Big blaze at Holy Cross Church destroys a beloved structure in San Jose

    - November 18, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

SAN JOSE -- Holy Cross Catholic Church, a century-old center of a beloved parish, where Mass was still recited in Italian, burned down Sunday afternoon in a four-alarm fire.

"This was home, and now it's gone," said Catherine Ventimiglia, who attended the Italian Mass that ended minutes before the fire broke out around 2 p.m. "We are stunned. My legs are numb from this."

San Jose Fire Department Capt. Mike Van Elgort said the cause of the fire was not known, but the blaze did spread rapidly through the second floor and then to the roof. More than 100 firefighting personnel were still struggling to control the blaze in the late afternoon. By then, the roof had collapsed and two minarets had tumbled.

"It's made of heavy timber, old construction methods and old dry wood," Van Elgort said. "It's a beautiful building. It's a tragedy to see it demolished."

However, the fire had spared the rectory and a meeting hall.

Hundreds of local residents and parishioners -- speaking in Italian, English or Spanish -- stood at the corner of Jackson and North 13th streets and watched their neighborhood and spiritual institution crumble before their eyes.

"I can't believe I'm not going to see my church again," said Debra Cancilla, who was baptized there in the 1950s. "You get to know people and where they sit every Sunday, for years and years. That's not going to happen anymore."

Holy Cross was founded in 1906 to serve working-class Italian immigrants settling in the Northside, one of San Jose's oldest neighborhoods. The church gained special recognition five years later as an Italian National Parish.

The newcomers that followed the Italians over the decades remained largely Catholic and working class, but they came from Portugal, Texas, the Philippines and Mexico. The waves of newcomers helped the church remain a Northside anchor.

5 things to know about the safety of your microwave

    - November 18, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

I use my microwave nearly every day, mostly for heating leftovers, rewarming my morning coffee and steaming vegetables. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, more than 90 per cent of American homes have the appliance, so I figured it was universally regarded as safe. I was taken by surprise when a recipe I posted online generated some passionate anti-microwave comments.

A quick Web search of microwave dangers brought up some startling claims and concerns. There are questions about radiation leakage, arguments that microwave cooking violently rips apart food molecules rendering them void of nutrients, and earnest warnings that ice crystals from microwaved water form a similar shape to those from water that was repeatedly exposed to the word Satan. (You just cant make this stuff up.)

Although the devil-water concept is a bit, um, far-fetched, some of the other claims cited seemingly sound sources, so I decided to investigate.

    1. How do microwaves work?

The microwave contains an electron tube called a magnetron, which produces electromagnetic radiation with a wavelength a little shorter (micro) than that of a normal radio wave. These waves cause the water molecules in food to vibrate, which ultimately produces the heat that cooks the food. Thats why ingredients with a high water content, such as vegetables, cook very quickly in a microwave.

Its a common myth that microwaves cook from the inside out. In fact their waves dont actually penetrate foods very well, which is why you get cold spots in thicker foods and need to let them rest after microwaving to allow the heat to disperse for even cooking.

    2. Do they emit radiation?

Microwaves do leak some radiation, but before you panic, read on. To put things in perspective, your laptop, cordless phone and cellphone all leak electromagnetic radiation, too.

The Food and Drug Administration has strict limits on the amount that can leak from a microwave oven throughout its lifetime, and it is far below the amount known to harm people. Part of the requirement is that the appliances are built with double interlock systems that stop the production of microwaves as soon as the latch is released.

The level of normal exposure also drops dramatically as you move away from the oven so, to be extra cautious, simply stand away from it while its on. Microwaves turn on and off like a light bulb: when they are off, no waves are emitted, and microwave energy cannot linger in the oven or in food.

Downtown hotel, East Liberty apartments on city planners agenda

    - November 18, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

City planners Tuesday will review details of a proposed $14 million boutique hotel Downtown and an 89-unit, $10.5 million apartment building in East Liberty.

Greenway Realty Holdings of New Jersey would build the hotel in an 11-story building at 424 Third Ave. that housed the Salvation Army. Greenway bought the building in March for $2.16 million. Its Distrikt Hotel would be the second of its kind; the first is in New York City.

Crews would renovate the interior and exterior of the 1920s building, removing all but historical features and upgrading the mechanical, electrical and plumbing systems. An addition is proposed, as is off-site parking for 68 vehicles.

Greenway wants to start construction in January and has a target opening date of April 2016.

In East Liberty, Walnut Capital Partners want to continue its apartment construction by building the Penn Highland Building, a six-story structure at the corner of Highland and Penn avenues.

Its nearby 117-unit Walnut on Highland apartments in the former Highland Building is fully leased, with a waiting list.

The structure would have five floors of apartments above first-floor retailers.

The proposal includes turning Antler Way, an alley that separates the two buildings, into a courtyard enclosed by a fence.

Marine floor specialist Durastic wins contract for North Sea oil platform

    - November 18, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Liverpool marine flooring manufacturer Durastic has won a supply-and-installation deal on a new North Sea platform

Durastic, which has branches in Liverpool, Jarrow and Southampton, UK, will supply and lay its seamless, fire-retardant underlay and flooring products in the cellar deck of a new platform under construction for BPs 4.5bn Clair Ridge oilfield near the Shetland islands.

The platform is being built by Hyundai Heavy Industries (HHI) in South Korea.

Installation staff from Durastic will travel from the UK to HHIs offshore yard near Ulsan on South Koreas south-east coast. The team will include a project manager, underlay and top-surfacing specialists.

Durastic manager David Sinclair, who has overseen the project, said: This latest work comes after a previous order with HHI to supply products for the Clair Ridge platforms main module.

This new deal will, again, showcase the quality and value-for-money of Durastic products, and the very best of our workmanship.

The benefits of Durastic underlays and coverings are that they are seamless, light weight, lay in one coating and clean.

Meticulously manufactured and tested, the durability of flooring ensures expensive, disruptive and time-consuming maintenance is kept to a minimum, providing terrific value for money.

Furthermore, the quality of Durastic products means they meet A60 fire-retardant safety and certification standards set by maritime organisations across the world including Lloyds of London, IMO and American Coastguard.

The North Sea platforms cellar deck will be laid with 528 sq metres of Durastic lightweight underlay. This light underlay is used as a screed to prepare steel decking surfaces for a final top flooring surface. (See Notes to Editors, 2)
