Sheriff: Two Arrested for Stealing Packages from Front Doors

    - November 22, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

The holiday season is off to a rocky start for some people over in Rankin County.

Two would-be thieves are accused of stealing packages straight from the front porches of homes.

It happened on the Tuesday in the Patrick Farms neighborhood in Pearl.

A FedEx driver called authorities after he spotted a vehicle following his truck from house to house.

Pearl police arrested 25-year-old Jimmy Lee Davis Jr. and a femalejuvenile, but it didn't end there.

Rankin County Sheriff Bryan Bailey tells WJTV, stolen goods from a house burglary were also found in the suspects' vehicle.

The case was then turned over to the sheriff's office because the stolen goods were from a house burglary in the county.

"A pretty lowdown dirty way to steal from somebody," says Sheriff Bailey.

It sounds like a modern day Grinch, following trucks that deliver mail only to pluck the packages from a person's front porch.

"From looking from a criminal standpoint it's a pretty smart thing you could get all kinds of stuff I guess if you just follow the FedEx truck," says Sheriff Bailey.

    Homebuilding declines slightly in October

    - November 22, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

WASHINGTON Construction of new homes fell slightly in October after a big September surge, but weakness was largely driven by the volatile apartment sector.

Builders started construction at a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 1.009 million last month, the Commerce Department reported Wednesday. That was a drop of 2.8 percent from September, when construction had jumped 7.8 percent to 1.038 million.

The weakness stemmed from a 15.4 percent plunge in apartment construction, a category that tends to have big swings from month to month. Construction of single-family homes was up 4.2 percent, the third gain in the past four months.

Applications for building permits, a good sign of future activity, rose 4.8 percent in October to 1.08 million.

Although overall construction was down in October, analysts said the weakness was confined to apartment building, which had seen a huge increase in September. They noted upward revisions to overall activity in September and August and forecast further gains in the months ahead.

The improving trend should continue, supported by generally low rates ... and strong job growth, said Jennifer Lee, senior economist at BMO Capital Markets.

Showing strength in October was the South, which posted a 10.1 percent jump on construction starts. All other regions of the country recorded declines. Construction fell 18.5 percent in the Midwest, 16.4 percent in the Northeast and 10.9 percent in the West.

Solid employment gains, lower mortgage rates and easier lending standards are likely to boost housing in coming months. At the same time, economists are concerned about price gains, which have been outpacing wage increases.

Price increases have cut into affordability for would-be buyers, limiting sales growth for new homes and cutting into sales for existing homes.

But in an encouraging sign, U.S. homebuilders confidence rebounded in November as both sales expectations and buyer traffic improved. The National Association of Home Builders/Wells Fargo index rose to 58 this month, up from 54 in October.

Architects of Aldi's UK success are separated as German grocer gets British-based chief executive

Aldi pals:Roman Heini, left, and Matthew Barnes

The architects of Aldis success in the UK are being separated.

Joint managing directors Roman Heini and Matthew Barnes have worked hand in glove since 2010 to grow the German discounter into a significant threat to the established grocers.

But in a surprise move Aldi said German born Heini will return to his homeland to become chairman of the advisory board for the entire group.

Barnes will become chief executive of Aldi UK and Ireland a new post and the firm will hire two joint UK managing directors.

The changes will take place in March next year and come just after Heini borrowed 1.9million interest-free from his employer in 2012 to buy himself a mansion in the Warwickshire countryside.

The pair send their children to the same schools, their wives socialise together, and the families hang out at weekends.

Historic Lynchburg Home Being Restored After Wall Collapse

    - November 22, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Lynchburg, VA- They were forced out of their home earlier this year when the entire side of the house collapsed. Now, after help from the community their historic Lynchburg home is being put back together, stronger than ever.

Larry Taylor Restoration is building back the historic Garland Hill home piece by piece. Seeing the work Larry Taylor has done on the weathered home may make you think he's a gift sent from above, but he'll just tell you he's doing his job.

It's a joy for me because this is what I do," said Taylor.

Taylor says this hasn't been an easy feat though. In fact, he says other contractors didn't want to go near the job.

It was a mess. It was a big hole. Just a big hole, debris piled up all out here," said Taylor.

The remnants of that mess are still lying in piles around the house to remind Taylor and his crew of all the hard work they've done, and still have left to do. Cracks line the walls that came down in the collapse. And an incomplete second floor doesn't leave much room for privacy.

Taylor's not alone in the venture though. The homeowner's employer, Don Banker of Banker Steel, has donated several items toward the restoration.

His heart is towards his employees. They take care of him and he takes care of them," said Taylor.

Now the nearly 200 year-old home that was condemned, is being built back with steel, concrete and hopes that it will last 200 more years.

Everything is bolted in. That thing's built like a Sherman tank now," said Taylor.
