. "David's wealth of academic and professional experience will benefit our students. I look forward to working with him as a member of the college's administrative leadership team," said Christine Theodoropoulos, CAED dean. "I would also like to extend my great appreciation to Joseph Ragsdale for his excellent work as department head and for the many contributions he has made to the mission of the college." Ragsdale rejoins the faculty, teaching during Fall term and then going on sabbatical for the balance of the academic year.
Watts came to Cal Poly in 2007, teaching a variety of classes including the senior capstone series, design theory, and implementation strategies. He also served as one of the universitys first service learning fellows and received the Presidents Community Service Award in 2014.
His area of research is childrens play environments, their impact on child development, and their role in reconnecting children to nature.His interest in social justice and accessibility within the landscape has influenced his professional practice and teaching. As part of a service learning class, Watts led a class to South Africa, where the students designed and constructed playgrounds and vegetablegardens for underprivileged children. The students also worked at AIDS orphanages in urban townships and rural public schools.
Watts earned bachelors and masters degrees from the University of Wisconsin-Madison and is a registered landscape architect and member of the American Society of Landscape Architects (ASLA).
Landscape architecture professor emeritus and former CAED associate dean K. Richard Zweifel has been elected president of the American Society of Landscape Architects. Zweifel was sworn in as president at the 2014 annual meeting in Denver, becoming the 70th president since ASLA's founding in 1899. Zweifel was also named one of the 30 most admired educators in architecture and design programs by the 2014 DesignIntelligence survey. He was cited in the survey for "his consistency and vision [which] have kept Cal Poly SLO among the best education programs in multidisciplinary design professions." Zweifel also received the 2014 Council of Educators in Landscape Architecture (CELA) Presidents Award for his work in advancing a strong and mutually supportive relationship between CELA and ASLA.

After seeing plans for a new riverfront promenade in Burlington City, several people at a special meeting Thursday night pressed the landscape architect for an answer to one question.
"Can you give us a date when this will be done?" Jeri Waters asked. "You've been working on it for a while."
Waters and others said the plans looked exciting, but they wondered if it would be years, maybe decades, before the grassy 14-acre space along the Delaware River is beautified.
Richard Newton, a partner with the Philadelphia-based Olin Studios, told the 100 people at the meeting in City Hall that the availability of funding would set the timetable. "I don't want to make any promises," he said.
City Council President David Babula said some of the financing might come from the anticipated $1.8 million sale of city property near the river to a developer who is planning to build market-rate apartments. He said that project, known as Pearl Pointe, could bring the city $250,000 to $350,000 a year in new tax revenue.
The promenade is estimated to cost between $2.5 million and $5 million, based on the final plan, he said. The council is expected to vote on it next month.
Resident Jon Harpool commented that it was a "very nice plan" but wondered whether eliminating the overlook would save money. He said state funding for the project might be difficult to obtain and could take from five to 15 years.
Newton said that the overlook would be a special place. "It's where you would go to propose and where you go to meet someone," he said.
During his presentation, Newton described the new promenade as a "more interesting and more romantic" place than the grassy promenade and sidewalk now there. That space was created about 25 years ago and is used mostly by joggers, boaters, and anglers. Sometimes small concerts and holiday events are held.

Planning your garden? Don't forget to plan for your hardscape as well. Hardscape is the inorganic part of the garden or yard, such as walkways and pergolas. Put a strong emphasis on "part of the garden"; any hardscaping should be carefully planned to integrate with your plantings and your house. Create a flow by combining two or more hardscape features to turn your yard into a truly magical place. Imagine strolling a rustic cobblestone path that leads to the surprise of a charming pergola ... or emerging from your backyard swimming pool just in time to grill supper on the adjacent patio.
Design
Traditionally, hardscape has meant non-living outdoor decor made of masonry and wood. However, these days that definition is expanding. Your home's hardscaping elements might also be concrete, tile, brick, or cobblestone. You can let your imagination go when it comes to the materials you select. Just make sure that your choices blend harmoniously with the landscape, your house, and each other. Keep them in scale -- don't overwhelm a tiny yard with an enormous piece of statuary, for example. Use soft curves as well as straight lines and angles, and vary heights. Two or three coordinating colors and textures in your hardscape will be more appealing than a single one. Include plenty of vegetation for both a natural look and a cooling effect.
Purpose
Deciding on your goals is an integral step in any well-crafted plan. What purpose(s) do you have in mind for your hardscaping? Perhaps you want to protect your lush green grass from wear and tear or provide easy access to a vegetable garden. An attractive footpath, based on typical foot traffic patterns, is the obvious solution. If you'd like to cut down on lawn care and watering, a patio will be just what you need. Don't forget to plan for a safe play area if you have kids or grandkids. In a mild climate where you are able to enjoy your yard for a large part of the year, an outdoor living room may be a dream come true.
Precautions
Before getting started on a hardscaping project, make sure you get the necessary approval. Many jobs will require a permit, as well as permission from your HOA (if applicable). You may need to consult with an architect or an engineer -- for instance, if you'd like to put up a retaining wall or change the grade of your land. Plan for adequate drainage of sizable areas like pool surrounds, and make sure that you'll be building properly prepared bases. In addition, consider your property's patterns of sun and shade so that you can take the best advantage. Finally, decide whether you are ready to tackle the project yourself, possibly with the help of one of the DIY kits on the market, or whether you'd prefer to opt for a professional hardscape install.
Choices
Keeping all of this information in mind, now you're ready for some fun ... choosing the features to include in your hardscape project. A decorative path is quite likely the first idea that springs to mind. How about using the same material to upgrade your driveway -- especially if it is highly visible by visitors to your home? Next, you'll probably need a place to sit. Build some benches, or incorporate them into a handsome stone wall, whether structural or ornamental. While you're at it, you will want a table or two, plus a fire pit or fireplace for barbecues or warming up on chilly evenings. In fact, if you have the space, why not go for an entire outdoor kitchen? Add to the beauty of your yard with planters to be filled with flowers, or install an attractive trellis or rock garden. Fun and functional hardscape elements comprise water features, arbors, swings, birdbaths, and sundials.

It was a fun and energetic night at UMass Lowell's University Crossing as HGTV star and Boston interior designer Taniya Nayak took the stage.
The audience was quick to its feet as Executive Chancellor Jacqueline Maloney introduced Nayak and joined in her entrance dance, a fantastic way to break the ice.
Nayak is no unfamiliar face to the campus. A 1997 alumna of the college, she earned her bachelor's degree in business marketing and went on to receive her master's degree in interior design from Boston Architectural College.
But she is best known as the host of HGTV's "House Hunters on Vacation," "Freestyle," "Design to Sell" and "Restaurant Impossible." Most recently she has appeared on "Oprah," the "Rachael Ray Show" and the "Ellen DeGeneres Show."
During the talk, the proceeds of which went to help raise scholarship funds, Nayak offered DIY holiday decorating tips. Some of Nayak's creative and quick decorating tips were money-saving last-minute ideas that anyone could pull off.
Some of Nayak's suggestions:
Christmas wrapping: Transform an armless chair such as a parsons dining chair by slipping pillowcases over the back of the chair. Wrap a contrasting fabric piece around the pillow case and tie off.
The take-away: Personalize a glass ornament by adding a sticker to it and writing in your dinner guest's name. Put it in a decorative box or bowl and use it as a place card which they can then take away as a personal gift.
Color advice: Stick to the strip! For the indecisive, when it comes to choosing paint color, find a color you love, and use the whole paint spectrum strip for the rest of the home. For example, go three shades up from the color you love in the kitchen for a more dramatic look in a dining room. The whole house will look like you worked with a designer if you stick to the paint sample strip.
