Window washer falls from high-rise onto car

    - November 22, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

A worker fell screaming 11 stories from the roof of a bank building onto a moving car, crushing its roof and sending shattered glass flying into the street.

The man suffered critical injuries, but he was conscious, police said.

The car's driver, Mohammad Alcozai, was not injured. He told KGO-TV that he's happy to be alive especially after his car's roof almost completely collapsed in the accident. He said he is praying that the worker survives.

"I'm very happy that I wasn't hurt," Alcozai told the news channel shortly after the accident. "Hopefully he can make it. I pray for him that he can make it."

Alcozai said he saw something hit his car shortly after making a left turn.

Witnesses described seeing a blue streak and the man's shadow as he fell and then hearing shattering glass as he hit the car and then rolled onto the ground. The roof of the car, a green Toyota Camry, was smashed in, and the rear windshield shattered.

Bianca Bahman, who was on the corner where the man fell, said she looked up to see his shadow and ran for cover.

"As he was coming down, he was definitely screaming," Bahman, 31, a pre-medical student at San Francisco State University who was on her way to the gym, said. "It all happened so quickly. It was so instantaneous."

The man, identified by police only as window washer, was moving equipment on the roof of a bank building in the heart of San Francisco's financial district and not on a window-washing platform when he fell, San Francisco police Sergeant Danielle Newman said. The platform was on the ground at the side of the building, and cables were hanging from its sides. It was not clear whether the man was setting the platform up, but he was working with a partner, police said.

Sam Hartwell, 56, of San Rafael, said he was walking to the building the man fell from for a meeting when he saw something blue falling.

SF window washer, motorist both survive brush with death

    - November 22, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

    SAN FRANCISCO (KGO) --

The window washer fell from the roof and landed on a Toyota Camry. All but the driver's area was caved in. The driver, Mohammad Al Cozai, narrowly escaped being critically injured.

"As soon as I made my left turn, then I saw something hit my car very hard. The impact was really hard. I didn't know what it is," said Mohammad Al Cozai of Dublin.

After landing on the car, the window washer fell onto the street. Witnesses ran to help.

Witness describes San Francisco window washer's fall

"I am a pre-med student, I said go get towels right now. He was unconscious and he is bleeding from the ears," said witness Bianca Bahman.

Cal/OSHA spokeswoman Julia Bernstein said the man suffered a broken arm and injuries to his side.

"I took off my jacket, I put it over him and I just started to direct traffic. I don't know anything about medical, so I did what I could," said witness Jess Cathcart.

The thud of the body onto the car and the shattering of the glass was what was, I guess shocking," said witness Sam Hartwell.

The man, an employee of Redwood City-based Century Window Cleaning. The federal Occupational Safety and Health Administration cited the company for safety violations four times in 2008, including one serious violation that resulted in a $6,740 penalty, according to the agency's website. The case was eventually settled, and the penalty was reduced to $2,720, Bernstein said.

    Water wonders: World's best fountains

This floating tap can be found on the Spanish island of Menorca. The thick jet of water conceals the support and water pipes of the installation, making it appear to float in midair. The Dubai Fountain sits in front of the Burj Khalifa and features five rings of jets that can shoot water 50 stories high. The world's tallest indoor fountain, which receives up to 20,000 visitors a day, can be found inside a Lotte Department Store in Busan, South Korea. A water spout at the apex of a skull symbolizes birth, rebirth, wisdom and community at the Turning Heads Fountain in Walnut Creek, California.

Whimsical attraction damaged tree, city says

    - November 22, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

There will be no poetic licence for a Wortley Village woman who hoped to bring joy to her neighbourhood by posting poetry on a young maple at the foot of her front lawn.

Christine Montgomerys Poet Tree adorned with a display case for the poems had been there two weeks when she returned home to find it empty.

The sheet of paper with A Silly Poem by Spike Milligan was left in her mailbox, Please remove from city tree, scrawled across the bottom.

Im so disappointed. Everybody who walked by would stop and read, said Montgomery, a librarian.

How can you not love it? she asked. Im only putting poems up to make people happy. Theyre not deep poems. I want to bring poetry to the people.

But a city forestry supervisor who has given Montgomery until next week to take her frame down says she must find another way to accomplish her mission.

You cant nail or fix anything to a tree, said Andy Beaton, with transportation and roadside operations. Shes damaged the tree. Shes put screws into the trunk of a tree.

The citys boulevard tree protection bylaw bans cutting down, defacing, trimming, pruning, destroying or injuring any tree on a boulevard.

I understand what shes doing with the poetry, but I just cant have it affixed to the tree, Beaton said. Trees are coming to the forefront in London.

Last summer, a city hall committee voted to spend $37.7 million to boost Londons tree canopy to 34% over the next 20 years.

Paroled Muskegon County murderer Timothy Spytma speaks; hearing transcript sheds light on his release

    - November 22, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

MUSKEGON, MI A transcript of the commutation hearing for Timothy Jon Spytmasheds light on the state's decision to free Spytma from a life sentence nearly 40 years after he participated in the brutal murder of Phyllis Doctor one of the most notorious crimes in Muskegon County history.

Spytma, now 55, was freed on a four-year parole July 22. He lives in the Ann Arbor area and reports to the parole office there.

Spytma declined a detailed interview for this story but said in a brief telephone conversation Nov. 20 that he's doing well four months after release. "I work, I go to school. Doing A-OK. My (parole) oversight fees are paid through the year. I report to my agent twice a month. Urine drop, Breathalyzer, everything is A-OK with me and my agent."

Penelope Ryder, Sptyma's friend and advocate since the 1980s, said he works 10 hours a week with the American Friends Service Committee, a Quaker-affiliated social-justice organization, and attends classes at Washtenaw County Community College. "He is doing beautifully," Ryder said.

According to the 210-page transcript of Spytma's May 1 public commutation hearing, obtained by MLive Muskegon Chronicle through the Freedom of Information Act, a dozen witnesses testified in support of Spytma's release. They vouched for what they called his good character in recent decades, saying Spytma had matured and reformed during his decades in prison and could be released safely.

Arguing against freedom were an assistant Michigan attorney general and the chief trial attorney for the Muskegon County Prosecutor's Office, citing the brutality of the crime, misconduct reports from earlier in Spytma's prison career, and what they considered his minimizing of his role in the murder. The prosecutor also read letters opposing release from the victim's son, daughter and the son's wife.

The hearing also included Spytma's own account of his and Michael Saxton's actions on Dec. 16, 1974, the day the teens brutally murdered the 42-year-old Doctor, Spytma's next-door neighbor.

The hearing was held in front of Michigan Parole Board member Sonia Amos Warchock at the G. Robert Cotton Correctional Facility in Jackson. Warchock later presented a transcript of the hearing to the state's full 10-member parole board for a decision.

    The upshot was Spytma's release.

He had been serving a parolable life sentence on an adult conviction of second-degree murder.
