DEMOLITION work at Holy Trinity and St Matthews Church in Ronkswood, Worcester, has gathered pace.
Just four days since the Bishop of Worcester swung a sledgehammer to begin the flattening process, contractors have reduced the churchs hall to a gigantic pile of rubble.
Industrial diggers were used to pull down the building and will shortly be turned on the main body of the church known as The Drum.
The project marks the start of a new chapter for the site, with a purpose-built, multi-use building for the congregation and community planned for the future.
Brian Coley, church warden, said: It has been sad to see the demolition going on and there have been a lot of different emotions.
But we knew the building had out-lived its purpose and it had become a millstone around our necks.
We are looking forward to a new, self-sustaining and happy future.
Mr Coley added the contractors were getting on with the demolition positively and the work, which had not hit any problems, should be completed by Friday, December 12.
He also reassured the public that the war memorial was safely protected by fencing.
The demolition project has been undertaken after the church was declared at the end of its useful and sustainable working life in December 2012, forcing the congregation to worship at temporary venues including a pub and school.

Municipal authorities pulling down unathorised structures at Children's Park Road in Nellore on Friday. - PHOTO: K. RAVIKUMAR
Amid objections from property owners and some political parties, the Nellore Municipal Corporation (NMC) authorities are going ahead with the demolition of illegal structures in the arterial roads as per the 2012 master plan.
Several structures in the Childrens Park Road were pulled down on Friday, amid speculations that the traders and shop owners lobby may stop the demolition drive anytime. The drive at Childrens Park Road took everybody by surprise even as the opposition leaders were demanding exemption to the arterial roads from demolition. Childrens Park Road is very wide and there is no need to put traders into inconvenience in the name of demolition. Alternative steps should be taken for this, said former MLA and Congress leader Anam Vivekananda Reddy. He wanted the Trunk Road to be exempted as such a step would deprive nearly 5,000 families of their livelihood sources. Nearly 400 shops would come under the impact of demolition and around a thousand traders families would be pushed into troubles, he said.
As per the Hyderabad Municipal Corporation Act 1955, which is applicable to all municipal corporations, there should be transparency in demolition for road widening. The demolition should be taken up only after carrying out land acquisition and taking adequate measures for rehabilitation of the victims.
The argument put forward by some opposition leaders was that the master plan could be implemented for development of interior colonies like MG Nagar and Sundarayya Nagar. The arterial roads like Trunk Road from Sabari Srirama Kshetram to Atmakur Road should be left untouched.
Making a novel suggestion, Mr. Vivekananda Reddy asked the officials to consider shifting the RTC bus stand from Trunk Road to RTO office area where government land is available. Another alternative would be to introduce one-way traffic in the lanes and main roads in the city so that the problem of heavy traffic would be resolved , said Mr. Reddy.
A section of traders and political parties have sent delegations to meet the top leaders in the State and at the Centre.

Offices and buildings at Santa Susana site will be dismantled
DESERTEDA NASA service building in Area II of the Santa Susana Field Laboratory, which contains mostly office space, is one of a few structures scheduled for demolition this month. MICHAEL COONS/Acorn Newspapers Beginning this month, NASA will demolish about 40 buildings at the Santa Susana Field Laboratory as part of its ongoing effort to clean up the former rocket engine testing site.
The first round of demolition will take place in Area II, which includes the service areas on the northern part of the site and the Delta test site, where large liquid propulsion systems were tested in the 1960s, according to Allen Elliott, SSFL program director.
The service areas include cafeterias, laser labs, office spaces, warehouses, auto shops and other places like that, which arent being used anymore, Elliott said. We wont be demolishing any (rocket engine) test stands though.
The demolition is the first step in cleaning up the field lab and, in some areas, is necessary to remediate the soil beneath some of the structures, Elliott said. The SSFL is no longer required to meet NASAs mission and, as such, the unoccupied buildings and obsolete test stands also arent needed.
Since 1947, the 2,850-acre SSFL has been used as a nuclear test site and for research in the development of ballistic missiles, rockets and space shuttle equipment.
Boeing Co. owns nearly 80 percent of the field lab, including Area IV, which suffered a partial nuclear meltdown in 1959. The federal government owns the remaining 20 percent, which includes all of Area II and part of Area I. Cleanup efforts at the site began in 2010, and NASA is overseeing cleanup on the federal governments portion.
NASA is one of three government agencies responsible for cleanup at the field lab, with the U.S. Department of Energy and the Department of Toxic Substances Control overseeing Boeings portion of the site.
Peter Zorba, SSFL project manager, said the demolition is a very complex process.
NASA isnt the only one doing demolition on the site, but were coordinating with the community and taking their concerns into account, he said, adding that NASA has held community meetings to give updates on the progress.

Clean-Slate Janitorial Services (http://www.Clean-Slate.ca), a Greater Toronto Area-based professional cleaning company that specializes in commercial office cleaning, retail maintenance, floor restoration, carpet cleaning, and construction site cleanup, is advising businesses to have their windows cleaned in preparation for the oncoming winter season.
As part of Clean-Slates office cleaning services in Woodbridge, it offers streak-free window cleaning, which is vital during the winter months. Due to its expertise, Clean-Slate advises that windows, both outside and inside of the office, need cleaning at this time of year, though for different reasons.
Windows outside the office are open to the snow and cold of the winter. Keeping those exterior windows clean is necessary so they dont become filled with mildew, which will cause them to appear visually unappealing and can actually affect the glass, says Sam Panousis, owner and operator of Clean-Slate Janitorial Services. Interior windows, meanwhile, are susceptible to all of the hands that are touching it and a buildup of dust from the office area.
Panousis explains that blinds play a major role in windows collecting dust and that they need to be cleaned just as frequently as the actual windows to maintain all-around cleanliness. Thats why blinds are a priority when cleaning interior windows, especially in the winter, when people tend to keep their blinds down to keep in as much warmth as possible.
In addition, its now expected that office cleaning companies, both in Woodbridge and throughout Canada, use environmentally friendly cleaning products for all office cleaning services, he adds. In these times, being environmentally responsible is key for any business.
We want to provide the best office cleaning services, not just in Woodbridge, but anywhere, all while avoiding damage to the environment, Panousis concludes. Thats why we have a large supply of eco-friendly products that we use on all of our jobs.
