Q With winter approaching it does not seem logical, but I have read that fall is a good time to plant trees. Is that true?

A Fall is a good time for planting several things spring flowering bulbs and trees are among those plants that can be planted in the autumn.

Many nurseries have container-grown trees and shrubs that are often discounted in the autumn. They will have new plant material arriving in the spring and want to clear old planting stock so that they have room for the new material, and to avoid the necessity of maintaining it over the winter. Plants in containers are more subject to drying and freezing damage than plants in the ground, so they are better off planted in your landscape rather than waiting through the winter at the nursery.

Another reason for fall planting, even if you cannot get discounted plants, is the fact that many trees and shrubs from temperate climates produce new root growth in the autumn. This is because the upper portion of the tree received most of the food produced by leaves during the summer when the air was warm and metabolic activity was high in the upper portion of the plants. As the air cools in the autumn, the upper portion of the plants begins to go dormant and metabolic activity decreases. However, at this time the soil is still warm and metabolism continues in the roots. Metabolism draws food from the trunk and branches to the roots allowing growth at this time of year. Another advantage in New Mexico is that there is usually less wind in the fall than in the spring.

If trees are properly planted in the fall, they should be well established by spring and able to begin new leaf production better than if they were planted in the spring. After planting the trees, irrigation once or twice a month depending on precipitation and organic mulch will help assure successful establishment and growth of your new tree in the spring.

KINGSPORT The TSSAA's proposed changes to the state's football classifications was approved on Thursday and with it comes some significant change for area high schools.

More travel is the common denominator for most, but that is the price for trying to find a more competitive balance among schools.

Dobyns-Bennett and Science Hill will be grouped in a 6A conference with Bearden, Bradley Central, Hardin Valley, Jefferson County, Maryville and William Blount.

"We think this will provide us with an outstanding regular-season schedule," said D-B athletic director Cary Daniels. "We'll add Tennessee High, Oak Ridge and Sevier County as our out of conference games.

"Our only concern is how the TSSAA will handle the playoffs," added Daniels. "It appears that the first two rounds of the playoffs would require us to travel to Murfreesboro and that could prove to be very costly."

With more than 4,000 season ticket holders, Daniels feels Dobyns-Bennett can comfortably make this transition.

"We're so fortunate to have so many loyal and dedicated fans," said Daniels. "A lot of people think that the school systems give schools money for sports. We survive on gate revenue, it's our life blood."

Sullivan North has been moved to Class 2A with Cosby, Cumberland Gap, Gatlinburg-Pittman, Hampton, Happy Valley, North Greene and South Greene.

Ex-rep alleges 'Palace letters' responsible for excessive land clearing works

KUANTAN: A former state assemblyman claimed that letters purportedly issued from the Pahang palace have contributed to the proliferation of excessive land-clearing activities in Cameron Highlands.

Datuk Ho Yip Kap, who was the Tanah Rata representative from 2008 to 2013, said that during his tenure, very few of such letters were given out to aged farmers who wanted to earn a decent living by working on a small piece of land.

"Now, certain people who claimed to have connections to the palace are offering the letters for RM100,000 to RM300,000.

"Some greedy farmers took up the offer, resulting in massive and uncontrolled land-clearing activities.

"There are also some corrupt officers in the district office who give out the land-clearing permits discreetly," he said.

Due to this loophole, farmers and contractors would carry out land-clearing activities within 24 hours.

A source said RM20,000 would be collected from farmers for approval to clear one acre of land.

Ho said he had raised the matter at the state assembly, asking for a freeze on land-clearing permits and a ban on the use of heavy machinery in the highlands.

However, he said no concrete action was taken. Ho applauded former Cameron Highlands MP Datuk Seri S.K. Devamany for playing an active role and raising his concerns in Parliament in the past.
