McDonalds next to Greystones schools opposed

    - November 24, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Greystones residents are set for another clash with fast food outlet McDonalds over the location of a proposed drive-through for the town.

Last year a planning application from McDonalds Restaurants of Ireland for a 368sq m restaurant and drive-through with a 59sq m enclosed yard in Blacklion, to be located beside three local schools, was approved by Wicklow County Council.

The development was turned down by An Bord Pleanla, which cited design issues and the proper planning and development of Blacklion.

Now McDonalds Restaurants of Ireland has come back with a revised proposal incorporating a cafe, fitness studio and an expanded drive-through restaurant that, taken together, amount to some three times the size of the rejected proposal.

The development, located beside the Blacklion shopping centre, is served by a road running from a junction on the Greystones to Bray Road.

Also opening from this road and located opposite the proposed McDonalds are three schools. Two of these, a Gaelscoil and an Educate Together school, are primary schools, while the third, a second-level school, is currently under construction.

Competing views on the suitability of the site for a McDonalds given the proximity of the schools have been expressed on Facebook, with some suggesting there could be as many as 80 jobs involved in the development.

However, a number of politicians and parents of children attending the schools are opposed to the development. Local councillor Tom Fortune said nobody would argue against the jobs element but the location of the schools and McDonalds should not be together.

Attempts to contact McDonalds Restaurants of Ireland were not successful.

DEAR TIM: Im just starting to get into building and remodeling as a do-it-yourselfer. Now that Im using a tape measure, Im having some difficulty. Perhaps I should have paid more attention in math class. Can you tell me about the markings on tape measures, what they mean and about all the special markings? Also, every tape measure I have and see in the store seems to be defective. The hook on the end is loose on all the tapes. What other tips do you have about using tape measures? Craig S.,Billings

Also, every tape measure I have and see in the store seems to be defective. The hook on the end is loose on all the tapes. What other tips do you have about using tape measures? Craig S.,Billings

DEAR CRAIG: Ive got some sobering news for you. As you delve deeper into building and remodeling, youre going to really regret not paying more attention in all your math classes, especially geometry. But if you have the passion to build and remodel, youll get up on the math learning curve veryfast.

In the past few years, Ive seen more improvements in tape measures than Id seen in the previous 35! Its hard to believe you could improve a tape measure, but a few companies have really done an amazingjob.

Most tape measures have black lines perpendicular to the edge of the tape measure in between each of the inch markings. These lines are different lengths to help you differentiate betweenthem.

The longest of these black lines indicates the half-inchmark.

The next-longest lines on the edge are the quarter-inch markings. The longer half-inch mark overlaps one of these three markings between each of the primary inch marks. If you count the quarter-inch markings, including the half-inch mark, youll count four between each inch mark. Thus, these markings divide 1 inch of length into four equal parts, each one-quarter inchlong.

Home improvements: What to consider before fitting bi-fold patio doors

    - November 24, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Bi-fold patio doors, which have become increasingly popular in recent years, are a fantastic way of blending your outdoor and indoor space. We take a look at what to consider before having them installed.

Email this article to a friend

To send a link to this page you must be logged in.

If youre choosing bi-fold doors, you need to choose big.

Unlike French windows and sliding patio doors, bi-fold doors consist of three or more doors that fold back on themselves and sit flat against one or both walls, depending if they open in the middle or at the side.

Theres no way around it, they look at their most spectacular spanning a whole wall, or even walls, and when the weathers nice, you can fold them back to open up the most stunning entertaining space.

The cost of the doors will vary, depending on the size of the opening, whether the doors are a standard size or made to measure, and what theyre made of (typically wood, UPVC or aluminium). Companies that make bespoke bi-fold doors often install them and provide a guarantee, giving you convenience and peace of mind.

    GLTHS Painting students finish well

    - November 24, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

TYNGSBORO -- Juniors and seniors in the Painting and Design program at Greater Lowell Technical High School had a chance to highlight their painting and artistic talents as guests of the Northeast Chapter of the Painting and Decorating Contractors of America, a national organization of professional paint and wall-covering contractors.

The 17th annual Students' Faux Finish Competition was held at the PDCA's annual Conference and Trade Show, a three-day event in Springfield.

Painting and Design students from several vocational high schools displayed their work to be judged by a panel of professional painters and faux-finishing experts.

Greater Lowell Tech was well-represented at the competition in such categories as marble/polished stone, wood graining, wall glazing, textured/decorative plaster, and mixed techniques.

Ribbons were awarded to junior Kimberly Egan of Dracut, third place in Marbleizing/Polished Stone; senior Monica Coupal of Dracut, third place in Mixed Techniques; and juniors Rachel Hunt and Rachana Teng, both of Lowell, tied for third place in Wall Glazing.

Rounding out the list was a sweep of the Wood Graining category, with junior Jamie Overoye of Lowell taking first, senior Katelyn Fournier of Tyngsboro second and junior Victoria Gibbs third.
