The grass is greener at Comet Bay Primary School thanks to handyman and gardener John Carter.

Mr Carter was recognised for his tireless efforts to keep the school grounds immaculate at the WA Education Awards when he was named school services staff member of the year on Monday.

For the past eight years, Mr Carter has actively worked to enhance learning spaces around the school, ensuring the nature and sensory playgrounds are inviting and exciting for students.

Deputy principal Jacqueline Cooper said Mr Carter worked hard to establish high quality play areas for students and was deserving of the award.

Mrs Cooper said Mr Carter worked closely with the sustainability committee to turn two unused garden beds into vegetable gardens so students could learn lifelong skills about healthy living.

"The vegetable gardens and chicken yard bring great joy and excitement to the children who participate in the programs," she said.

On top of his usual duties, Mrs Cooper said Mr Carter used his love of gardening to provide pastoral care to students.

"John is a mentor and a support for students and is always willing to listen and show exceptional leadership... students will ask to help Mr Carter as a reward for their good behaviour - helping him is seen as a positive reward and an activity that many students aspire to," she said.

Improvements around the school, including a Stephanie Alexander kitchen garden, chicken yard, rejuvenation of the school oval and maintenance of the nature playgrounds, are credited to Mr Carter.
