When New Yorkers concern themselves with rodents, they typically focus on how to kill them. But a new law proposed in Albany this month aims to protect them from a long-used extermination method now increasingly seen as unduly cruel, even to a rat: trapping them with glue until they starve, die of dehydration or are dispatched by hand.

The bill would ban the sale and use of what are known as glue boards cheap, sticky traps that can be strewed around construction sites or tossed under kitchen cabinets and forgotten. If the legislation is successful, New York would join a growing list of places that passed bans recently, like Scotland and Ojai, a city in California with a population of about 7,500, which made glue traps illegal this month. In January, Representative Ted W. Lieu, a Democrat who represents Los Angeles, introduced the Glue Trap Prohibition Act in the U.S. House of Representatives.

Those pushing for the ban cite the traps gruesome method, the fact that other small animals like songbirds and kittens can become ensnared, and the risk of stuck rodents spreading disease.

If you want an animal dead, there are lots of ways to do it, and torturing an animal to death isnt the answer, said Assemblyman Harvey Epstein, a Democrat who represents Manhattans East Side and who sponsored the bill in the State Assembly. We dont need to lose our humanity just because we dont like having as many rodents in our midst as we currently do.

But the bills detractors, including those who work in the pest-control industry and New Yorkers who have had one too many of the creatures scuttle past their ankles, say its misguided sympathy. A glue-trap ban doesnt stop rats and mice from meeting other brutal ends from poison bait or spring-loaded snap traps.

A lot of people who dont actually have to face rats, mice, all these types of disgusting creatures, have a lot of opinions about them, said Sam Liebowitz, who works at National Pest and Exterminators Supplies, a Brooklyn-based company that sells a variety of rodent-control methods, including poisons that work by causing the animal to bleed to death internally. Glue boards arent fun, but there are so many things that are more cruel.

ALPENA An Alpena family is grateful beyond words to be selected as the winner of a new roof for their house from Level Up Roofing in Alpena.

Straight tears was the reaction Jessica Wilding said she had when she received the call from Level Up telling her she and her family had been selected to have a brand-new roof installed at no cost to them.

Level Up selected the family after the company received a host of nominations during a promotion they announced on Facebook.

Many, many tears, Jessica Wilding said. Its hard to put into words. I was extremely excited.

Upon receiving the news, she called her husband, Justin Wilding, who could barely understand her because she was so overwhelmed with emotion.

I called my husband at work, sobbing, she continued. He had to hold the phone away from his ear because he couldnt quite understand what I was saying. I just feel extremely fortunate.

I had to tell her to calm down so I could understand what she was saying, Justin Wilding said. It took me quite a while to come to the realization that wed actually won. I was in shock for most of the day.

The Wildings live on 5th Avenue in Alpena with son Logan Corwin and 5-year-old daughter Harleigh.

It means the world, Jessica Wilding said.

Its a huge burden off our shoulders, Justin Wilding added.

The Wildings said they cannot say enough about the generosity of Level Up.

Theyre beyond amazing, Jessica Wilding said. Were beyond blessed that we were chosen.

The roof replacement is valued at an estimated $8,800.

The family had been getting by, patching the roof when they had the funds, but their roof is long overdue for full replacement, the Wildings said.

I actually worked for a local hospital for 10 years, Jessica Wilding explained. Our daughter was diagnosed non-verbal autistic, so I had to quit my job to stay home with her, and things have just been extremely tight and hard since then.

I work, and we struggle with vehicle repairs and everyday problems, and other little repairs on the house, and the roof has just been something that we just havent had the money for, Justin Wilding noted.

Again, this has just been the biggest blessing that weve ever received, Jessica Wilding said. Things like this just dont happen to people like us.

Level Up owner Michael Tadajewski explained why the company held the promotion.

Basically, weve had a really great customer base over the last year and a half, so we just wanted to do something to give back to the community, he said. We had a decent amount of applicants, and it was a hard decision, but I think we found the right family to give it to.

During our most recent trip to Disneys BoardWalk, we saw crew members adding steel roofing to the dormers on The Cake Bake Shop by Gwendolyn Rogers. The new table-service restaurant and quick-service bakery is set to open sometime this year.

Two crew members were on the first roof of The Cake Bake Shop.

Some of the windows on the side of the building were open. The window frames and panes of glass were installed recently.

A series of metal beams now covers each dormer roof on this side of the building. There are also new poles on the corners of the tower.

The dormers also have small windows on them.

Additional steel has been added behind the entrances marquee framework.

More weather-proof purple sheathing has been added around the bakery entrance to the right.

Theres still an uncovered metal framework on the front of the building that will be the bakerys marquee.

The Cake Bake Shop recently began hiring for several positions, with open interviews this week. They put out a call for culinary leaders late last year. The website alsolists some positions with open applications.

Representatives from global roofing manufacturer IKO Industries Ltd., Clay Countys Economic Development Corporation and the Clay County Board of County Commissioners broke ground March 27 on Clay Hill, a $270 million, 300,000-square-foot plant to make residential roofing products.

The manufacturing facility is on 80 acres east of U.S. 301, at County Road 218, about 10 miles south of Interstate 10.

IKO said it will create about 100 jobs and is hiring. The company said it will begin operating in mid-2025.

The first of three production lines will manufacture shingles.

IKO Corporate Communications Manager Derek Fee said the project will have an estimated economic impact of about $1.3 billion on Clay County.

Its the first time weve built down here, Fee said. It will support a growth market for us.

IKO, founded in 1954, is headquartered in Brampton, Ontario, Canada. Most of its U.S. facilities operate in the Northeast, but it has operations in Texas and Alabama.

Clay Hill is the eighth shingle production line in IKOs North American manufacturing operations.

IKO paid $5.26 million in April 2023 for the 80 acres of timberland.

County commissioners approved incentives and a mobility fee exemption for the project in May 2023, which at the time was code-named Project Gator.

The impact in Clay County is huge, said Chereese Stewart, assistant county manager for the county commissioners.

Clay Hill Plant Manager Daniel Lindhahl relocated from Illinois for the job, but is from Clay County and attended Orange Park High School. He has worked for IKO for about 15 years.

We appreciate all of the support thats been given and provided for this project, Lindhahl said. Were looking forward to building a successful operation with the state of our equipment and putting together the best team of people in the area.

Weve already started recruiting and building that team. Were looking forward to building long-lasting relationships in the surrounding areas and well strive to be a great neighbor.

He called his role a dream. He has been at IKO for about 15 years.

I was made aware of this opportunity a couple of years back and its funny how things come full circle, Lindhahl said. Im glad to be back.

Construction continues at the Clay Hill IKO Industries Ltd. facility east of U.S. 301, at County Road 218, about 10 miles south of Interstate 10.
