Security firm BitDefender has announced a new type of home Intrusion Prevention System (IPS) device designed to make up for the inadequacies complement the capabilities of security software built into broadband routers.
Called Box and due for launch in the US in January (no news on a UK or European launch so far), the device is being pitched as a defence against everything from Internet of Things (IoT) attacks to todays botnets, phishing, data theft and everyday malware, all security layers normally sold only to businesses.
Physically, Box contains the same platform as any contemporary router, including a single-core 400MHz MIPS processor, 64MB or RAM, 16GB of onboard Flash storage and a pair of Ethernet ports. It also has 802.11nWi-Fi support and can stream up to 150Mbps, relatively modest but then again it doesnt have to be used in place of the customers current Wi-Fi router.
This is fundamentally about security connected to BitDefenders own cloud services. It is less a case of what it can do than what it cant do BitDefenders note on the device mentioned almost every security possibility imaginable.
It will block malicious URLs and other malware including downloads, and it reportedly will coordinate its security with applications running on the protected devices be they PCs, Macs or Android devices.
More interestingly, this layer means that it can be used to set up a VPN connection when users travel away from home, protecting them against man-in-the-middle attacks.
It will also handle things like vulnerability alerting and OS updates and even anti-theft.
The hardware sits next to, or in place of your router and protects all devices that have an IP address (think Nest, tablets, smart TV, etc.) yes, it will even protect your webcam from Russian hackers, read the PR pitch.
So Bit Defenders Box is going to have its work cut out for it but to stand all this up the user has to buy a $99 annual subscription (after year one) in addition to the $199 asking price.
All of this will be monitored through a smartphone app of course.

Quite a few of us have spent sleepless nights waging war with our burglar alarm as it deafens our ears with its exploding noise in the middle of the night.
More than often its a false alarm theres something wrong with the battery or maybe the controllers malfunctioning, resulting in stress and worry and a street full of annoyed neighbours.
And no one knows this better than Dan Conlon, whos had a fair share of burglar alarm problems and decided it was time to build his own home security system known as Cocoonthats currently being crowd-funded on Indiegogo.
The alarm that came with my first house never recovered from the night I had to borrow a ladder to silence (by that I mean, destroy) the confused external siren when the controller when awry, says Conlon.
And my troubled relationship with security systems continued at my first business (Donhost). We won a court case against ADT after they failed to provide the contracted police notification service when our ADT alarm went off.
Which is why Conlon decided to take matters into his own hands and build Cocoon a security system that allowed the owner to have complete control over the device and was easy to use.
I wanted a security product I wouldnt have to set or have installed that would alert someone who cares when something real happens, says the 32-year-old Leeds-based inventor.

BIG's concept includes a lawn between the Smithsonians historic Castle and Independence Avenue that curls upward at its corners.
To interest donors in a plan that includes HVAC upgrades and the repositioning of loading docks, it helps to throw in a few dramatic flourishes. Thats the lesson of the Smithsonian Institutions new master plan, made public today in Washington, D.C., by the Institutions secretary, Wayne Clough, and his architect of choice, Bjarke Ingels, of the Copenhagen- and New York-based Bjarke Ingels Group.
Much of the plan, which will take decades and at least $2 billion to implement (and is dependent on a mix of public and private funds), involves invisible infrastructure improvements, which, Clough said, are hard to get people to write checks for. You have to show them the big concept. That big, or BIG, concept includes a lawn between the Smithsonians historic Castle and Independence Avenue that curls upward at its corners.
The canted lawn is certainly photogenicit resembles a lawn proposed by Ingels for Brooklyn Bridge Park, as well as the lawn at Lincoln Center created by Diller Scofidio + Renfro as part of a $1 billion renovation of that complex (a close analogue to the Smithsonian project, involving improvement to the visitor experience and replacement of aging mechanicals).
Luckily, the peeled-up lawn is more than a gimmick. Two of the Smithsonians unitsthe Arthur M. Sackler Gallery (devoted to Asian Art) and the National Museum of African Artare nearly invisible, parts of a vast subterranean complex that are now entered through what appear to be gazebos. The new lawn, with its corner entry pavilions and strip of windows linking them, will make the two museums easier to see and enter.
The Smithsonian already has an overall master plan, but it believed its South Mall campus, along Independence Ave. SW, from 7th to 12th Streetthat is, from the Freer Gallery of Art to the Hirshhorn Museumneeded special attention. In 2013 it announced it had settled on BIG, which is working with the San Francisco-based landscape architecture firm Surfacedesign Inc. The process, guided by Clough, took on new urgency in 2011, when an earthquake rocked Washington. Clough, a civil engineer, was in his office in the Castle at the time. As seismic forces ground up century-old mortar, his office, he remembers, filled with dust. One expensive component of the master plan is a seismic upgrade, which will consist of base isolationessentially putting the Castle on a tray, so if another earthquake hits, the building wont even know its happening, Clough said. Digging for the tray will permit the creation of new underground facilities, including an auditorium, education spaces, and cafeteria. Above ground, flanking the canted lawn, Ingels promised both restoration of the romantic, meandering paths and more intuitive links between the buildings.
At the Hirshhorn, a plan by Diller Scofidio + Renfro for a balloon-like conference space inside the donut was shelved last year, and Ingels proposal for that building, designed by Gordon Bunshaft, is modest: It calls for taking down the wall that separates the building from the Mall, and tweaking the courtyard with a new fountain and ramp. It also calls for the creation of underground spaces for contemporary sculptures too big for the existing galleries. But, oddly, the plan largely sidesteps the Smithsonians Arts and Industries building, a handsome masonry structure adjacent to the Castle. That building was recently renovated, but is unoccupied; Clough said Congress will have to decide what to do with it. But critics of government waste are likely to wonder: why build new facilities when a prominent building sits empty?

Richard Yap and Kris Aquino portray a couple in the actor's "Promise Ain't Enough" music video. Star Music/Screengrab
MANILA - Kris Aquino will appear in two Metro Manila Film Festival (MMFF) entries this year, the actress-host revealed on Thursday.
Aside from the horror film "Feng Shui," which she top-bills with Coco Martin, Aquino said she will play a role in the other Star Cinema offering "The Amazing Praybeyt Benjamin."
The latter stars Vice Ganda, Richard Yap, Alex Gonzaga, and Aquino's son Bimby. Wenn Deramas, who is behind the original "Praybeyt Benjamin" in 2011, returns as director.
Aquino announced her part in the movie during the live episode of "Aquino & Abunda Tonight," where she and co-host Boy Abunda interviewed Yap.
"I'm your wife there!" she told Yap, who will play a general in the film.
"I'm the mom of Bimb. We had an affair. Inakit ko siya (Yap). Inakit ko 'yung heneral! Nagtagumpay ako and I'm bad. Ang saya!" Aquino said, laughing.
Aquino and Yap previously worked together in the music video of the actor's revival of Hall & Oates' "Promise Ain't Enough."
"The Amazing Praybeyt Benjamin" and "Feng Shui" will compete against six other movies in the main section of the MMFF -- "Shake, Rattle & Roll XV," "Kubot: The Aswang Chronicles 2," "Bonifacio," "English Only, Please," "Magnum Muslim .357," and "My Big Bossing."
