A PLUMBER has suffered severe burns following a gas explosion at a Mornington Peninsula school this afternoon.

The man in his 50s received flash burns to his face, arms and legs when the incident happened while he was working at Red Hill Consolidated School.

It is understood the victim, who was engaged by the school, was working on the hot water service and purging gas lines when the system ignited.

Paramedics, fire crews and police were called to the Arthurs Seat Rd school about 5pm.

Ambulance Victoria spokeswoman Lisa Hind said the plumber was flown to The Alfred hospital in a serious condition.

Principal Leanne Marshall said the school communitys thoughts were with the injured man.

She said while some students in after-school care were playing on the oval, the majority of staff and students had left for the day.

Students didnt witness the incident but some are understandably shaken. Weve arranged for specialist counselling support to be available at our school from tomorrow for any student who may need it, Ms Marshall said.

She said the building in which the explosion occurred was deemed safe and has since been cordoned off.

Foxes fair game after pest declaration

    - December 8, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

    Dec. 7, 2014, 5:18 p.m.

Dozens of people across the state keep tame foxes as pets - and are fearing a new "kill-all policy".

Dozens of people across the state own tame foxes that are considered as much a part of the family as any cat or dog.

Foxes are to be officially declared a pest species across NSW.

Fairfax Mediacan reveal a Local Land Services (European Red Fox) Pest Control Order 2014 will be gazetted by theNSW government in the next fortnight.

The decision follows a draft order released for public feedback in October, which attracted almost 1800 submissions the majority of which were in favour of the law being passed.

The order bringsNSWinto line with all other states and paves the way for the "co-ordinated control" of a feral species estimated to cost Australia's environment and economy more than $227 million annually. However, the law also signals the death knell for a registered charity called Sydney Fox Rescue which, for three years, has saved injured and orphaned fox cubs and, through various socialisation programs, successfully adopted them out as pets.

Dozens of people across the state own tame foxes that are considered as much a part of the family as any cat or dog. But those owners must now apply for a permit from Local Land Services to keep their animals. It will now be illegal to keep any new foxes in captivity. And by law, any fox cub that is found abandoned or injured in the future must be euthanised.

In a statement to be released on Monday, Minister for Primary IndustriesKatrinaHodgkinsondescribes the order as a move that will benefit "landowners and the wider community", adding: "Foxes are not companion animals this pest control order sends the clear message that they are pests, not pets."

Sydney Fox Rescue confirmed on Saturday that it lodged a proposal during the draft consultation phase for the inclusion of a "permit system" that would allow it to continue its work, and for people to continue keeping foxes privately.

Foxes declared pests not pets in NSW

    - December 8, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

A pest control order for foxes has been introduced in NSW, forcing pet owners to obtain a permit.

Cover your ears Fantastic Mr Fox - because foxes have been declared pests in NSW.

A pest control order for foxes has been introduced for the first time in the state, forcing pet owners to obtain a permit.

Local Land Services will co-ordinate a control scheme, allowing private land holders to bait or shoot the furry animals in localised campaigns.

Primary Industries minister Katrina Hodgkinson says the order means no new foxes can be acquired.

"Foxes are not companion animals. This pest control order sends the clear message that they are pests, not pets," she said in a statement.

Foxes cost the Australian environment and economy around $227.5 million, primarily because of the damage they cause for livestock producers, she said.

Extra vigilance for outdoor fires required

Extra vigilance for outdoor fires required

A restricted fire season for rural areas in the Auckland region will be implemented from 15 December. Lighting an outdoor fire on rural land is still possible but a permit is required for fires in the open air.

A total fire ban is now in place for all Hauraki Gulf Islands.

With summer on its way the days are growing longer and warmer which means fire risk increases. All outdoor fires need to be carefully managed to prevent the spread of fire.

Conditions are very windy for this time of year and last week there were a number of fire incidents around the region due to controlled burns getting out of control, says Auckland Council Principal Rural Fire Officer Bryan Cartelle.

Council will be issuing fire permits in Aucklands rural zones which include farms, forestry areas and large blocks of land. Permits are free of charge.

Auckland Council is introducing an Outdoor Fire Safety Bylaw to manage the risk of all outdoor fires in both rural and urban areas. The bylaw will continue with seasonal restrictions but also gives guidance on the types of fire and fuel allowed with an aim to protect people, property and the environment from the risk of fire. The bylaw is due to come into effect on 20 December.

For information on fire safety and tips for the safe lighting of open air fires call Auckland Council on 09 301 0101 or visit aucklandcouncil/ruralfire.govt.nz

Anyone who sees a suspicious fire should call the fire service immediately on 111.

    Ends
