For Wendell Sohn, 47 plus three was the magic number for retirement.
Forty-seven is the number of years hes been in the business, and three is how many fingers he froze atop an electrical pole where he was repairing a connection last winter.
I wasnt going through that again, he said, choosing to enter retirement before the frigid winter cold arrives again.
At about 10:30 a.m. on a Wednesday two weeks ago, he finished the last of his commitments in a career that started with an appliance repair course in 1964. Sohn had no desire to repair appliances, but there were no electrician courses offered at the vocational school in Jackson at the time.
Sohn worked for a year in Mankato in appliance repair, but when his girlfriend, Carol Sawyer a Jackson native who is now his wife told Sohn an electrician course would be offered in Jackson, he came back and signed up.
Thats what I always wanted to do, he said. I had an older brother that was an electrician too. I always kind of looked up to him.
Fresh out of school, Sohn took a job with Joe Veverka at Jackson Electric in 1967. Hes been an electrician here ever since.
On Jan. 1, 1976, Sohn bought out Veverka and opened Sohn Electric, with Carol keeping the books. The husband-wife business partnership must have worked, because were still together, Sohn said.
Corn dryers, shops, machine sheds and additional electrical capacity were the mainstays of Sohn Electric.
We did mostly farm work, which is more like industrial work nowadays with the size of farmers, Sohn said.

HOUSTON -
The Astrodome is getting an expensive bath in hopes of restoring the iconic stadium.
Green Team Services, a Houston window cleaning service, is testing the Eighth Wonder of the World to determine the best way to wash the Dome.
Brett Robinson, president of Green Team Services, said they use environmentally friendly cleaning solutions that will be delicate enough to preserve the icon, but should also be able to restore the exterior to look like new.
The project is expected to cost $63,800 and was scheduled to begin Monday. Robinson said while they are still determining the best way to move forward with the cleaning and the contract, the actual cleaning phase might not take place for another week.
Harris County leaders said the cleaning should help prevent further decay.
Since 2009 when the Astrodome was decommissioned it seems like countless suggestions have been thrown around for what to do with the Dome. Most of which have come with a lot of debate and last November voters decided against making it a massive convention space.
Harris County Judge Ed Emmett told Local 2 in November that he supports the cleanup while they determine whether to give the Astrodome landmark status.
One of Emmett's suggestion is to make the Dome an indoor multi-use park where they could host anything from archery to concerts.
Leaders are supposed to meet this week to start the process of trying to find a permanent use for the Dome.

To clean the surface, use a damp cloth or sponge and a mild soap or detergent. Difficult stains such as coffee or tea can be removed using a mild household cleaner/detergent and a soft bristle brush, repeating as necessary. If a stain persists, use a paste of baking soda and water and apply with a soft bristled brush. Light scrubbing for 10 to 20 strokes should remove most stains.

Hair, textile and food dyes can cause permanent stains. If dye should happen to spill, wipe it up immediately with dishwashing detergent or an all-purpose cleaner.
Never place pots or dishes directly from the oven or burner on an unprotected laminate surface; such extreme heat can cause cracking or blistering. Do not work with oven cleaners on an unprotected countertop. Wipe spills away promptly and rinse several times with water. Rust removers contain harsh chemicals which will quickly cause permanent damage. If a spill occurs, wipe off all residue immediately, wash thoroughly with soapy water and rinse several times.

Formica brand laminate is designed for beauty and durability. Like any surfacing materials, however, it can be damaged by abuse and carelessness. When you use it where recommended and care for it properly, it will give you years of satisfaction.
PROTECTING THE SURFACEBefore selecting the surface material, consider the type of use it will receive, as well as its texture, color, and reflective values. A rough-textured surface has different advantages, depending upon use, than a smooth-textured surface. High gloss finish laminates, for example, are not recommended for use in heavy-duty applications such as countertops.
Scratch and Impact ProtectionFormica brand laminate is resistant to scratches and impacts under normal use conditions. Use cutting boards, chopping blocks, or other protective surfaces.
Use place mats, doilies, and trivets on laminate surfaces when necessary.
Follow recommendations for cleaning do not use abrasive cleaners, powders, steel wool, sandpaper, or Scotch-Brite scouring pads (see Cleaning section).

Weeks after ground was broken for the new Reagor-Dykes Toyota at 1220 S. I-27, the newly issued building permit for the project caused construction values for November to soar.
As an added result, Novembers building activity brought the citys year-to-date construction activity to $10.5 million, almost double the $5.6 million recorded for the same period in 2013.
Ground was broken in late September on the Reagor-Dykes project, and the city issued a $2 million commercial remodel permit on Nov. 17 since the new facility will incorporate an existing structure on the site along the I-27 west service road. The new auto dealership will be located south of the Reagor-Dykes Toyota pre-owned location and north of Barley Funeral Home.
Reagor-Dykes, according to previous announcements, will construct a state-of-the-art Image II Toyota facility on the 10.5-acre site.
We anticipate hiring 50 new employees to start, Joe Landin, Reagor-Dykes marketing manager, said during groundbreaking ceremonies, and grow to around 100 in the following areas sales management, sales, office/clerical, mechanical technicians and auto detail.
As local general manager, Eddie Ashburn will oversee operations at both Plainview locations.
The current location at 808 N. I-27 will house the Ford and Lincoln franchises, with the new location at 1220 S. I-27 housing a Toyota-only dealership.
Novembers building report, released Monday, includes a $100,000 commercial addition at Templo Emanuel Church, 2502 W. 19th; a $2,000 commercial remodeling project at 915 Ash; a $1,500 commercial remodel to add a wall in the new Plainview Commons shopping center at 1601 N. I-27 A; and a $300 commercial remodel for a restroom at 620 Ash.
Other projects receiving construction permits during November include two residential additions for a total value of $2,100; three residential remodel projects, $9,100; two garage/carport projects, $1,050; one storage building at South Plains College Plainview; $10,000; and two signs, $200.
In all, the city issued 15 permits during November for a combined value of $2,126,250. That brings the year-to-date total to $10,515,155. Last month, the city issued 21 permits for a combined value of $82,529.
