    Dont Panic!

Most of us have immune systems that are fully capable of resisting the effects of fungi described below. As a result it would be highly unlikely for any of us to suffer any of the ill effects described. But if fungal colonies are allowed to persist and multiply then the high concentrations of the molds and their volatile organic chemical metabolites might be sufficient to increase the risks from our exposure to them.

Stachybotrys chartarum (atra) molds can thrive on water damaged, cellulose-rich material in buildings such as sheet rock, paper, ceiling tiles, insulation backing, wallpaper, etc. In the majority of cases where Stachybotrys is found indoors, water damage has gone unnoticed or ignored since it requires extended periods of time with increased levels of moisture for growth to occur. Stachybotrys is usually black and slimy in appearance. Events of water intrusion that are not addressed quickly tends to support the growth of more xerophilic fungi such as Pencillium and Aspergillus.

Stachybotrys is another fungi that has the ability to produce mycotoxins, ones that are toxic and can be immunosuppressive. Exposure to these mycotoxins can result through inhalation, ingestion, and dermal exposure. Symptoms of exposure include dermatitis, cough, rhinitis, nose bleeds, cold and flu-like symptoms, headache, general malaise, and fever.

The Cladosporium genera of mold are pigmented dark green to black in the front, and black on the reverse with a velvety to powdery texture. One of the most commonly isolated from indoor and outdoor air, Cladosporium spp. are found on decaying plants, woody plants, food, straw, soil, paint, textiles, and the surface of fiberglass duct liner in the interior of supply ducts.

There are over 30 species in the Cladosporium genus. The most common are C. elatum, C. herbarum, C. sphaerospermum, and C. cladosporioides. These fungi are the causative agents of skin lesions, keratitis, nail fungus, sinusitis, asthma, and pulmonary infections. Acute symptoms of exposure to Cladosporium are edema and bronchiospasm, and chronic exposure may lead to pulmonary emphysema.

Aspergillus is the most common genus of fungi in our environment (it especially likes to grow on corn plants) with more than 160 different species of mold. Sixteen of these species have been documented as causing human disease. Aspergillosis is now the 2nd most common fungal infection requiring hospitalization in the United States.

Aspergillus fumigatus. The most encountered species causing infection. It is seen abundantly in decomposing organic material, such as self-heating compost piles, since it readily grows at temperatures up to 55 C. People who handle contaminated material often develop hypersensitivity to the spores of Aspergillus and may suffer severe allergic reactions upon exposure.

Aspergillus flavus. The 2nd most encountered fungi in cases of Aspergillus infection. It is also known to produce the mycotoxin aflatoxin, one of the most potent carcinogens known to man. In the 1960s, 100,000 turkey poults in Great Britain died from ingesting contaminated feed. Most countries have established levels for aflatoxin in food. However, the risks associated with airborne exposure are not adequately studied and no exposure standards exist.

Aspergillus niger. The 3rd most common Aspergillus fungi associated with disease and the most common of any Aspergillus species in nature due to its ability to grow on a wide variety of substrates. This species may cause a fungal ball, which is a condition where the fungus actively proliferates in the human lung, forming a ball. It does so without invading the lung tissue.

    Economical landfill gas treatment

    - November 28, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

28.11.2014 - (idw) FIZ Karlsruhe Leibniz-Institut fr Informationsinfrastruktur GmbH

On-site regeneration of activated carbon for gas treatment Landfill gas sourced from landfill sites and sewage treatment plants can also be burned in combined heat and power plants and used for energy purposes in place of conventional natural gas. To prevent premature wear to turbines and motors, however, the gas must first be cleansed of undesirable impurities such as organic silicon compounds. The BINE Projektinfo brochure Clean use of landfill gas (11/2014) presents a method by which the adsorption agent is regenerated on-site. Consequently, the activated carbon must be exchanged less frequently. The objective is to reduce costs and to make the process of gas purification more efficient.

Adsorption with activated carbon and subsequent regeneration is the most common procedure followed in gas purification. Siloxa Engineering AG together with Fraunhofer UMSICHT have developed an on-site regeneration method for activated carbon through adsorptive purification. The procedure has undergone testing in field trials at the Vereinigte Ville landfill site in Erftstadt-Liblar near Cologne. In order to additionally reduce the load of polar organic compounds such as trimethylsilanol, the researchers recommend a process of pre-purification by means of seepage water washing.

The research group developed a theoretical procedural concept for a gas purification plant with a throughput of 1,000 Nm per hour: For this concept, the research team also produced an operating costs analysis for an average silicon load present in the landfill gas. Based on this information, the researchers calculations determined there to be a considerable advantage in the new method in terms of specific operating costs over a conventional adsorption system involving the exchange of activated carbons. Further tests are needed under boundary application-like conditions to develop the market viability of the on-site method.

Mongolia approves Guildford Coals capacity expansion projects

    - November 28, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

EBR Staff Writer Published 27 November 2014

The Mineral Resource Authority of Mongolia (MRAM) has approved Guildford Coals proposed capacity expansion at the Baruun Noyon Uulcoal (BNU) mine in Noyon Soum of the Umnu Gobi province.

The approval was given by the MRAM's Mineral Resources Profession Committee.

As part of the expansion, the mining capacity at the BNU will be increased to 1.5 million tons in 2015 and two million tons in 2016. Guildford Coal managing director Peter Kane said: "MRAM's approval to increase our mining capacity is a significant development for Guildford.

"It allows us to ramp up production at the BNU Mine beyond the recently announced targeted production figures for 2015, if it makes economic sense to do so."

Meanwhile, the company said that washing and laboratory testing of the second trial batch of coal from the BNU confirmed that the project's coal can be washed to produce a low-ash premium quality hard coking coal with low sulphur.

The lab tests were carried out at Alfred H Knight and Bureau Veritas laboratories in Ulaanbaatar.

Further test work is being conducted at the China Coal Research Institute in Beijing.

D.C. nonprofit puts the happy in Thanksgiving by feeding ill area residents

    - November 28, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Karen Washington could only call the delivery a blessing. Two volunteers with the nonprofit organization Food & Friends had knocked on the doors of her Capitol Heights home, carrying a bag packed with a full Thanksgiving dinner that could feed a half-dozen.

Washington thanked them. She hugged them. Come in, come in! she invited.

In the kitchen, Washingtons sons were cutting up peppers and chopping celery. They began unpacking the feast bestowed upon them: roasted turkey, sweet potatoes, cornbread stuffing, green beans, dinner rolls, cranberry sauce.

Washington, 49, could not eat any of it. But it didnt matter.

Before my illness, my Thanksgiving was commercialized and fast, Washington said. But I feel like Im blessed.Thank you.

Tenminutes before, they were all strangers. Now, Petie Bonbrest and her longtime boyfriend, Bill Enselman, were in the living room of a woman giving them an unexpected display of gratitude. They, too, began to wipe away tears.

Bonbrest said: We are blessed to have met you today.

The meaning of Thanksgiving dinner can seem a little obscured at first, when its quickly prepared and packaged by an assembly line of volunteers wearing red hairnets. Every day, the organization based near the Fort Totten Metro station delivers free nutritious, curated meals for those facing life-threatening illnesses. Thanksgiving is Food & Friends biggest delivery day.

For the holiday, the chef abandons the usual nutrition-conscience meal and pieces together a hearty traditional menu. Volunteers over the course of the week spice nearly 10,000pounds of turkey, slice 780pounds of collard greens and dice 975pounds of glazed sweet potatoes.

About 800deliveries were made around the region Thursday, twice as many as the usual haul. The centerpiece is the 12-pound turkey.
