US health providers expand their Ebola precautions

    - November 24, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

By David B. Caruso, The Associated Press

NEW YORK - Public hospitals in New York City are so concerned about Ebola, they've secretly been sending actors with mock symptoms into emergency rooms to test how well the triage staffs identify and isolate possible cases.

A small Ohio hospital has hung up signs imploring patients to let nurses know immediately if they have travelled recently to West Africa.

And across the U.S., one of the nation's largest ambulance companies has put together step-by-step instructions for wrapping the interior of a rig with plastic sheeting.

There hasn't been a single confirmed case of an Ebola infection happening on U.S. soil; the case confirmed in Dallas involves a man who, like several health care workers treated in the U.S., contracted the virus in Liberia. But health care providers are worried enough to take a wide variety of precautions.

It isn't yet clear whether these preparations are overkill, or not nearly enough.

But health care experts say that at the very least, the scare is providing a chance to reinforce and test infection control procedures.

"The attention has been, in a sad way, very helpful," said Dr. Richard Wenzel, an epidemiologist at Virginia Commonwealth University and a former president of the International Society for Infectious Diseases.

Even small hospitals far from international travel hubs should be reviewing protocols and screening questions, and potentially buying protective equipment such as face masks and protective suits, he said. This will help them avoid repeating the mistakes of Dallas, where a Liberian man with Ebola symptoms was sent away despite telling a hospital staffer he had travelled from Africa, and potentially infected many others before he was readmitted two days later.

"The debacle in Texas should stimulate improved awareness and responses," Wenzel said.

Decks cleared for Zias trial on graft charges

    - November 24, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Bangladeshs Supreme Court on Monday rejected appeals by main opposition leader and former prime minister Khaleda Zia, clearing the way for her trial on graft charges which could see her jailed for life if found guilty.

The Appellate Division of the Supreme Court rejected her leave to appeal petitions...now there is no legal barrier in trying her on corruption charges, Deputy Attorney General Ekramul Haque Tutul told reporters.

A five-member bench headed by Chief Justice M Muzammel Hossain delivered the order upholding a previous identical decision by the High Court, saying she must face trial in the lower court on the graft charges over the orphanage, which was named after her slain husband ex-president Ziaur Rahman.

Tutul said the court also resumed hearing another appeal filed by Zia against a High Court ruling that validated her indictment by the lower court in a separate corruption case involving Zia Charitable Trust, a philanthropic organisation.

The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC), which brought the charges against the 69-year-old two-time premier, however, said both the charities existed only in papers.

The ACC in 2009 filed the Zia Orphanage Trust graft case against her on charge of embezzling a huge amount of money by forming a fake trust and filed the other case in 2011 on charge of abusing power during setting up the trust.

Her elder son and BNPs senior vice president Tarique Rahman and seven others were also accused in the two cases.

Ms. Zia and three of her aides are accused of drawing off about USD 400,000 from the Zia Charitable Trust.

She is also accused of leading a group of five people, including her eldest son, in embezzling USD 277,000 which were meant to go to an orphanage set up in memory of her husband, a military ruler turned politician who was assassinated in 1981.

Lawyers said Ms. Zia and other accused could be jailed for life if found guilty.

Lansing bar scene includes church service

    - November 24, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

But the tables had Bibles next to the beers and popcorn, and Kevin Brown, a pastor at Crossroads Church, was sitting behind a keyboard on the stage.

"We hope you didn't bring any of those non-Christian people tonight," he said to the dozen members of the audience. "Tonight is about getting all the kinks out."

The next hour would be a trial run, preparation and practice for how an evangelical congregation might do services without prayers or hymns or altar calls.

Because The Loft is on the second floor of a building on Michigan Avenue, Crossroads is calling the project The Upper Room. Because they want people to come whose relationship with church is tenuous or non-existent, the pastors have promised to buy a drink for every first-timer.

The drink is a gesture of friendship, said Noah Filipiak, the 31-year-old founder of Crossroads.

"We think it communicates something to people that are very leery of church and very leery of the church being very judgmental about things," he said.

Two summers ago, Filipiak spent a three-month sabbatical from his small downtown congregation playing safety for the Capital City Stealth, Lansing's minor league football team. He invited other players to come to Sunday morning services.

"I feel like our church is 'cool,' you know," he said. "We serve coffee and pie, and we're laid back and you don't have to dress up, and the things that Christians normally think, 'Oh people who don't go to church will come because we do these things.'"

Only the people he invited mostly didn't come and, when they did, they mostly didn't come back. It got him thinking about one of the perennial questions for pastors and church planters: What was it about church, even a casual church with pie, that kept them away?

"There are concentric circles of people," he said. "I think that your blue jeans and coffee and rock and roll band on Sunday morning church plant is reaching a certain concentric circle, and that demographic has now been pretty saturated."
