Behind space heating, water heating consumes the most energy in our homes, according to Energy.gov. Yet as thermostats get smarter, water heaters remain relatively dumb, beyond some tankless innovations.
A Kickstarter campaign from Sunnovations wants to get in on the smart home game and lower your utility bill all at once. Aquanta is a retrofittable water heater controller that learns homeowners water usage patterns via sensors that measure energy going into the tank, as well as the energy it takes to heat the shower, run the dishwasher, and all the other household tasks requiring hot water. Once your Aquanta figures out you bathe every morning at 7:00, it sync its water-heating to that schedule.
A Wi-Fi-connected control box displays data on a dashboard, which is where you can control your water heater. An app sends maintenance alerts if the device detects a leak and also lets users turn off the water heater when theyll be away from home for a while.
Related: This crowdfunded water heater will annihilate your utility bill
Because the device is retrofittable, it should work with the water heater thats already in your home, provided its not tankless or over 120-gallon capacity. Those with a knack for DIY or handy around the house may be able to install the Aquanta themselves, but a plumber can definitely help the clueless.
Right now, Kickstarter backers can get an Aquanta for the early-bird price of $79, though the quantity is limited.

A local white fringe tree planted along the bike path is now famous as the first documented non-ash tree host of an invasive beetle that was thought to only prey upon ashes.
Also famous is the local ecologist who made the discovery thanks to perseverance and a little luck.
After scouring the village, Wright State University biology professor Don Cipollini, who lives in town, first saw the telltale signs of an emerald ash borer infestation in a white fringe tree planted along the bike path on Corry Street this summer.
Last month Cipollinis lucky discovery of a dead adult male beetle in a log of the same tree led the U.S. Department of Agriculture to officially confirm the white fringe tree as a host. Previously, it was thought that the emerald ash borer could only reproduce in and kill ash trees.
Who would have thought that whats off of the bike trail in Yellow Springs could change possibly federal policy? Cipollini said in a recent interview.
Cipollinis revelation, soon to be published in the Journal of Economic Entomology, has alarmed everyone from nursery owners to entomologists to policymakers. Not only might the white fringe tree be driven to extinction in Ohio where the native species is already threatened, but the spread of the emerald ash borer into warmer southern climes, where white fringe trees are more common in the wild, means the invasive beetle will bring even more devastation as it marches south.
The implications of Cipollinis discovery are profound. The white fringe tree, which grows wild along the Ohio River and is becoming a popular ornamental elsewhere in Ohio, may soon become quarantined by the federal government, effectively removing it from the nursery trade. His finding also opens the door to the potential that other species related to the ash, such as wild and cultivated olive trees, may be under threat from the emerald ash borer.
While some scientists are holding out hope that Cipollinis findings are an anomaly (even though he has found evidence of white fringe tree infestation elsewhere in the Dayton and Cincinnati area), most are responding with a mixture of fear and dread.
Everything we think we knew about the emerald ash borer may not be right, Cipollini said. This finding changes our view of what emerald ash borer can do. Now people are thinking Whats next?
Native to Asia, the emerald ash borer was unknown in this country until 2002, when it was discovered killing trees in southeastern Michigan and Windsor, Ontario.

On the concrete walkway next to the River Walk, just below Main Plaza and San Fernando Cathedral, sits a vibrant yellow compass rose that marks the centermost point of the city.
The mosaic tile is, quite literally, at the heart of San Antonio. Commissioned by the San Antonio River Foundation, the $50,000 art installation is one of several public works done by talented teenagers with a knack for the arts.
The amateur artists are part of Blue Star Contemporary Art Museums MOSAIC program, a free and selective after-school program for high school students with an artistic gift. The program blends mentorship with real-world application and allows students to design public art projects, coordinate exhibitions of their work, prepare portfolios for gallery proposals, and gain teaching experience by leading community workshops and hands-on activities.
Our mission is to inspire creative genius, and (with MOSAIC) theres so many avenues where you can do that and pursue that, said Elizabeth Lyons, public affairs and engagement manager at Blue Star Contemporary Art Museum.
MOSAIC, an acronym for Mosaic of Student Artists in Community, is led by artist-in-residence Alex Rubio, a renowned muralist who mentors students after school five days a week from a cozy studio in the Blue Star Arts Complex. Rubio taps into lower-income school districts with below-average graduation rates to recruit talented artists who have few opportunities to build their portfolios without the support of a nonprofit organization.
To me, there are creative communities everywhere. My mission is to identify the emerging, undiscovered talent in these communities, Rubio said. This program offers students inspiration and discipline to where they can graduate with an impressive portfolio and have an opportunity to apply for scholarships.
Despite the odds, all of the programs alumni have gone on to graduate from high school, and several are pursuing art degrees at prestigious schools such as Connecticut College and the Art Institute of Chicago.
This years class of 15 students is building their portfolios through an intensive study of new media, including printmaking, ceramics, drawing and painting. The artists also sell some of their work through exhibitions and learn how to build both frames and canvases to ensure their work is properly installed.
Their current project is a large-scale public art piece commissioned for HemisFair Park as part of the citys downtown redevelopment efforts. Rubio said the mural an abstract painting of curvy and linear designs in blue and green hues thats 40 feet wide and 9 feet high will be unveiled this spring.
The student-artists are responsible for the full life cycle of the mosaic project, from the initial concept and research to design and implementation.

SALISBURY, Md. - Officials are crediting a residential sprinkler system with saving a Salisbury home.
The Maryland State Fire Marshal's Office says around 12:50 PM on Wednesday, a Salisbury man walked into his Woodbrooke Drive home, and found that the sprinklers and smoke alarms inside his townhouse had activated. The resident called 911, and ten firefighters with the Salisbury Fire Department responded, and found the remnants of the fire in a corner of the living room.
An investigation reported showed that an electrical fire in the HVAC system cause a power surge, lighting the low voltage thermostat mounted on the wall, on fire. The sprinkler system turned on, and kept the flames contained to the living room. The rest of the home, and it's contents, weren't damaged.
Maintenance personnel is now working to repair, and clean-up after the incident. Damages were estimated to total $5,000. No injuries were reported.
State Fire Marshal Brian S. Geraci stated, "Residential fire sprinklers are proven to save lives, prevent injuries and protect property and valuables. This is yet another example of how the presence of a residential fire sprinkler system protected occupants and prevented substantial fire damage to residential property."
