Park City, Utah (PRWEB) November 28, 2014
As the winter months approach, Kalia Floors, a well known Utah flooring company, announces that they are offering free consultations for Park City residents to familiarize themselves with preventitive maintenance for hardwood floors during wet months. The announcement reaffirms the company as a leader in hardwood floor installation within the Beehive State.
Utah experiences different seasons all throughout the year. The different seasons have different effects on a home's humidity. And most homeowners know that the biggest enemy of hardwood floors, solid and engineered, is moisture. The ideal humidity level to keephardwood flooring in the best shape in a home is between 35 and 55 percent. This way, the air is not too dry to cause hardwood floors to dry up and it is not too moist to let the moisture seep into hardwood floors and cause expansion.
Founder of Kalia Floors, Scott Heath, comments. "Too dry air inside a house can cause hardwood floors to splinter or crack. Alternatively, too moist air in the house allows moisture to seep into hardwood flooring and cause it to expand. The expansion causes hardwood flooring to 'cup.'"
With winter at the doorstep of Utah residents, particularly those in higher elevations like Park City, many homeowners are already starting to use heaters. The use of a heater keeps the house warm but it also causes the air to become dry which may result in drying out hardwood floors. Mr. Heath elaborates. "An initial sign that hardwood flooring is already starting to dry up is the presence of gaps between the flooring that hasn't been present before." He continues. "If gaps are already showing it is important to immediately consult a specialist on hardwood floors. If no intervention is made then damage can worsen and repairs can become more costly."
There are ways to maintain the ideal humidity level of the inside of the homes. It is best to get a professional opinion from an expert in hardwood flooring or a home's original hardwood floor supplier. A small consultation can save homeowners big costs by protecting flooring during varying seasons.

We are long-term cyclists and ride our handy folding bikes a lot, both around Humboldt and beyond. Purists, we never thought we'd succumb to an electric bike. But last July, we surrendered and invested in one that we now share and love.
We walk as much as possible, and do most errands either on foot or bicycle. But there are times when cycling takes too much time, or is just plain unpleasant. Weekly trips from Eureka to Arcata on a bike would entail at least 40 minutes each way on the freeway. A trip through the Arcata Bottoms is lovely, but takes even longer.
When we visited Southeast Asia last year, the number of electric bikes in (usually flat) cities and towns was amazing. The most popular model was manufactured in Vietnam, cost around $500, and had a range of about 15 miles before recharging. Seeing all these quiet, economical bikes was inspiring, and once we were back home, all the notes from an Humboldt State University Osher Lifelong Learning Institute class on electric bikes came out and the online research began. The choices were daunting.
Complete bicycle or kit? That was pretty easy. We already had an old but very comfortable hybrid bike that we rarely used. Why pay for a bike when we already owned one? That narrowed the choices down, but there was still more to decide.
Power hub on the front or back wheel? From the rider's point of view, they feel much the same, so we went with the simpler front wheel replacement.
Automatic or manual control? A controller in most kits sends more or less power to the hub, depending on the effort exerted by the rider. It's the bike version of an automatic transmission in a car, and since both of us prefer stick-shifts, we went with manual control.
On-off switch or adjustable throttle? I read online that most users with throttles keep them at full, so we elected for the simplicity of an on-off thumb button on the handlebars.
Range? In order to cycle from Eureka to Arcata and back, we needed a battery with at least a 20-mile range.
Having gone through that decision tree, online reviews and comments convinced us that a Seattle-based company, Clean Republic, had solid value-for-money kits. For $800, we bought their "Hill Topper" kit consisting of a replacement front wheel, a 20-mile range Lithium-ion battery and on-off button. Their kits start at $400, for an 8-mile range.
Installation was pretty simple, although not the three-minute (!) conversion touted on the website, mainly because we had to file our bike's front forks to accept the new wheel's slightly wider axle, as well as add a couple of thick washers for a good fit. But the next day the bike was tooling along Waterfront Drive at 18 mph (according to our GPS) without pedaling. A week later, it made a 25-mile ride combining pedal and battery power, and came home with juice to spare. After an overnight charge, the bike was ready to go again.

The New Magic Carpet
The 28-year-old sat in silence for five days in a Los Angeles gallery wearing a brown paper bag on his head branded with the words, I AM NOT FAMOUS ANYMORE.

In an email interview with Dazed Digital he told how the woman allegedly stripped and raped him on the third day.
He wrote: One woman came with her boyfriend, who was outside the door when this happened.
[She] whipped my legs for 10 minutes and then stripped my clothing and proceeded to rape me.There were hundreds of people in line when she walked out with dishevelled hair and smudged lipstick. It was no good, not just for me but her man as well.
He went on to explain that his partner Mia Goth - who was waiting in line outside when the incident occurred heard the news as it spread through the queue.
He wrote: It was Valentines Day and I was living in the gallery for the duration of the event.
More Shia LaBeouf stories
We were separated for five days, no communication. So it really hurt her as well, as I guess the news of it travelled through the line.
When she came in she asked for an explanation, and I couldnt speak, so we both sat with this unexplained trauma silently. It was painful.

The East Aurora house where Irving Price lived when he co-founded the Fisher-Price toy company during the Depression is for sale for $250,000.
After a summer of frustration when he was told that he could not tear down the gutted Victorian house for a parking lot, the owner put the house and its Main Street neighbor (for $200,000) on the market.
Gene Wachala was stymied by East Auroras decision in June to designate the old houses as historic landmarks, which meant he wasnt allowed to tear them down as he had hoped.
Instead, a new owner will have to rehab the empty houses, at 259 and 253 Main, which dont even have kitchens.
Its virtually building a new house inside that outer skin, said Wachala, owner of Pasquales restaurant across the street. Whoever does it, I think, is going to be in the business of remodeling because theyre going to eat a lot of the costs themselves, I would think. Hopefully, someone will come along.
Wachala bought the houses at auction last year, intending to replace them with a parking lot for his restaurant as well as a new building that would have combined commercial storefronts at street level with upstairs apartments.
But at a meeting earlier this year, the century-old houses drew a small crowd of advocates who spoke passionately to the Village Board about preserving Main Streets old-fashioned character.
Local landmark status, which the houses now have, prevents their demolition without village approval.
The people of East Aurora at the public hearing spoke loud and clear about their views, said Mark W. Warren, chairman of the Historic Preservation Commission. It was overwhelming.
It is common for old buildings to deteriorate and need lots of work, he said. His examples of once-forlorn historic properties revamped into something newly appreciated include the Darwin Martin House, Graycliff, the Erie Canal Commercial Slip, the Hotel @ The Lafayette, the grain elevators and the Roycroft Campus.

Medium-density living: Heller Street Apartments by Six Degrees.
Like Margaret and David without the bickering, Simon Knott and Stuart Harrison set out to do for architecture what Pomeranz and Stratton did for cinema.
"They were a real role model," says Knott, one half of 3RRR's weekly program, The Architects. "The relaxed way they do it, the odd argument, but clearly having a good time doing it. The guiding principle for us has always been that it would appeal to architects and the lay person."
For the past 10 years the two young architects (they were later joined by Christine Phillips and Rory Hyde) have broadcast the voluntary radio show. In its first year it won the Australian Institute of Architects' architecture in the media award.
Clever design: Andrew Maynard's Hill house.
Their infectious enthusiasm and insider knowledge led to guest appearances on ABC TV arts programs. Meanwhile, like Pomeranz and Stratton, the team got to broadcast from Venice when they represented Australia at the Venice Architecture biennale, hosting a "pirate" radio show. The pair are nothing if not passionate about architecture.

"There's never been a show where I didn't feel invigorated as I walked out the door," says Knott. "One of the greatest things about the program is we got to meet every architect in Melbourne, and some international heroes," Knott says. He cites Toyo Ito and David Adjaye as particularly memorable.
Now, like the At the Movies stars, the architects are retiring their show, in their case to focus on their young families and their maturing day jobs.

In the architectural design process there are three stages - schematic, development and documentation.
Prior to the digital revolution, architects spent the preliminary part of the design process using pen or pencil to sketch on paper, translating design concepts from the designer's mind into 2D or 3D images that could be easily understood by the architect himself or by others. Physical or mock-up models also helped.
With computer technology, architects began to develop designs and create construction documents, but the schematic design process was not really computerised.
By the 1960s, however, computer-aided design (CAD) began to take shape as a new line of research that was quickly applied to the architectural practice. By the 1970s, CAD programs began to be commercially produced and sold.
In the 1980s, while personal computers began to develop, Autodesk Co was established, with made-for-PC programs such as AutoCAD Release 1 coming to the market.
Design, both architectural and engineering, began to be computer-aided. However, the early generations of CAD programs remained largely drafting tools on PCs, as they were developed by engineers and researchers who were not designers themselves. They did not have much understanding of the minds and working process of architects. Architects needed not only an aid for architectural drafting, but also for architectural design.
In 1999, a group of researchers, both architects and software developers, began to search for an alternative program that catered better to architects' needs than CAD. A company called @last Software was established and designers' hand-sketching and design processes were studied to develop a sketching/designing program. In August 2000, SketchUp was born.
With full understanding of architects' needs and work methodology, SketchUp is an easy-to-use program that works on quick 2D sketches that can be projected into 3D form very quickly. The award-winning program caught on and now is widely used.
In 2006 it was sold to Google, which turned it into what we now know as Google SketchUp. It is now very easy to design, create forms and exchange information about these forms over the Internet. With free use for the basic-level program, Google SketchUp is commonly used by not just architects and designers.
As it was based on AutoCAD, SketchUp's interface is fairly similar, with the same set of basic functions, command icons, and form-creating, manipulating and rendering commands. These commands are not complex, with just enough options to generate various forms, with many styles of effects. Those already familiar with AutoCAD can easily learn to use SketchUp.
