Reining in dangerous drones with "geo-fences"

    - December 3, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Sales of recreational drones are skyrocketing as photographers, farmers and firefighters realize the incredible views they can capture from high above. Drones carrying small cameras can go where humans can't.

The problem is, that type of consumer cinematography isn't always legal.

"Anybody who's flying above 400 ft is flying is in violation the law. Yes they can fly farther than you can see, but you shouldn't," 3D Robotics co-founder Chris Anderson said. "There's an FAA regulation about that. You can fly below 400 ft -- manned aircraft are above 400 ft, so there's supposed to be a buffer."

Consumer drones have soared to become a $450 million dollar industry, up 45% in the last year, but their future is a bit up in the air. In the last six months, there has been at least 25 close calls with drones reported by airplane pilots and the FAA may crack down on where, how and when drones can fly.

Anderson said their company is taking action to help prevent dangerous flying. While his company's drone could technically fly thousands of feet, a piece of technology is quelling user's dangerous temptations.

"It's called geo-fence, our software limits how high and how far you can go," Anderson said. "We have an obligation as an industry to basically use the intelligence to help people fly more safely."

That won't necessarily stop every concern though. For many, privacy might always be an issue. But Anderson said while drones have the capability, people shouldn't be flying where they can't see.

"You're not allowed to fly over urban areas. FAA rules say you can't fly over visual line of sight, you can't fly over built-up areas," Anderson said. "The point is we already have rules in place but they're not well understood and they're not being well enforced and I think we have an obligation as an industry to say, 'Hey you're in built-up space, you shouldn't be flying here.'"

But Anderson assured there's more to drones than danger. At a price point starting at around $500, people are sending more and more affordable drones into the sky, primarily with GoPro cameras.

"This is the golden age of personal videography. The quality of cameras in our iPhones and GoPros are extraordinary," Anderson said. "YouTube created a marketplace for great videos in your life. We now have the tools, the cameras and software, to take great videos. The only thing we're missing is the thing that Stephen Spielberg has, which is the boom or the crane, the perspective to take it above eye level."

Pineau De Re sticking to hurdles before National defence

    - December 3, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Pineau De Re will not run over fences again before he defends his crown in the Crabbies Grand National next April.

Dr Richard Newlands 11-year-old was a 25-1 winner of the worlds most famous steeplechase at Aintree last spring and his entire campaign is unsurprisingly being geared around a return to Merseyside.

The veteran finished tailed off on his seasonal reappearance over hurdles at Cheltenham last month, but Newland is confident his charge will bounce back in due course.

He is likely to turn out again at Carlisle on Sunday week and Newland is hoping he will be in action at the Cheltenham Festival in March for another crack at the Pertemps Final, having finished a close third in last seasons renewal.

We will know a bit more when he runs at Carlisle. In hindsight, he got very tired at Cheltenham and I was very glad that Daryl (Jacob) did not knock him about, said Newland yesterday.

We try and win every race we can. I was a bit surprised to be called before the stewards (after the Cheltenham race). They were doing their job and it was certainly not a question of the horse not trying we were trying.

He had 11st 12lb in very testing ground and in hindsight the run probably came a couple of weeks too soon. Hopefully, he will put up a better show next time.

Who will be on board Pineau De Re on April 11 remains up in the air.

Leighton Aspell was the man in the limelight last season, while Sam Twiston-Davies, Richard Johnson, Brian Hughes, Jason Maguire and Jacob have all ridden the horse since he joined Newland from Ireland last year.

Newland said: We have no idea who will be riding him in the Grand National Leighton came in as a spare last year and did a fantastic job.

Aditya Chopra and Kajol mend fences?

    - December 3, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

    Kajol

Mumbai: Kajol is ecstatic these days, thanks to her 90s blockbuster Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge celebrating its 1,000th week. According to sources, the actress has also patched up with Yash Raj Films honcho, Aditya Chopra.

Kajol, who was axed from the YRF family and its many big celebrations, has allegedly stepped in for the promotions of the grand celebrations of DDLJs long journey with leading man Shah Rukh Khan and rest of the cast.

When actresses across generations who worked with the late Yash Chopra walked the ramp, Kajols absence had made headlines. She was also not invited for the star-studded premiere of Yashjis last directorial film Jab Tak Hai Jaan. Also, Kajol had to bear the brunt of the tussle between her husband and good friend, says a source. But it does seem like Adi and Kajol have decided to forget the wars of the past.

She had suffered a hairline fracture recently for which she has been limping around. But that didnt stop her from shooting for a TV show with SRK and rest of the DDLJ cast.

And not so long ago, Kajol and Karan Johars renewed ties was the talk of the town. Looks like the star is clearly in a mood to start afresh by re-thinking her equations with close friends. Adding to the developments, those close to the DDLJ gang have revealed that it was SRK and Karan who were instrumental in playing peacemakers between her and Adi.

Jean Beliveau dead at age 83

    - December 3, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

By Bill Beacon, The Canadian Press

MONTREAL - It is hard to imagine a classier hockey player, on and off the ice, than Jean Beliveau.

A supremely skilled centre for 18 seasons for the Montreal Canadiens, the 83-year-old Beliveau was also a gracious spokesman for the team and the sport.

The NHL club lost the man who embodied all the attributes of their dynasty teams of the 1950s, 1960s and 1970s talent, flair, intelligence and success.

He scored 507 goals, won 10 Stanley Cups and was captain for 10 seasons before his retirement in 1971, then moved seamlessly into an executive position with the club.

Words like class and gentleman were attached to Beliveau by virtually everyone who met him.

"Like millions of hockey fans who followed the life and the career of Jean Beliveau, the Canadiens today mourn the passing of a man whose contribution to the development of our sport and our society was unmeasurable," team owner Geoff Molson said in a statement posted on the Canadiens' website.

"Jean Beliveau was a great leader, a gentleman and arguably the greatest ambassador our game has ever known," Molson added.

"Meeting him is not like meeting other stars from the old days," said Beliveaus former linemate Gilles Tremblay, who died last week.

"When people see Bobby Hull, they say: 'Hi Bobby.' When they meet Big Jean, it's always: 'Hi, Mr. Beliveau.' He commands respect."

A supremely skilled centre for 18 seasons for the Montreal Canadiens, the 83-year-old Beliveau was also a gracious spokesman for the team and the sport.

With his death confirmed late Tuesday by a spokesman for the Canadiens, the NHL club lost the man who embodied all the attributes of their dynasty teams of the 1950s, 1960s and 1970s talent, flair, intelligence and success.

He scored 507 goals, won 10 Stanley Cups and was captain for 10 seasons before his retirement in 1971, then moved seamlessly into an executive position with the club.

Canadiens fans who revered Beliveau were given a scare in 2000 when he was diagnosed with throat cancer, but after losing 30 pounds during treatment and enduring "the worst period of my life," he recovered and was soon back in his familiar spot attending nearly every home game with his wife Elise in the seats among the fans. He also survived a stroke in 2012.
