Tricky tree removal involves untangling limbs to prevent damage to homes

    - November 29, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

    JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -

After severe storms blew through Arlington early last week, several trees were left damaged and hanging dangerously over homes.

The tree removal proved to be a major undertaking because the trees were entangled in other trees, and residents of the Grove Avenue neighborhood were thankful Friday that the trees have been removed.

One street was completely demolished and about 8-10 trees in houses on Weller so we're very fortunate there isn't a lot of damage, said homeowner Laurie Murphy.

It cost Murphy $8,000 to have the tree hanging over her home removed.

Seven guys from Big Ben's Tree Service took down the two trees: one 95-foot-tall pine tree and a 90-foot-tall oak tree. Once one tree was uprooted, it took up half of the backyard.

You have septic tanks under the trees, sidewalks, we had to take fences down to protect everything, you've got loose limbs at the top of the tree that could fall while we are doing it, said Ben Geiger, the owner of Big Ben's.

Geiger said his company sees things like this all the time, and said it's important to hire a professional to remove damaged trees.

Always get a certificate of insurance in your hand, Geiger said. We are the most dangerous people you can hire. That's why you want workman's comp and general liability. I'm the owner of the company. I try to be on every job that's over a house. It's dangerous.

Homeowners in the neighborhood are working with their insurance companies to try to get everything taken care of before Christmas.

Reading now embraces 'ugly' Christmas tree with 'Charlie Brown' comparison

    - November 29, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

After scrapping plans to get rid of a Christmas tree that was decried as "ugly," officials in Reading, Pa., will instead embrace the comparisons its conifer has drawn to the plot of "A Charlie Brown Christmas."

The tree will be decorated with a single red ornamental bulb "in honor of the famous Charlie Brown Christmas tree," the city said in a news release.

The Reading administration and city council are also planning a series of volunteer events "that will highlight the season of giving and pay homage to the Charlie Brown Christmas tree and everything it stands for," the release states.

The spindly 50-foot spruce was taken from a city park to serve as a last-minute stand-in after plans to procure the city's official holiday tree from a farm fell through.

Topped with a lighted pretzel and erected last week in downtown Reading's Penn Square, it quickly became an object of ridicule, with residents decrying it as "pathetic" and calling for its removal.

"Honestly, they might as well put nothing out here," one man told WFMZ-TV.

Word of the saga quickly spread online, and Reading's City Hall was flooded with phone calls from around the country, officials said in a news release.

About half of those callers urged the city to keep the so-called "ugly" tree, and the administrationagreed to let it stand, according to the release.

    One Tree Hill remains recovered

Auckland Council says it is pleased the remains of the One Tree Hill pine tree have been recovered after being illegally offered for sale on Trade Me.

The remains which are the property of Auckland Council were being stored by one of Councils arborist contractors. When the listing of the remains became known, the contractor contacted police who seized it for return to the contractors yard.

Auckland Council will be in discussion with The Tpuna Maunga o Tmaki Makaurau Authority as to the circumstances of the remains removal and its future care. The remains are in a poor state with rot and mould.

John Keys credibility has taken a hammering this week at least among the 50% of the electorate who have always had doubts about him on that score.

The other substantial story of the week has been about Andrew Littles debut as Labour leader, which has received top marks, especially among the 25% of the electorate still voting Labour. According to some reports, the Labour caucus has been in seventh heaven about Littles success this week in taking it to the government in the House. More>>

FORT LEE - With the Dec. 9 bond referendum to expand district space drawing closer, school and municipal officials made one of their final pitches to residents at a community forum on Nov. 19, urging them to "Vote Schools, Vote Kids."

The $49.8 million plan calls for a ten-room addition to School No. 2 for Pre-K and special needs students, the relocation of the district's fifth- and sixth-graders into a new 33-classroom wing at the middle school and upgrades to the high school track and field area.

    CHRISTOPHER TRENTO/Photos

    most efficient,' he said.

If approved, the expansions will end an overcrowding strain that has forced art, music and other classes into libraries and hallways and students at School No. 2 into trailers and provide enough space for the 400 students expected to enroll in the school system in the next five years.

The district has absorbed the addition of 350 students over the past five years with no new construction.

Mayor Mark Sokolich was also present during the Nov. 19 community forum to speak on the school referendum.

"This, of all the plans, is not only the most creative but is financially and fiscally responsible and the most efficient," said interim Superintendent Paul Saxton, noting that the reconfigured middle school will allow students to better identify with each other and create a school culture.
