    Reconstructing Black Forest

    - December 1, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

A house is fully engulfed with flames in the midst of the Black Forest Fire northeast of Colorado Springs on June 12, 2013. (Helen H. Richardson, Denver Post file)

There are 154 new homes in the Black Forest neighborhood, and nearly 18 months after the devastating fire, more than half of the hundreds of houses destroyed are on track to being rebuilt.

But home construction is a small part of how Black Forest residents measure recovery, a process that could involve decades of forest restoration and changing the community's culture.

The 2013 Black Forest fire was El Paso County's second devastating blaze in two years, and recovery managers quickly learned that Black Forest could not compare to the 2012 Waldo Canyon fire.

When Eddie Bracken formed the recovery nonprofit Black Forest Together, the plan was to follow the example of Colorado Springs Together, another nonprofit that organized debris removal and focused on rebuilding the 347 homes destroyed in the Mountain Shadows neighborhood in 2012.

But as residents grappled with homeless livestock, thousands of charred trees and the loss of home businesses, it became clear that Black Forest would have to forge its own path to recovery.

Unlike the more suburban Mountain Shadows, Black Forest is an isolated community where residents sought solitude among the dense ponderosa pines. Now, those living trees have become the area's greatest hazard because of decades of overgrowth.

Black Forest Together's focus is on the future of the forest, said Scott MacDonald, Black Forest Together's forest recovery program director.

MacDonald and Kathy Russell, a resident and nonprofit volunteer, have encouraged neighbors to band together and create community fire mitigation plans that require them to cut down live trees.

"There's a heavier price to pay" if residents don't mitigate, Russell said. "If you love the forest, you have to cut some of it down."

Barn-raising planned at Johnny Cash home

    - December 1, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

    By - Associated Press - Sunday, November 30, 2014

JONESBORO, Ark. (AP) - Hoping to collect money for a barn-raising at the site of the boyhood home of country music legend Johnny Cash, the Arkansas State University Alumni Association is planning an online fundraising campaign for Tuesday.

The campaign is scheduled for what is being called Giving Tuesday, with the association asking alumni, friends of the university and Johnny Cash fans to contribute.

Were trying to counteract the commercialism of Black Friday and Cyber Monday with Giving Tuesday, Elaine Poynter, director of annual giving at the A-State Alumni office, told the Jonesboro Sun (http://bit.ly/1B36baI). Its a chance for people to give back.

Arkansas States Heritage Sites program has overseen the renovation and restoration of the Historic Dyess Colony and the Johnny Cash Boyhood Home in northeastern Arkansas.

In the book Recollections by J. R. Cash, by Cashs daughter, Tara Cash Schwoebel, she said the barn - especially the hayloft - has sentimental value as a special place where her father liked being alone as a boy. Plans for the barn include an education center and a classroom for visiting school groups.

Using archival photographs as a guide, Poynter said the plan is to eventually add a chicken coop, a smokehouse and an outhouse at the site.

Plan panel replacement likely in December

    - December 1, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

New Delhi: Work has moved into top gear for finalising the name and structure for the new institution that will replace the 64-year old Planning Commission and the same may be unveiled this December.

"The Prime Minister has convened a meeting of the chief ministers on December 7 to seek their view points on the structure of the institution which would ultimately replace the Planning Commission," an official source said.

The Commission has received many suggestions regarding the name and role of the new body. Some of the suggested names are Sustainable Development Commission, National Development Agency, Social Economic Development Commission or Bharat Pragati Lakshya.

Besides, there have been reports about the new body being named as Niti Aayog or Policy Commission. The new institution, which is likely to be headed by the Prime Minister as was the case in Planning Commission, may have four divisions-- Inter-state council, plan evaluation office, UIDAI and DBT.

All the divisions would have experts from the Centre and state governments as also experts from the industry. The Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) Mission earlier was part the Planning Commission but was moved to the Finance Ministry later.

According to sources, the new body could also be the secretariat for the inter-state council which is at present under the home ministry and met rarely during the UPA term.

This council used to meet regularly during the previous NDA regime. Prime Minister Narendra Modi in his Independence Day speech had announced that the Commission would be abolished and replaced with a more relevant institution.

Since then the Commission has held several meetings with experts to discuss the new structure of the proposed institution. Country's first Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru had set up the Planning Commission to steer the nation's economic destiny at that time. Set up by a Cabinet Resolution, the Commission has enjoyed power and prestige with Prime Minister as its Chairman.

Its most important functions have been fixing targets for sectoral growth and allocate resources. The Deputy Chairman of the Commission has often been a political stalwart holding the rank of a cabinet minister.

Gulzarilal Nanda, V T Krishnamachari, C Subramaniam, P N Haksar, Manmohan Singh, Pranab Mukherjee, K C Pant, Jaswant Singh, Madhu Dandavate, Mohan Dharia and R K Hegde had been deputy chaiman at differnt points of time. Montek Singh Ahluwalia was the last deputy chairman.

Pilot Survives Second Plane Crash in Six Years

    - December 1, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

WEST HARTFORD, Conn. The pilot of a single-engine plane that made an emergency landing on a bus-only roadway says it's the second air crash he has survived and he's considering giving up flying. Danny Hall, a 48-year-old roofing company owner from Torrington, walked away from the crash landing Saturday afternoon in West Hartford with only soreness in his back. In 2008, he landed his plane in a river after the engine failed.

On Saturday, Hall said his Skyline Cessna experienced engine problems and lost power while flying from Robertson Field in Plainville to Hartford-Brainard Airport. He radioed a controller at the Hartford airport while looking for a place to put the plane down. "I said, 'Tell my kids I love them if I don't make it.' He said, 'OK. Good luck,'" Hall said. The plane narrowly missed several homes and businesses, and a wing broke off during the crash. Six years ago, Hall survived a plane crash into the Pawcatuck River in Westerly, Rhode Island. He said an FAA investigation found that mice had built a nest in the plane and when he pulled a device that prevents icing, the mice and their nest were sucked into the carburetor, causing the engine to seize up.

Pilot Danny Hall landed his single engine plane on a bus-only roadway in West Hartford, Conn., on Saturday.

News 4 This Morning shares numerous stories from the broadcast online as well, and here's a look at some of the most popular stories for the month of November!

Each year, new toys and games are added to the National Toy Hall of Fame, these can be classic or new, but are deemed the most popular, creative and influential with children. This year, bubbles, little green army men, and the Rubiks Cube were the three additions.

A popular game system that was introduced eight years ago last month was the Nintendo Wii. This video game console was a hit with passionate gamers and those who had never played one, thanks to motion-controlled games like Wii Sports along with a variety of other games across all genres.

Six-month-old Aleesa in the Birmingham area was really into watching the local newscast, ignoring the toys in front of her and her mother as the report continued.

On Friday, News 4's Jessica Leicht was live at the JCPenney at Wiregrass Commons Mall. Throughout our show, she had live reports talking about how busy it was there, and also interviews with customers and more.

Disney and Pixar confirmed that a fourth toy story movie is being made. Nothing is known about the plot at this time, but John Lasseter of Pixar said he had a story come to him that he just had to make.

Grand opening slated for Missouri military museum

    - December 1, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Charles Machon talks about a section of the Museum of Military History, which features the history of black soldiers who served very early in Missouris history as a state. This and other displays will soon be open to the public at the new location of the museum on the grounds at the Missouri National Guard headquarters in Jefferson City. Photo by Julie Smith.

Visitors will pass by a fighter jet and yesteryear tanks to enter the Museum of Missouri Military History after its Dec. 7 grand opening at a new location.

They will walk into the shared lobby with the Patriot Center, the first right after entering the Ike Skelton Training Site, before being greeted at the visitor kiosk with looping photos of the museums holdings.

Maj. Alan Brown builds a childrens corner in the Museum of Military History at the Missouri National Guard headquarters. The local museum will serve as the anchor for the newly developed Veterans Trail. The trail includes this museum and more than 40 existing memorials, monuments and grave markers within about a 30-mile radius from Jefferson City.

The three-story high ceiling of the nearly 7,000-square-foot facility gives the museums new location an even larger feel. Visitors will have space to navigate the dozens of themed exhibits, including large weaponry, full uniforms and accoutrements and lots of other artifacts.

In the back of the display area is a field tent set up for films, expected to be popular with the dozens of elementary field trips that visit during their day at the Capitol. And in the front, children will enjoy the corner with real uniforms and items they can touch and try on.

Visitors with smartphones will be able to access additional information about each exhibit, using QR codes.

All of these features were not possible at the museums former location.
