OKLAHOMA COUNTY, Oklahoma -
Christmas is three weeks from today, and for some kids in Oklahoma, there won't be any presents under the tree this year. But one organization is trying to change that.
Youth Services for Oklahoma County hosted its annual Christmas party for homeless teens. It's all part of their SKIL program, or supporting kids in independent living.
Gabrel and Paula are two teenagers out there on their own. They told News 9 they sometimes bounce around from couch to couch, but both have big dreams.
Paula wants to join the National Guard and become a registered nurse. Her favorite present? A book to help her study.
Gabrel has worked as a handyman since he was 12, and for the first time, he now has his own set of tools.
But even with the great presents, which both teenagers say are more necessity than want, they get something even more out of the SKIL program.
The YSOC is always asking for donations.
Learn more about how you can help.

Six months after the Bharatiya Janata Partys sole poster boy Narendra Modi comprehensively won the April-May general elections and pulped the entire opposition to become the Indian prime minister, the opposition parties are now slowly getting back their lost voices. The opposition misery had been accentuated further in the recently concluded assembly polls in two states Maharashtra and Haryana and both the states witnessed installation of BJP governments for the first time in history. After the ongoing five-phase poll process in the states of Jammu and Kashmir and Jharkhand, which will be concluded with announcement of results on Dec. 23, the political battlefield will shift to Delhi for the 70-seat assembly. Incidentally, BJPs main rivals in Delhi elections, Congress and Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) have been successful in hogging medias attention after a long time. The Modi governments performance and various acts of omission and commission by BJP leaders are mainly responsible for a small but noticeable revival in political fortunes of Congress and AAP. But whether these two parties will be able to stop the BJPs juggernaut will be known only when the Delhi elections are held in February or March next year. Two specific instances in the past few days demonstrate how the BJP ceded political space to the opposition. In the first instance, the Congress party came up with a booklet lampooning the BJP government for 25 U-turns or policy reversals in past six months since the Modi government came to power one policy reversal per week on an average. Six months down the lane, the Modi model of governance stands out for three shameful characteristics U-Turn on promises, mere renaming and plagiarizing of UPA (United Progressive Alliance) programs and schemes and decisions that involve selling out public/national interests for the benefit of friendly industrial and corporate houses, says the Congress booklet titled Chhe maheene paar, U-Turn Sarkaar (Six months later, a U-Turn government). This is a brutal frontal assault by the Congress on the Modi government as it effectively says that PM Modi has no vision; that he is a mere talking wonder, a copycat and worse, a plagiarist. The Congress party got a lot of attention in print, electronic and digital media because of this major well-prepared political onslaught on the BJP government. The second instance pertains to the gutter-level politics that several ministers of PM Modi indulged in while addressing election rallies in Delhi. Minister of State for Food Processing Industries Sadhvi Niranjan Jyoti kicked off a controversy on Dec. 1 by claiming that everyone including Muslims and Christians are sons of Ram. Jyoti, a newly-inducted minister and BJP MP from Fatehpur in Uttar Pradesh, said while launching the BJP election campaign in Delhi that the voters must choose between Ramzadon (those born of Ram) and haramzadon (illegitimately born). Here is the English translation of Jyotis remarks made in Hindi: Modi has given a mantra that we will neither take bribe nor let others take bribe. Now you have to decide whom to choose. Will you choose the sons of Ram or those who are illegitimate?" Jyotis remarks triggered immediate condemnation from opposition parties. Congress leader Randeep Surjewala said, We condemn the use of words by Sadhvi Niranjan Jyoti. The BJP is practicing politics of division. The prime minister should answer this as she belongs to his Cabinet. Biju Janata Dal leader Jay Panda castigated Sadhvi Jyoti while Nationalist Congress Partys Majid Memon said, It does not matter what a persons religion is. Hours later the minister was forced to offer an unconditional apology in both houses of parliament. But what is even more galling is the fact that Modi did not snub his foul-mouthed minister and chose to remain silent on the controversy. However, Modi issued a warning to BJP leaders at a meeting of the BJP Parliamentary Board meeting in New Delhi on Dec. 2 and told them not to address the nation out of turn, adding that I will not compromise on this. Giriraj Singh, another BJP leader who was recently inducted into Modis Cabinet despite his controversial remark during the general elections campaign that all those oppose Modi should better go to Pakistan, has stoked another controversy. His speech at an election rally in Delhi was couched in references to Hindu mythology wherein he targeted AAP leader Arvind Kejriwal as a fake Hanuman. Singh said: Do you know Hanuman? We are all Hanuman. Hanuman told Ram that he has no identity of his own. We are all followers of Modi in this country. People wanted to know the reason for my victory in Lok Sabha. I told them it is only Narendra Modi. Singh also compared Kejriwal to Maarch, a demon in the Hindu epic Ramayana who had the ability to disguise himself. Kejriwal is that fake Hanuman, he is the demon Maarich who changes shape but will get caught one day, Singh said. In this case, the language is not abusive but what the opposition parties are objecting to is Singhs attempts to polarize voters with subtle usage of religious similes and comparisons. Haroon Yusuf, Delhis Congress leader and a former minister in Delhi government, voiced his worries on this count thus: This is what the BJP has been doing in Delhi for the past few months. They have been trying to polarize Delhi on the basis of religion; this is what they did in Trilokpuri and Bawana. This politics of religious polarization is very dangerous and spreads hatred. But Delhi wont accept this. Indian general elections 2014 witnessed politicians across the political spectrum stooping low and hitting their rivals below the belt. These elections also witnessed the BJP successfully polarizing the electorate. This trend has continued and almost become a norm. It is for the Indian voters to decide whether they would allow politicians to indulge in this kind of gutter-level politics. All political parties in India are responsible for the plummeting standards of election campaigning.

WODONGA racetrack is set to cash in on a major event and, at the same time, have a major makeover.
WODONGA racetrack is set to cash in on a major event and, at the same time, have a major makeover.
The Ulysses Motorcycle Club is expected to attract up to 6000 members at its annual general meeting at the course in March.
The track will be closed to horses for more than a fortnight with trainers having to float gallopers to Albury for work.
The closure will also be a window of opportunity for the club to widen the track, correct the camber near the outside rail and improve the surface.
The Wodonga and District Turf Club general manager, Tom OConnor, said the first stage of the work would start next month.
That will involve widening the home straight, he said.
The track itself is 20 metres wide for most of the course but the home straight narrows to 14metres.
In January, we will start seeding grass up to four metres inside the running rail.

Grassing will get underway this month at Bluejack National. The club, located in Montgomery just outside of Houston, will feature the first Tiger Woods-designed golf course scheduled to open in the United States.
All surfaces of the 18-hole layout will be planted with two varieties of zoysiagrass - Zeon Zoysia and L1F Zoysia - developed by Bladerunner Farms of Poteet, Texas. The only exception will be the greens, which will be TifEagle bermudagrass.
Bluejack National's director of agronomy, Eric Bauer, says the fairways are being sodded with Zeon Zoysia. The course will have no rough, Bauer says, because "the designer and the developer want golf to be more enjoyable and to increase the pace of play.
"We're blanketing the entire fairway playing area with Zeon Zoysia. Tee tops and green surrounds are L1F Zoysia, a new variety that can tolerate lower mowing heights. It will allow us to take the height down shorter. This is based on the desires of the Tiger Woods design team to create a lot of different shot options."
Bauer adds, "We are sodding a total of 97 acres," with the intention of having the course grown-in and ready for play by the fall of 2015.
The developer, Beacon Land Development, decided to sod the zoysiagrass, Bauer says, rather than sprig it because "we were tied to a residential component. It was more important to open next year, which sodding allows, rather than sprig and wait another year to open."
Zoysiagrass varieties are known to require less water and fertilizer than bermudagrass, a family of warm-season grasses widely used on golf courses. Along with zoysiagrasses' lower input demands, another deciding factor in the selection of Zeon Zoysia and L1F Zoysia at Bluejack National was, according to Bauer, "shade tolerance. We kept a lot of significant trees. The course is severely wooded."
Medalist Golf is building the golf course. The turf used to grass the golf course was grown by All Seasons Turf Grass in Brookshire, Texas. Scott Sipes, sales manager for All Seasons Turf Grass, says the sodding process will require 520 truckloads of grass equaling 4.2 million square feet of sod in the form of big rolls and slabs.
All Seasons Turf Grass has been in business for more than 35 years. The family-owned sod producer is one of the largest in the state of Texas, producing certified sod on a sand-based profile, the preferred growing medium for the golf industry.
Even though the company has such a long history, Sipes says he recognizes the significance of growing the grass for the first American course designed by Tiger Woods.

Teff seen as potential annual hay option
December 3, 2014 - Livestock producers looking for an annual hay crop would do well to consider Teff, a warm season annual thats native to North Africa and often grown as a cereal crop. Michigan State University extension specialist Jerry Lindquist says Teff grass grows in frost-free environments and prefers temperatures from 60 to 85 degrees Fahrenheit. It is also moisture and drought tolerant. Teff regrows rapidly after harvest and can provide two to three cuttings in a summer even though it is commonly not planted until June, he says. It is being grown by a number of Midwest hay producers because animals, including cattle and horses, really like it, and because it works well in hay crop rotations, he adds. Since alfalfa after alfalfa is not recommended, rotation to another crop is preferred for at least for one year. Teff a grass and not in the alfalfa legume family can fit that bill, Lindquist says. With Teff the same planting equipment as well as the same hay mowing and baling equipment that you use for other hay crops can be used, he says. It also means the farms rotation acres never have to be out of hay production if thats the plan. The feed quality of Teff is moderate, not as high as pure alfalfa hay, but if cut at the pre-boot stage, higher than most cool season grasses, he says. You can attain crude protein levels of 12 to 16 per cent depending on maturity at harvest and if the crop was fertilized with nitrogen. It meets the nutritional needs of the light working horse, the dry cow and, if supplemented with grain, the growing replacement heifer, he says. Horse owners feel their horses stay healthier and maintain the proper stage of body condition when fed Teff grass hay. Research trials at Michigan State and other universities reveal that Teff varieties can yield three to five tons of dry matter hay per acre. Northern zones may only get two cuttings and yields will be closer to three tons per acre, but southern parts of Michigan and beyond can attain three cuttings and over five tons in good years, he says. The seed is small, 1.25 million seeds per pound, so planting into level, firm seed beds is strongly advised. Planting approximately eight to 10 lbs. of seed per acre is the recommended rate and it should not be sown until the risk of spring frost is gone. If wet, cool spring conditions prevail, waiting for soil warm up is advised as planting in mid-June in trials yielded the best at the MSU Campus. Like all new hay seedings, weeds can be a problem in the first cutting, he warns. If a grass herbicide was used to eliminate the previous sod hay crop, the only weed issue that will normally appear in the first cutting will be broadleaves and they can be easily controlled with timely applications of inexpensive broadleaf weed herbicides. Soil testing and fertilizing to meet the nutritional needs of Teff grass is important, especially making sure it has adequate nitrogen. If a previous hay crop had at least 30 per cent legumes, there may be enough residual nitrogen to grow Teff, he says. If not, it is advised to apply 60 to 80 lbs. per acre of actual nitrogen at planting time. Teff has a finer stem than most cool season grasses, even finer than many alfalfa varieties. Because of this it will lay more tightly in a windrow and not dry as rapidly as some other hays, Lindquist says. With good drying conditions it is not a problem, but at the end of the summer season, or in periods without much sunshine or wind, it can be a challenging crop to dry. Laying a wide swath at mowing time, conditioning the stem and even using a tedder may be necessary to get it to dry properly for baling.
