A plumber has been acquitted of the manslaughter of a woman who died of carbon monoxide poisoning at a Cork Hotel following her cousins hen party.
Richard Davis (46) a heating and plumbing contractor of Serenity, Killanully, Ballygarvan, Co Cork, was charged with manslaughter over the death of Miriam Reidy (35) from Ballyhahill, Co Limerick, who was found dead in the Trident Hotel, Kinsale, on January 9th, 2011.
A Circuit Criminal Court jury found Mr Davis not guilty of manslaughter after deliberating for just over five hours.
Mr Davis, a director of Davis Heating and Plumbing Contractors Ltd, was also found not guilty of two charges under the Safety, Health and Welfare at Work Act (2005).
His company denied the same two charges relating to the conversion of a hotel boiler on January 4th, 2011. Mr Davis was found not guilty on all five counts.
The Reidy family said they were extremely disappointed with the outcome of the case.
Speaking on behalf of the Reidy family, Siobhan Barret, said her sisters death had left a huge void in the family.
Its been a very long and difficult journey for us, the Reidy family since January 9th, 2011. Were extremely disappointed with the outcome today.

A heating and plumbingcontractor has been found not guiltyof the manslaughter of a woman who died from carbon monoxide poisoning.
46-year-old Richard Davis of Ballygarvan in Co Cork was also acquitted of two charges under the Safety,Health andWelfare at Work Act.
The company he was a director of - Davis Heating and Plumbing Contractors - was also acquitted.
Miriam Reidy was found dead, and her sister Patricia in a distressed condition, in a room of the Trident Hotel in Kinsale in January 2011.
MsReidy, a bank official from Ballyhahillin CoLimerick, died from carbon monoxide poisoning.
Throughout the three-week trial, MrDavisdenied all the charges. His companyalso pleaded not guilty to two similar charges under the act.
After deliberating for more than fivehours, the jury of ninemen and threewomen returned a majority verdict of not guilty on all fivecounts.
Speaking afterwards, a solicitor on behalf of Mr Davis said he did notwant to make any formal statement out of respect to the lateMsReidy and her family.
The State had argued that while MrDavis did not set out to harm anyone, he had been grossly negligent in the conversion of a new boiler from natural gas to liquid petroleum gas, and had left it spewing out lethal quantities of carbon monoxide gas.
He had failed, they argued, to convert it correctly, to follow manufacturer's instructions, and to carry out a safety test with a meter when he finished the job.

I was on St. Simons Island last week scarfing down massive amounts of corn-fried shrimp at the exquisite little Georgia Sea Grill when someone came to the table to inquire if Junior E. Lee had finished his analysis of the recent election. That really puffed Junior up when I told him that.
Part of his delay was due to time he spent treating Arveen Ridleys bull, Lou Gene, who had ticks in his nose and therefore was not interested in a bunch of cows trying to woo him into the pasture for some boy-girl stuff. I asked Junior how that all went. He said it went well and that when he left Arveens place, there were a lot of cows giggling and winking at each other and Lou Gene was leaning against a fence post trying to catch his breath.
Back to the analysis, Junior said that in his opinion the most positive thing that Georgias Democrats can take from the elections is they only have two more years to endure Barack Obama, who makes Jimmy Carter look like George Washington. I told Junior I thought that was a little strong. Junior said Malathion is strong. This is fact.
Was he surprised that both incumbent Gov. Nathan Deal and Republican U.S. Senate candidate David Perdue won so handily after all the talk by pollsters about how close their races were going to be? Junior said I know about as much about polling as I do about sheep dip fungicide. Junior and his pest control analogies.
Junior said polling firms do that kind of thing so candidates will commission more polls and pollsters can make more money before they disappear until the next election cycle. He says pollsters are like cicadas who are here for a short time and then gone; particularly those pollsters who have no other skill sets to fall back on like the pest control profession. While cicadas stay underground for 17 years, pollsters show up every election cycle. Junior says that is why he prefers cicadas. You dont see them as much and they arent as noisy.
Junior says now that the elections are over, I should have a lot of column material with liberal weenies whining and making excuses and right-wing wingnuts convinced that moderate Republicans are a bigger menace to society than left-wing Democrats and who will probably self-implode before the cicadas return.

Toronto does not have a rat problem.
The spectre was raised last week when a pest control company reported that an army of rats fleeing construction at Union Station was invading downtown homes and businesses.
The company, which does not service Union Station, made its declaration after receiving a lot more calls from area residents and business owners.
But TTC spokesman Brad Ross said the agency hasnt noticed any more rats than usual, and the citys pest control contractor, Orkin, actually reported a slight decrease in the number of rats around Union Station, said city spokeswoman Tammy Robbinson.
Toronto is a big city packed with people, garbage and food, but apart from a few high-profile restaurant closures and rat-infested homes, residents have little to fear from their rodent neighbours, city officials say.
Even squirrel bites are more common than rat bites, said George Matsumura, head of the citys rabies control program.
Matsumura said he could probably count on one hand the number of rat bites weve had since he started in the public health department in 1978.
Even if all of those rat attacks had happened in 2013, a person would still be more than twice as likely to be struck by lightning that year than bitten by a rat.
Toronto Public Health tracks dog, cat and raccoon bites and scratches, but not rats. Theyre almost non-existent, Matsumura said, and are counted in the same category as mice and gerbil attacks: other.
Its rare to see people enjoying a sunny day in High Park or Trinity-Bellwoods while throwing scraps of bread to rats, Matsumura noted, which is how most squirrel bites occur.

DENVER A website that claims to check out contractors for you is at the center of a FOX31 Denver investigation.
HomeAdvisors website claims to prescreen contractors, but Investigative reporter Heidi Hemmat uncovered major gaps in the companys screening process that could give consumers a false sense of security.
HomeAdvisor claims to do the work for you by making sure the service providers on their website have passed background checks, are licensed and have good reviews. But, dozens of consumers claim HomeAdvisor has cost them thousands of dollars.
Nate Wright is a highly rated painter on HomeAdvisors website, even though hes accused of taking a large deposit from one of his customers and disappearing. Find resources about how to find licensed contractors below.
Hemmat asked Wright, Did you take her $1,300 for work that you never did? Wright said, No. I did it all. Wright told us hes done nothing wrong. His alleged victim does not want to be identified. She says, My home is an eye sore. And he left me with a mess.
The Denver metro area woman said Wright required $1,300 of the $1,800 job in cash up front.
The woman claims he started painting her home and never finished. She said, I feel like I was duped. Im upset. Its stressful.
The alleged victim said she thought she had hired a painter she could trust because she found Wright and his company Wright Painting on HomeAdvisors website. The site, HomeAdvisor.com, claims to screen and approve all of the service providers on their site by requiring that they pass criminal and financial background checks. HomeAdvisor says it also verified professional licenses and customer reviews
The woman filed a formal complaint sending HomeAdvisor pictures, Wrights three-line handwritten contract and copies of the cash advance she used to pay him.
The HomeAdvisor complaint department suggested she pay Wright the rest of the contract. She said, They pressed me and pressed me to pay the last $500 when nothing had been done on my house.
