The Public Works Department on Friday submitted before the Madras High Court Bench here an exhaustive list of locations from where karuvelam (Prosopis juliflora) trees considered harmful to the ecology since they turn the land dry by sucking too much of groundwater besides poisoning it had been removed from river courses and waterbodies.
Additional Advocate General K. Chellapandian submitted the list before the First Bench comprising Chief Justice Sanjay Kishan Kaul and Justice V. Dhanapalan who were seized of a contempt of court application against the Chief Secretary, Environment and Forest Secretary, Public Works Department Secretary, Madurai Collector and Corporation Commissioner among others.
C. Anand Raj of Equal Right, a non-governmental organisation here, had filed the contempt application through his counsel R. Alagumani for alleged non-compliance of an order passed by a Division Bench of Justice R. Sudhakar and Justice V.M. Velumani on January 9 directing the officials to remove karuvelam trees from all waterbodies and river courses in the State.
After accepting the report filed by M. Muthupandian, Executive Engineer, Public Works Department (Periyar Vaigai Division), the First Bench gave a further period of four weeks to the officials to proceed with the work and file a progress report along with supporting photographs. The judges also directed the Registry to list the matter after a month for reporting compliance.
In his report, Mr. Muthupandian stated that karuvelam trees spread over an area of 4,51,600 square metres were removed in the financial year 2013-14 ever since the court passed orders in January. Trees spread over 2,40,000 square metres were removed from Vaigai river in Thenur and Kodimangalam areas, and trees covering around 1.52 lakh square metres were removed from a link canal near Vaigai dam. Also, trees spread over 41,38,834 square metres had been removed so far in the current year, he added.

Arborists Rob Calley and Travis Morales competed in the Florida Tree Climbing Championships (FTCC) on Oct. 25 at Meyers Park in Tallahassee, FL. This event, put on by The Florida Chapter of The International Society of Arboriculture, brings the best and brightest climbing arborists from around the state together to battle for one slot in the International Tree Climbing Championships (ITCC).
The events that Calley and Morales competed in were the throwline, aerial rescue, secured footlock, belayed speed climb and the work climb. Throwline tests the ability of a climber to set a climbing rope high in a tree. Aerial rescue puts the climber in a simulated emergency with an "injured climber" stuck in the tree. He must take charge of the scene, check for hazards, get EMS notified, ascend to the victim, and then bring him down safely. Secured footlock is a test of raw strength and technique as the climber ascends 50 feet by the footlock climbing method. Belayed speed climb is another all out effort to ring three bells located in a tree as fast as possible. The work climb is the premier event that tests a climbers ability to work five stations high in the canopy of a tree.
"This was one of the most challenging things I have ever done, both mentally and physically, said Calley. We didn't win this time, but we competed hard, made great friends who have a passion for climbing safety, and are training now to compete in Mobile, Alabama in March."

Roxanne Fleszar and Michel Appellis like to "keep a piece of history" around in their guest houses and in the various properties they own. Even the new house they built at 1414 Newton St. retains bits and pieces of its past.
"Our address plate is the transom from Newton Street Station, the men's guesthouse we bought in 2000 and used five years as an annex to our Travelers Palm Inn," Fleszar said of the stained glass window embedded with white numbers hanging next to the front door.
Eventually, all four Travelers Palm locations merged on Catherine Street, and in 2007 the Newton Street property was granted a change of use from commercial guesthouse to the couple's single-family residence.
"Architect Tom Kelly designed the new house around the old front section, which we think was originally built as one of Flagler's railroad community shacks," said Appellis. "It's the only part of the house that's wood."
Everything else behind the formal front porch, foyer and guest bedroom suite--almost 3,000 square feet--is poured concrete covered with stucco exterior.
A second front entry, which is set back 13 feet from the original porch, is the entrance to Fleszar's and Appellis' office suite. A courtyard between the two front doors offers another piece of house history: Its brick walkway is inlaid with a blue-and-gold tile that says "Newton Street Station."
"During the demolition of all the guesthouse add-ons, the contractor said there was no way we'd be able to save that tile, but there it is," said Appellis, who served many years on the board of the Old Island Restoration Foundation.
Salvaging the old tile was just one element of the exquisite attention to tile work throughout the couple's Caribbean contemporary house. For instance, a multitiled compass rose inset on the foyer's Travertine-tile floor makes as much of a detailed statement upon entry as the diagonal tiles laid on the living room's staircase landing make when going up or down.
Each of the house's four bathrooms and two half-baths boast equally precise craftsmanship: Pearlescent Italian-glass tiles in the office suite; in the owner's bedroom suite on the second floor the shower walls feature white tiles randomly inset with smaller squares cut from the same rust-flecked Italian glass flooring.
A sitting room upstairs doubles as Appellis art studio, where "I really wanted a utility sink in the bathroom" to casually wash up paint brushes and sculptural materials. But, he said, "my wife thought differently," and a classy vessel sink was installed atop a blue-granite vanity that is, today, no worse for the wear of cleanup from varying finishes Appellis has made and applied to pedestals he designs.

Some city officials are questioning the decision a former city building official made to waive a sprinkler system at a new local business.
Andre Messner, the citys new chief building official, said when he first noticed that The Big Biscuit, located at 139 N. Belt Highway, did not have a sprinkler system, he thought it was an oversight by the city and that an architect did not include them in the plans.

The demonstration featured two simulated burning buildings, one with a sprinkler system and the other without.
The sprinkler system is designed to start spraying water when the ceiling temperature reaches 160 degrees. When that happens, water begins to spray out at 13 gallons a minute.
"Having this will save your life. You will not die if you have one of these in your home when a fire breaks out," said Chief Melvin Martin.
The fire in the sprinkler home was completely put out in a matter of seconds, as for the home without, the fire destroyed everything.
Chief Martin says having one of these systems can cost you up to $1.50 per square foot in a newly built home.

Yoon C. Lee, a Samsung Electronics Co. (005930) executive, is giving a tour of his U.S. home in Oakland. He shows off his living room and foyer, then takes a look outside to check the garden. He considers turning on the sprinkler system before deciding the plants have enough water.
The thing is, hes not actually in California. Hes 8,000 miles away with a reporter in a Seoul conference room. Lee, a tall, 49-year-old, is at a huge table fiddling with a Galaxy S5 phone thats streaming live video from the U.S.
This is Samsungs next big bet as it works to build a future beyond mobile phones, where earnings are tumbling. Lee and his colleagues are trying to create another hit from whats known as the Internet of things, technology that stitches together phones, cameras, sprinklers and roads. If they succeed, the effort could propel sales of the companys electronics, appliances and chips for a generation; if they fail, the troubles will likely deepen.
Imagine if all the dumb things around you can be connected, said Lee. For Samsung, this is a big new opportunity, a huge paradigm shift. It will benefit us across all businesses.
Samsungs Internet push comes just as Apple Inc. (AAPL), Google Inc. and dozens of others are sizing up the same opportunity. Techs giants are all vying for leadership and collaborating where necessary. The market for the Internet of things is projected to hit $7.1 trillion by 2020, according to the research firm IDC.

An employee demonstrates using the air conditioner control function of the Samsung Smart Home system with a smartphone at the Samsung Innovation Museum, operated by Samsung Electronics Co., in Suwon, South Korea, on Nov. 5, 2014.
In a sign of how seriously Samsung is taking the effort, the company is transferring about 500 engineers from its mobile-phone division and allocating them largely to the Internet initiative, according to people familiar with the matter. The shift also reflects recognition that the Suwon, South Korea-based company needs another hit after smartphones, they said, asking not to be identified discussing internal matters.

Snowflakes arent the only particles that will be falling in Downtown Pittsburgh this Christmas.
A digital piece of artwork of a cascading waterfall of bright blues, pale yellows and shimmery particles will light up the outside of the Benedum Center on Penn Avenue until the end of December.
People walking along the sidewalk in front of the piece on Saturday night glanced up at it and its projector casually, but were more than likely unsure about the message behind it. Or unaware that at any given moment it could burst into orange and red flames.
Those colors come as a result of pollutants in the air.
While Pittsburgh has made great strides in cleaning up its air quality over the decades, it still falls behind many other American cities, said Phil Johnson, interim director of the Heinz Endowments Environment Program and director of the Breathe Project.
We have been improving every year, but we are in the last 10 percent to get [federal] standards; half the country reached [those] a decade ago, Mr. Johnson said.
Thats why, along with the Office of Public Art, Mr. Johnson and the Breathe Project decided to bring Particle Falls, which they first heard of through the Clean Air Council in Philadelphia, to Pittsburgh.
It was supported by a $62,500 grant from the Heinz Endowments.
Particle Falls, which debuted in San Jose in 2008, uses a device called a nephelometer, which measures the pollutant concentration levels in the air, and a computer program then interprets the data and reflects it at the wall. The idea behind the waterfall was to bring together urban and natural settings. You sort of think of maybe the sublime of things that are happening in our environment that can be very frightening, but can also be very beautiful, said Andrea Polli, the creator of the piece.
Mr. Johnson hopes the piece will help make people more aware of the air quality problems in the area, which have resulted in premature deaths and have caused respiratory and cardiac diseases and asthma.
