Work is underway at the Miller County Courthouse to get rid of the mold in the building.

The mold has caused some of the county offices to move and Thursday, crews were working on the air duct system in the basement of the building. County Judge Larry Burgess said that damage from the faulty air condition system was not as bad as first believed. Burgess said they still hope to have the remediation work completed by the first of the year.

"They didn't find anything significant so it's going to be less expensive instead of replacing some stuff we are going to have it clean" says Judge Burgess.

Burgess said the situation is not causing any health problems for employees and those conducting business at the courthouse.

MACOMB TOWNSHIP(WWJ) An alert neighbor is credited for stopping two young thieves who were stealing packages dropped off by UPS drivers at homes in Macomb County on Thursday.

Macomb County Sheriff deputies arrested the 18 and 19-year-old suspects after a homeowner in Macomb Township spotted one suspect as he ranup to a porch and take a package in a neighborhood near 21 Mile and Hayes.

As the thief was retreating to the passenger seat of the Nissan, the homeowner used his cell phone to take photographs of the manandthen called police.

As police were responding to thecall, a second incident was reported. The suspects were stopped a short time later and 26 packages were found in their car.

Other deputies found packaging and shipping labels nearby. The suspects are facing larceny charges.

COTTONWOOD HEIGHTS Police say the arrests of two men suspected of stealing packages off front porches is a good reminder for residents not to let burglars ruin their holiday season.

On Thursday, Cottonwood Heights police arrested two men believed to have taken packages from homes in their city and West Jordan over the past two weeks.

"The suspects were following UPS delivery vans and were walking up to residences taking packages after they were dropped off," said Cottonwood Heights Police Sgt. Corbett Ford.

Sometime between Nov. 27 and Nov. 30, Ford says packages left on a porch in Cottonwood Heights were taken. But surveillance video recorded by the victims proved to be "extremely beneficial," he said.

Investigators got a general description of the men and their vehicle. About 3 p.m. Thursday, an officer spotted a vehicle that matched the description near Ft. Union Boulevard and 1300 East and pulled it over.

The driver, Douglas Dru Kemp, 37, of West Jordan, was ultimately arrested for investigation of drug possession. Police also found a package in the vehicle that had recently been taken off a porch in West Jordan, Ford said.

"The driver also had a knife. And he also had a black airsoft handgun in the storage compartment that had the orange tip either removed or painted over. They were taking steps to make sure you didn't know if it's a real gun or a fake gun," he said.

Arrests remind residents not to let grinches steal Christmas

COTTONWOOD HEIGHTS, Utah The holiday season brings packages aplenty to porches, and police said they recently nabbed a couple of Grinches accused of stealing Christmas deliveries from residents.

Police initially received surveillance images from a resident who had a package delivered by UPS stolen from their property, and the footage depicted a man and a dark-colored Toyota Scion.

Sgt. Corbett Ford, a public information officer for Cottonwood Heights Police Department, said they put out an internal bulletin, and Thursday a detective spotted a vehicle matching that description. After following the vehicle, the detective made a traffic stop on the Scion.

He subsequently arrested the driver for possession of methamphetamine, possession of stolen property, Ford said. This guy actually had a package that had just been stolen from a delivery in the West Jordan area, so he actually was still out capering and up to nefarious activities.

The man, identified by police as 37-year-old Douglas Drew Kemp, also had a knife and an Airsoft BB gun. The guns fire plastic BBs and are designed to appear like real firearms, and Corbett said the bright orange tip required on such BB guns to mark them as toys had either been removed or painted over on the gun in the mans possession.

They are roaming around in the valley, they are stealing items from people, and then, to top that off, they have items made to look like weapons in the event that somebody tries to confront them, Ford said.

A second man, 34-year-old Adam Pat Anderson, was arrested at a residence in Murray, and Ford said that man was an accomplice in the thefts.

Well, I think you could probably definitely say that this is kind of one of those Grinches that stole Christmas, but unfortunately you have people that are up to no good, Ford said. They are doing nefarious acts. They are stealing things from people, so in that sense, yes, they are [Grinches]. Absolutely.

This time of the year is often the busiest for delivery services, and Ford said with more and more people shopping online and opting for delivery, package thefts are not uncommon around the holidays. He said there are several things people can do to protect their packages.

Kemp was arrested for possession of methamphetamine, possession of stolen property and possession of a dangerous weapon (knife.) Anderson was arrested on a felony theft charge.
