LOYOLA and Tomenio: Fiery memories made vivid by court ruling
MANILA, PhilippinesThe inward-swinging doors were supposed to be good feng shui to keep the money flowing in, thats why the owners had them built that way.
Nelson Tomenio and Gerald Loyola were referring to the main entrance of the now infamous Ozone Disco on Timog Avenue, Quezon City, which burned down while packed with partying customers on March 18, 1996. The inferno killed 162 peoplesouls who were trapped inside because of the doorsand left 93 injured.
This and other grim memories rose back to surface for the two men following the recent Sandiganbayan ruling that slapped a 10-year prison term on nine peopleseven city government personnel and two company executivesheld responsible for the tragedy.
After surviving the worst nightclub fire in history, Tomenio and Loyola, along with three other Ozone survivors, were later given jobs at City Hall under then Mayor Ismael Mathay. Both currently report to the Social Services Development Department.
They have since moved on with their second lives, but they still have the burn scars on their arms, hands and back, along with the chilling flashbacks.
As a former employee of the club, I really pin the blame on the owners. It would not have happened if they were not remiss in their responsibilities, said Loyola, 45, who worked as a waiter at Ozone.
For money to come in
Loyola said the clubs swing-in doors, the main the reason why the panicked patrons were trapped, were installed that way because the owners thought it to be good feng shui: It would bring the money in.
But if our city officials did their duty and had it checked, there would not have been a tragedy. There was corruption there, Loyola said.

ELKHART, Ind.--- A man driving a Jeep in Elkhart Co. veered off the road, crashed through two fences and landed in a tree, narrowly missing two homes just feet from the crash site.
The accident happened in the 23000 block of Forest Ln. at 9:39 p.m.
Police report says the driver, 27-year-old William Montgomery was taken to Elkhart General Hospital for non-life threatening injuries. He had a cut on his nose, and a cut on his head.
Montgomery was incarcerated for Operating While Intoxicated.
Both nearby homeowners and their families were home at the time of the incident. None were injured.
Homeowner Elena Martin and her family were in their beds when they heard the crash.
"He went between the trees and then he hit my fence and then he went flying about ten yards and then he landed on my trampoline and in my back yard and through my neighbor's fence and into a tree," Martin said.
She said this is not the first time a car has veered off the road at this particular intersection. Residents said they are hoping the latest crash will prompt the county to put in new signage of traffic lights.

BATAVIA Demolition began this week on the Master Cast building at 106 S. Mallory Ave., which was heavily damaged in a March 5 fire.
Batavia Mayor Jeff Schielke was happy to see the demolition begin, since the building has been in a tenuous condition since the fire. Master Cast, which supplies permanent mold aluminum castings for the fast food industry, was at the southeast corner of Mallory Avenue and First Street.
Batavia firefighters were not able to determine what caused the fire. Batavia Deputy Fire Chief Randy Banker had said firefighters knew where it started and what was going on in the area but werent able to scientifically determine the exact cause of the ignition point.
There are no plans for the site once the building is totally demolished. However, city officials are exploring the idea of creating a tax increment financing district to improve the West Town area.
The West Town area is centered at the intersection of Main Street and Mallory Avenue, and extends about two blocks north and south. Once a municipality creates a TIF, its property assessment is frozen and new or increased taxes generated by improvements are used to pay for additional improvements or other development incentives.
City officials recently held a meeting to hear from residents and property owners in the citys West Town area on what their vision is for the neighborhood, and to present the citys possible plans for the area.
William Guerin, George Wondriska and Sam Casanas founded Master Cast in 1969, according to the companys website. Guerin bought out Wondriska and Casanas in the 1970s and today the company is run by his sons Brian and Tim.
Brian Guerin said the company will be opening soon in its new building in Sugar Grove.
We really wanted to stay in Batavia, but there was no place to go that suited our needs, he said.

Pine Needle Bike Festival organizer Mike Horn, city parks manager Alissa Baker and Coun. Don Cody are seen at a recently built retaining wall at the northern section of Little Red River Park.
It might look like a run-of-the-mill retaining wall, but the new structure at Little Red River Park ensures success for the local skate skiing community.
During a Friday press conference, the city and Pine Needle Bike Festival organizer Mike Horn announced the retaining walls completion, shoring one of the parks northern trails from tumbling down an embankment.
The $41,700 project cost was pared down by a $6,000 donation from the Pine Needle Festival -- an annual event that gives back to the community every year.
Little Red River Park is an ideal beneficiary, Horn said, noting that the summer event is held at the park every year.
Although the provincially funded Pehonan Parkway Reserve funded the basic structure, added funding from the Pine Needle Bike Festival helped widen the northern river trail to accommodate more user groups.
Since this wall needed to be replaced, it was a good opportunity to also widen the trail and enhance he usability of the trail and encourage more people to come out and use the park, city parks manager Alissa Baker noted.
Specifically, the widened trail will benefit the skate cross-country ski crowd, which has become the majority in recent years over the traditional trail-based cross-country skiiers.
