Sydney landmark should house future city school, say top architects

    - November 30, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

One of the two major public buildings on Sydney's Bridge Street should be converted into a much-needed city school, says a group of prominent Australian architects.

The Department of Education building and the adjacent Department of Lands building are being offloaded by the Baird government for "no longer meeting their requirements"after more than a century of civic use.

The architecturally prized landmarks, known as "the sandstones", are being sold on a 99-year lease through an international expressions of interest campaign closing on December 3. The marketing pitch describes it as a "rare" chance for a buyer to convert the two buildings into boutique luxury hotels.

But eight architects and academics are appealing to the Premier and Treasurer to keep the historically significantbuildings in public ownership by realising the Education building's potential as "a Sydney city public school in the making".

Australian Institute of Architects' gold medallists Richard Leplastrier and Peter Myers, both of whom worked withJornUtzonon the Sydney OperaHouse, are among those who put their names to a letter sent on Saturday.

"Surely here is an unlikely to be repeated opportunity to make a very fine city-based school in a buildingthat belongs to the citizensand is currently under the custodianshipof the Department of Education," the letter says.

The group argues the building was "readily adaptable" for use as a public high school; a purpose that would require less intrusive changes to the historic structure than a hotel.

"Basically, you could call it Bridge Street High School, just write it in chalk on the wall and that's it; everything's there," said Mr Myers, who has designed plans that show how the building's internal courtyard could be converted into a 500-seat theatre.

Nova Centre opening delayed by a year, customers already booked

    - November 30, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

The Nova Centre complex in downtown Halifax is delayed nearly a year, a major setback for the citys new convention centre.

The half-billion-dollar development, which includes the new Halifax Convention Centre, a hotel, financial towers and retail space, is now expected to be substantially completed by Sept. 30, 2016.

An official opening for the $164-million convention centre, cost-shared by the three levels of government, is planned for January 2017.

Joe Ramia, head of Argyle Developments Inc., attributed the setback to design changes following public consultation, the approval process and a tough construction season last winter.

The delay is a major headache for Trade Centre Ltd., an arms-length provincial Crown corporation that oversees the World Trade and Convention Centre and its successor.

Trade Centre event promoters have spent months pursuing top national and international conferences and have already booked 30 events for the new convention centre, more than half of which are scheduled for 2016.

The Crown corporation issued a news release last January underscoring the conferences it had booked for that year.

The Canadian Library Association was cited as one key event it had secured, bringing hundreds of delegates in May 2016. Valoree McKay, the associations executive director, said she was informed Thursday of the construction delays.

Were aware, and were considering our options, McKay said.

Rare art key feature of historic Gwinnett home

    - November 30, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

In just a few months, visitors to the Gwinnett Environmental and Heritage Center (GEHC) will be able to tour one of the oldest surviving homes in Gwinnett the Chesser-Williams House. The home is historically significant not only for its age, but also because it is decorated inside and out with rare folk art paintings.

One of the things that makes this house so valuable is the art, said GEHC Director Steve Cannon.

The art is believed to have been the work of an itinerant German artist who painted in exchange for room and board during his travels from North Carolina to Texas in the late 1800s. Only seven other structures are known to have intact examples of the artists work and none of his exterior paintings apart from those found on the Chesser-Williams House are known to have survived. All of the painting was done freehand which resulted in some characteristic marks which enabled historians to identify his work at homes and churches across the region.
