    GrowthStory's Billion Dollar Dreams

    - December 1, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Through their startup platform GrowthStory, Meena and Krishnan Ganesh are launching a slew of ventures in three months. Though there is potential, their businesses are fraught with challenges too

Bangalore-based entrepreneurs Krishnan and Meena Ganesh

rishnan and Meena Ganesh, the Bangalore-based entrepreneurial couple, have bet big on a simple mantra: Do what the competition is doing, but do it perfectly. And that is the foundation of their company, GrowthStory, one of Indias largest startup platforms.

The next few months will be crucial as they plan to launch four new ventures and expand their two-month-old food services businessall under the GrowthStory umbrella. But their challenge lies in the first half of their mantra: Do what the competition is doing. By entering markets that are relatively crowded, the husband-and-wife team cannot afford any misstep. They are developing app-driven startups that operate in areas such as technology education, home improvement and handyman services, food and catering and cloud-based software, all of which already have several players jostling for consumer attention. But they believe that they have what it takes to grab a large chunk of the market-share.

They are not only gearing up to take on local (and later national) competition with their food and on-demand home services businesses, but they are also setting the stage so that their three tech startups can compete with established international players in mature markets in the US and Australia. But GrowthStory, set up in 2011, can take comfort from the second half of the power couples mantra: Do it perfectly.

We want to operate in a space where we will have an unfair advantage. Today, if you want to build a billion-dollar business, you need an unfair advantage, Krishnan tells Forbes India. We are trying to create each venture under GrowthStory as a billion-dollar company in the next five to seven years. And this requires rapid scaling up, capital, strong network and corporate governance. Each business should be able to bring disruption in the space it operates by using technology and the internet, which are our core competencies.

Meena and Krishnan are aiming high, say those who have been tracking their business model. He (Krishnan) is certainly pursuing a super-ambitious model of taking multiple concurrent bets and promising to work hard to accelerate his ventures, to connect them to talent, ramp up early customers, and raise good-sized doses of early funds at attractive valuations, says Ravi Gururaj, chairman, Nasscom Product Council, and co-founder of HBS Alumni Angels (India chapter).

However, Gururaj feels that GrowthStory has all the elements of a new generation venture capital (VC) firm, including in-house seed cash, proven hands on entrepreneurial expertise, common operational capabilities and an inherent to-go-big-fast approach. Its an audacious way of doing business, one which only the Ganeshes seem uniquely qualified to drive at hard, he says.

The results of GrowthStorys ambitious incubation plans will be visible only after three to four years. In the early stage investment segment, a portfolio is a mixed bag when it comes to the growth and sustenance of its firms. The rule of thumb is that a third of an early-stage portfolio is expected to fare very well, one-third is expected to be average-performing, and the remaining usually fail or die. Incubation is a high-risk and high-reward game. In no portfolio can every firm become a $1 billion business, says Mukul Singhal, vice president of SAIF Partners, a sector agnostic investment firm. When I do a seed stage deal, I know that 75 percent firms will fail. Its a law of nature that cannot be defied.

But Krishnan and Meena aim to break this rule. They have considerable experience in the entrepreneurial space, having built and successfully exited three startups: Customer Asset (a call centre and offshoring services company) which they sold to ICICI Bank for $20 million in 2003, Marketics Technologies (a data analytics firm) acquired by BPO company WNS in 2007 for $63.5 million, and online education venture TutorVista. The couple made headlines in 2011 when they sold TutorVista to the UK-based Pearson Group for $213 million.

    Gutter cleaning | Angies List

If you want extra protection for your gutters and to clean your gutters less often, gutter guards are a great option to consider. But if you goal is to never get up on a ladder again to scoop out leaves, you are out of luck with this option. Even the best gutter guard systems require regularly cleaning every few years.

Gutter guards are designed to prevent clogs by allowing water to flow to the gutter while keeping debris out. There are several types of guards available but not every type is right for every environment, so understanding exactly how each system works will allow you to choose the one that's best for your home.

    Types of gutter guards

You can generally classify gutter guards into one of three categories: screens, inserts or reverse curves.

Screens are the most common and work by covering your existing gutter with a membrane that allows water through, but blocks debris. The screens can be simple, like the screens that cover your windows, or complex with several layers of fine mesh to block even the smallest of particles. Like all filters, screens will need to be removed and cleaned from time to time.

Inserts are the least expensive and easiest to install. These guards fill the gutter with a porous material, such as foam, which allows water to filter through while blocking most debris. Inserts will need to be regularly removed and cleaned, and smaller pieces of debris may still collect in your gutter over time.

Reverse curves are slightly more advanced. They direct water over a curve and into a small slit while allowing gravity to force other debris to fall off the roof. The best reverse-curve systems require little maintenance, but while theyre efficient at keeping debris out, they can run into water collection issues during heavy storms.

Gutter guard installation procedures and cost

Gutter guards systems can range widely in price from just a few dollars to upwards of $30 per lineal foot installed. The average home has about 200 feet of gutter and $1,500 is an average starting cost for professional gutter guard installation.

Foam guards are usually the cheapest type of gutter guard and require minimal installation.

Soccis Notebook: Patriots Prepared For The Sounds And Sod At Lambeau Field

    - December 1, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

BOSTON (CBS) Welcome to Green Bay on a game-day morning. Our radio crew arrived in Wisconsin on Saturday and dined at Lombardis, where for us steak wasnt a sometimes thing; it was the only thing. But not until this morning did we get the true flavor of the area.

A local television newscast led its report with a story about roughly 400 people showing up to shovel snow out of the Lambeau Field stands and followed-up with todays forecast. Before the Packers-Patriots conclude their encounter, temperatures are expected to dip into the teens. The wind chill should be in single digits by early evening, before plummeting well below zero overnight.

Thankfully, by then well be on our way to SoCal. And so with San Diego to look forward to, here are a couple of thoughts related to todays game in Green Bay.

HIS BARK MAKES HIS BITE WORSE

As convincing as Aaron Rodgers appears on TV, being humiliated by Hans and Franz or humbled by practitioners of the discount double check, his most memorable performances in a lead role occur when Green Bays Lambeau Field is his stage.

Thats where Rodgers shines at his animated best in living color gold helmet, green jersey, gold pants executing well-rehearsed plays and improvising in the most critical, unscripted moments that confront every NFL quarterback.

He does it with show-stopping athleticism, an arm to strike short and deep and legs to escape any predicament. And when he really wants to steal a play, if not a scene, Rodgers uses his voice.

In fact, hes so adept at fooling defenders by varying the cadence of his snap counts, The New York Times devoted a story solely to the subject last Sunday. Five days later, Patriots head coach Bill Belichick indicated that Rodgers deception by inflection was more than fit to print in this weeks scouting report,

Great at it, Belichick said Friday morning. Hes great at it.

Though other quarterbacks, including the one he coaches in New England, are good at inducing defenders to jump offsides in short-yardage situations, none in Belichicks mind manipulate opponents like Rodgers.
