Closing time: The hotel beverage room is slowly disappearing from the rural landscape

    - November 23, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Phil Hossack / Winnipeg Free Press The Elma Hotel and Beverage Room has been closed and for sale for years. It remains padlocked along Highway 15.

NOTRE DAME DE LOURDES -- Angelo Mondragon remembers growing up hanging around picket lines in California with his mom and dad, who were union organizers.

His dad worked along side Cesar Chavez, the migrant farm worker who founded the Farm Workers Union in the United States, and who became that country's most famous Latino American civil rights leader.

Mondragon, as a child, would accompany his dad to Chavez's house, and was taken along on union rallies. "I didn't understand what these marches were about. I basically grew up in the (union) headquarters in southern California."

How Mondragon wound up in the heart of southern Manitoba owning a hotel beverage room -- and spearheading a drive to save small rural beverage rooms like his from vanishing off the landscape -- is another story. The small hotel bars scattered across the countryside have outlasted many a school, church and grain elevator, and are just as steeped in history, albeit a different kind. But the days for many of the small beverage rooms appears to be coming to an end.

"A friend of mine met a friend of hers," explained Mondragon, who is of Mexican descent, over a beer one afternoon in the Notre Dame Hotel.

His friend met a woman from Notre Dame de Lourdes, about 110 kilometres southwest of Winnipeg, who was visiting California, and they ended up marrying. Mondragon flew in from California for the wedding -- that was 10 years ago -- and met the bride's friend. A long-distance relationship ensued. He and Tina Bourdeaud'hui married seven years ago. They tried living in California but Tina, who is a physiotherapist, missed home. They returned five years ago. "How do you decide where to live? She's the boss," replied Mondragon, who is 37.

In Santa Cruz, his early attempts at a career ranged from police officer trainee to stock broker. In Notre Dame, he embraced that rural ethic of wearing several hats. He worked in a pig barn, drove a combine for a couple summers, sold wind turbines, and, most recently, worked for Manitoba Hydro.

The couple have two children with a third on the way, and live on an acreage outside town. "What we have here we could never have in California," Mondragon said.

Under Construction: Mediterranean fare with Southern twist comes to Chattanooga's Southside

    - November 23, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Steve Waters, left, and Bruce Stewart use a table saw at Bella Vita.

    Project: Bella Vita Restaurant

Location: 1400 Cowart St., Chattanooga (formerly Nikos Southside Grill)

    Owner: Tammie Taylor

    Size: About 12,000 square feet

    Contractor: Holderfield Development Corp., Knoxville

History: Southside Grill was the buildings original tenant. Nick and Amy Kyriakidis, operators of the Acropolis Grill, bought the property in 2007 and renamed the restaurant Nikos Southside Grill. They operated it successfully until Nick Kyriakidis, who cooked at Nikos, suffered a spinal injury and had to scale back his involvement. Nikos closed Dec. 22, 2012, after helping the Southsides growth and renaissance. Restaurateurs Mike and Taylor Monen bought the property with plans for a ground-level restaurant and office space up top. The property is now owned by Cowart LLC., a group of Chattanooga investors with restaurant experience.

Scope: Bella Vita will feature Mediterranean fare with a Southern twist and a full bar area with TVs. Live performances, produced by an entertainment group out of Nashville, will be held on the second story on select nights of the week.

Schedule: Bella Vita is expected to open sometime in mid-December

Coal Centers High Point restaurant for sale as owners ease into retirement

    - November 23, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Bob Sepesy gazed out the windows of his High Point Restaurant and Lounge, overlooking the Monongahela River, the Washington County borough of Newell and California University of Pennsylvania.

If Norman Rockwell lived here, this is what he would have painted, he said.

The Coal Center restaurant's dining room, bar and deck all look out over what many visitors call a million dollar view.

Now that view, and eight acres of property, including the business, is for sale.

Sepesy, 69, and his wife, Loretta, 67, who reside in California, are easing into retirement.

A few months ago the couple listed the property for $1.5 million.

We aren't closing. I enjoy it. I love this place. I'm sad. I'm happy to move on with my life. I still have the passion. I don't have the energy, he said, laughing.

Sepesy defies his own proclamation, taking visitors on a tour and greeting arriving employees and guests. In his spare time, he pilots his own plane and shoots aerial photography.

He and his brother, Joe, operated Sepesy's Tavern in California from 1967 until 1984, taking over a business their father owned since 1948.

I always had my eye on High Point, he said.

Violi's restaurant located next to Hunter Golf Club in Meriden, Thursday, November 6, 2014. Repair work continues after a fire occurred there on June 3. City officials are hopeful the restaurant will be fully operational for the next golfing season. | Dave Zajac / Record-Journal

MERIDEN Though the rebuilding process at Violis Restaurant has been slow while the city and insurance company negotiate a settlement, city officials are hopeful the restaurant will be open by the start of the next golf season.

Business has been limping along after a June 3 arson fire ripped through the outside of the restaurant and into the attic. Violis has been selling hot dogs, hamburgers and sandwiches in a snack stand.

The restaurant is in a city-owned clubhouse at the Hunter Golf Club on Westfield Road. A survey by a structural engineer revealed that there was very little evidence of fire damage ... within the interior of the building, but rather extensive damage to the wood roof-support beams.

City Fire Marshal Steve Trella ruled that the blaze was intentionally set.

City Manager Lawrence J. Kendzior said about three-quarters of the support beams are damaged and need to be replaced, along with a portion of the roof. The heating, ventilating and air-conditioning units, as well as some of the electrical units, also need replacing.

The city manager estimated it will cost more than $1 million to repair the building. He said that the citys insurance company is estimating closer to $850,000.
