A frigid, 28-degree morning was not enough to stop a local veteran from helping another.
A OK Septic owner Tommy Stanfill, who served in Iraq and Afghanistan, crawled from underneath World War II veteran Wesley Hay Sr.s house Friday on East 14th street in Columbia.
Hay, 94, tried to fix several water leaks under his home earlier this year using Scotch tape. He has had several problems with people swindling money from him for promised work to his home.
Stanfill read a story about Hay in The Daily Herald and came into the office Wednesday and volunteered his time to fix the plumbing problems. He visited Hays home last week to assess the situation.
I just have a heart for it, Stanfill said about why he helped. I am a vet, too.
Hays home had several broken pipes that were leaking water, requiring at least three hours of work to fix, Stanfill said.
Its not that I felt sorry for him, but hes an older gentlemen. He isnt asking for help, and he is trying to do it on his own, Stanfill said. He is not out here asking for a handout. You can help people who want to help themselves and not feel bad about it.
Hay was shipped to Hawaii in 1942, after the Dec. 7, 1941, attack on Pearl Harbor. He served in the South Pacific from 1942-46 as a mechanic in the U.S. Armys 509th Ordnance Heavy Maintenance Company.
After leaving the service, he returned home to Tennessee and ran Hays Repair Shop in Columbia for about 40 years.
Joy overtook Hay when asked his feelings about getting help.

St. Helena homeowners and business owners can now make their properties more water and energy efficient through a property-tax based program already in effect throughout Napa County.
The HERO Property Assessed Clean Energy (PACE) Program allows residents to install new plumbing as well as heating and cooling systems, and pay off the costs through long-term property tax assessments.
St. Helena and American Canyon recently joined PACE, following the communities of Napa, Calistoga and Yountville. Napa County also is a member.
HERO will help American Canyon and St. Helena save water and energy and enable local homeowners to make immediate efficiency-improvements to their homes, Liza Gray, HERO Community Development Manager, said in a news release. Based on our experience in other communities, we also expect HERO to create local jobs by increasing demand for construction services.
Program participants can repay the assessments in as few as five years and as many as 20 years.
Interest is tax deductible.
HERO provides property owners with a variety of environmental and plumbing options to have installed. These range from high-efficiency toilets and faucets to drip irrigation systems to drought-tolerant landscaping.
More than 200 cities and counties in California have adopted HERO Programs representing about $375 million in financing.
Visit HEROProgram.com or call 855-HERO-411 for information.

ONGOING research investment in breeding higher yielding varieties that are better suited to processor and consumer needs is set to pay big dividends for South Australian durum growers.
Varietal development has long been seen as the key to uncapping the export potential of the durum industry, with grower groups and industry bodies investing heavily in research and development.
In 2009 former SA Durum Growers Association president John Green identified varietal improvement as the biggest single issue for durum growers, with ongoing improvements needed in the areas of agronomic performance and yield.
Five years on and current president Mark Hill says the commercial release later this year of a new variety with the potential to boost yields by up to 20 per cent, would be a major step forward for the durum sector.
Theres a new variety about to be released commercially in the 2015 growing season which has been performing exceptionally well as far as yields, screenings reductions and proteins, Mr Hill said.
It wont be a silver bullet but we are hoping for a 10 to 20 per cent yield improvement and a reduction in screenings, as well as maintenance of all of the agronomic and climate traits so that we can deliver into the top durum categories to maximise returns.
Durum varieties are tested nationally by Durum Breeding Australia, with the trials in South Australia conducted by South Australian Research and Development Institute (SARDI) with funding provided by the Grains Research and Development Corporation (GRDC).
According to the GRDC, domestic durum requirements are currently about 300,000 tonnes per year, but marketers would like a consistent supply of 1 million tonnes to tap into export demand, requiring a considerable expansion in area and/or productivity from average national production levels of 500,000t/year.
Mr Hill said varietal improvements would assist in productivity gains, but good agronomic practices were essential for growers to achieve the premiums traditionally up to $60/t higher than bread wheat prices which make the crop financially appealing.
We realise its a bit of a niche crop thats going to a specialist product and thats pasta production, he said.

Five stories that have North Texas talking: the debate over new textbooks in Texas classrooms continues, how schools are coping with demographic changes, four photojournalists recount the Kennedy assassination, and more.
The Texas State Board of Education will have a preliminary vote today over which history and social studies textbooks will make it to classrooms statewide.
The 15-member board has more than 100 textbooks to consider, the Associated Press reports. Some academics and activists have criticized the books for exaggerating biblical figures on American democracy and downplaying the human role in climate change. On the other hand, some conservative experts say the books are too politically correct and ignore connections between radical Islam and modern terrorism.
Others have objected to outdated terminology the textbooks use to describe other religions. Manpreet Singh told The Texas Tribune she found at least 40 errors in the way the books covered the Sikh religion, saying the description of the religion as a blend of Hinduism and Islam is absolutely false.
The board's 10 Republicans and five Democrats are expecting to hear more public testimony before they vote.

Punters enjoy the atmosphere at Riccarton Park Racecourse during NZ Cup Week.
Socialising during Cup and Show Week is vital to the racing industry, Canterbury Jockey Club chief executive Tim Mills says.
A 2012 economic impact report to Christchurch City Council estimated Cup and Show Week feeds $14.5 million into the Canterbury economy, including TAB racing turnover.
Last Saturday's New Zealand Cup Day at Riccarton contributed under 60 per cent of CJC's annual on-course revenue, Mills said. Much of that income was instead from club memberships, car parks, food and beverage and sponsorships.
Thoroughbred clubs like CJC only get 17 per cent of a betting dollar put through the TAB, so it was better for CJC to charge a flat ticket price than rely on the betting.
"If you're paying $80 to get your member's ticket, you've got to spend about $500 punting, for us to get the equivalent of $80," Mills said.
Cup Day on-course turnover was just over $1 million this year. This was similar to 2013 and more than the lightning-affected 2012, but down on the previous four-year average of $1.4 million.
Nationally, Cup Day is still one of the top two racing events, by reputation and on-course turnover, but increasingly racing clubs have to look beyond the horses for income.
"It's quite ironic because as the crowd has increased, the betting has sort of levelled off. And I think that's to do with the fact we're getting more of a social racing crowd as opposed to what you'd call the traditional racing or punting crowd," Mills said.
Riccarton Park sponsorship and marketing manager Chris Rowe said the CJC's Cup Day crowd of 18,000* was three times larger than any other Canterbury gallops meeting. The event caused vehicle jams at alcohol checkpoints near the entrances.
