Storm cleanup, tree removal continues in Arlington

    - November 19, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

    JACKSONVILLE, Fla.

Cleanup is now in full swing in one Arlington neighborhood where the most powerful part of the storm roared through.

Now that temperatures are beginning to plunge, many are figuring out ways to stay warm.

Some homes still have holes in their roofs, like one on Weller Avenue. Thankfully, it fell over the garage without impacting the main part of the house.

Homeowners on Tuesday were working to get rid of debris, cutting down branches that were left dangling by the storm.

These two beautiful live hickories, there really was no reason for them to fall over because they weren't dead, said homeowner Rebecca Grenet.

Latest News Headlines from Action News

But the storm was so intense, it snapped the trees like twigs.

Our prayers were in fact answered because they all fell forward, Grenet said.

Her next door neighbor, Patrick Golonka, wasnt so lucky.

Ann Arbor hiring private contractors for $368K to catch up on tree maintenance

    - November 19, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

The city of Ann Arbor is hiring two private contractors as it looks to catch up on tree removal, tree pruning and stump removal needed along city streets.

The City Council voted unanimously Monday night to approve a $192,160 contract with Guardian Tree Experts and a $175,875 contract with the Asplundh Tree Expert Co.

The tree removal activities under both contracts focus on the highest-priority trees, those listed as priority 1 or 2 removals in the city's tree inventory.

Tree pruning activities will focus on removing large, dead, broken, hanging or diseased limbs for trees listed as priority 1 for pruning in the tree inventory.

The city has a backlog of 815 priority 1 and 2 tree removals. It's expected Guardian will tackle 253 and Asplundh will tackle 255, leaving a backlog of 307.

The city also has a backlog of 2,205 stumps that need to be removed. Guardian will tackle 79 and Asplundh will tackle 255, leaving a backlog of 1,871.

The work is to be completed by May 31.

In addition to helping to address the tree maintenance backlog, the work to be completed moves the city toward implementing recommendation No. 1 of the city's new Urban and Community Forest Management Plan, which is to implement a proactive routine maintenance program, said Kerry Gray, head of the forestry department.

Gray's memo to council notes the work also furthers the "healthy ecosystem" and "sustainable systems" goals of the city's Sustainability Framework.

The city has about 6,900 trees in mowed areas in parks and more than 41,000 trees along city streets that it's responsible for maintaining, and it's putting an extra $1 million into doing that this year after falling behind on tree maintenance.

Artists take commissions to fund own work

    - November 19, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

By ALICE T. CARTER Pittsburgh Tribune-Review

PITTSBURGH (AP) - When Lynn Epstein and Craig Otto set out to renovate the kitchen in their Bellevue home, they wanted a different look for the tile backsplash behind the stove.

They began by checking out the usual suspects "big-box home-improvement stores, as well as boutiques that sold ceramic tile" without finding what they wanted.

"We saw a lot of gorgeous tiles, but you end up seeing the same things everywhere," Epstein says.

It wasn't until they attended a gallery show of Stevo (Steve) Sadvary's mosaic art that inspiration struck.

"He was experimenting with a different look and we thought, 'Hmmmm, that would transfer nicely,' " Epstein says.

They commissioned Sadvary to create a one-of-a-kind piece tailored to their space and taste.

The idea of commissioning art sounds like an activity for wealthy people or international corporations. It conjures up images of ancestral oil paintings hung over the fireplace or a serious sculpture that's the focal point of a large garden.

Artists are happy to do that.

But they also can be commissioned for smaller or more commonplace projects, such as designing an ornate stair rail, a garden bench or the ceramic tile surround for a shower stall.

Hiking Arizonas Gabe Zimmerman trail, named in honor of the slain public servant

    - November 19, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

DAVIDSON CANYON, Ariz. The bike rack at the Gabe Zimmerman Trailhead here is a twisted oxidized metal coil molded to look like a rattlesnake. Its a small bit of whimsy amid a majestic part of the 800-plus mile Arizona Trail dedicated to the victims of a dark chapter in the Grand Canyon States history.

That would be the Jan. 8, 2011, shooting at the Casas Adobes Safeway in Tucson, where Zimmerman and five others were killed, and 13 others were injured, including Zimmermans boss, then-Rep. Gabrielle Giffords and her congressional successor, Ron Barber.

A sculpted tile-work monument of Zimmerman stands at the trailheads entrance. This portion of the path was a favorite for Zimmerman, who was an avid outdoorsman. The monument also shows a side of the legislative staffer different than the one dedicated to him thousands of miles away in the Capitol Visitor Center.

Public servants, the best of them anyway, live a double life. Its a necessity that comes from serving not just ones community, but the broader national interest. The best tend well to the peoples business in the nations capital while staying rooted back home.

Zimmermans ability to work effectively in both worlds is highlighted by the memorials to him in D.C. and Arizona.

Capitol Hill pays tribute to Zimmerman each time someone books HVC-215, the Capitol Visitor Center meeting room dedicated in his memory on April 16, 2013. It is a space where the peoples business is conducted, a room like countless others in the CVC. But looking over it is the presence of Giffords community outreach director, who was killed while performing his duties coordinating and overseeing the ill-fated Congress on Your Corner event nearly four years ago.

Zimmermans community back home pays tribute every time someone hikes, rides a bike or walks a dog along this stretch of the Arizona Trail southeast of Tucson. It is the northernmost marker for the Las Cienegas passage, a 13-mile, easy to moderate hike along the 800-plus mile trail that spans the state from Mexico to Utah.

The monument at the trailhead, dedicated in January 2012, bears an inscription explaining who its in memory of.

Gabe (1980-2011) loved Tucson its desert, its people and its unique spirit. A Tucson native, he hiked and mountain biked throughout the mountains and canyons that you see here. Gabe was a dedicated public servant who died serving the community he loved. He brought people together, encouraged us to respect one another and appreciated the place we call home. Gabe lived a life of exuberance. You should too. Enjoy this special area.

It is a memorial that is personal and expansive, a connection to the Sonoran Desert he called home, and it continues his outreach efforts.

Police department drying out after sprinkler bursts

    - November 19, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Loveland Fire Rescue Authority Lt. Bobby Bartlett, right, and facilities employee Melissa Ashland, left, try to move water out of a hallway Tuesday at the Loveland Police Department after water burst from a sprinkler in the K-9 storage area of the building. (Jenny Sparks / Loveland Reporter-Herald)

Firefighters responded to water bursting from a sprinkler Tuesday afternoon at the Loveland Police Department, 810 E. 10th St.

The water was coming from a sprinkler pipe in the K-9 storage room, a room used to store equipment and supplies for the dogs, which set off the fire alarm. Officers except for 911 dispatchers evacuated the building, while firefighters went in to contain the water and turn off the sprinkler system valve.

"Because the weather's warming up, this is pretty typical," Battalion Chief Jason Starck said, noting that it's most common in commercial retail stores.

Starck said his assumption is that the pipe froze and once the temperature started to rise into the 30s, the ice began to melt, which could have led to the sprinkler head bursting.

Firefighters checked and found no fires in the building, so they started to secure the water and locate the valves, which is more complicated than it sounds in a building as large as the Police and Courts building, Starck said. The valves aren't always in the same place as where the water is spraying.

The flow of water was about 70 gallons per minute, according to Starck. Lt. Jeremy Adent described it almost like a waterfall or downpour.

"Everything was just wet," he said.
