Band pops up just West of Here

    - November 16, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Brotherhood its what ties the Adams family together, or more accurately, brotherhood, music and their faith in God.

The Adams brothers, Matt, Taylor and Tristan grew up in Alberta Beach playing music together at home and in church and look forward to the upcoming release of their first album, The Journey.

With a rock sound, the Adams Christian band, West of Here, penned more than 20 songs in preparation for their first album and after narrowing it down to half as many tracks, released their first single in October.

Theyre not all one certain style so you wont get bored going through the whole album, Matt said, describing the tracks as having a pop, rock and southern rock sound.

The whole album is somewhat akin to the journey of life.

    Hence the title.

And despite the bands relatively new radio play, West of Here received two 2014 Covenant Award nominations, which are presented annually as part of the GMA Canada Week.

With award nominations for Rock Song of the Year and Rock Album of the Year, West of Here headed to B.C. to take part in the 36th annual Covenant Award ceremony, held on Thursday, Nov. 13.

Were extremely excited... I think theyre happy to promote good new music, Matt said of the GMAs.

But getting this far hasnt been without its challenges, which have ranged from time management, funding and sourcing musicians that will support their sound, he said.

TxDOT says the worst is over at Loy Lake Bridge

    - November 16, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Theyre affectionately called the ski ramps two oddly designed points of ingress and egress on the north side of the Sherman Commons shopping center. And for retailers on both sides of Loy Lake Road bridge, the ski ramps are the final piece of the puzzle in restoring full functionality for drivers as ongoing construction at the location grinds on into its ninth month.

Right now, anybody north and south can get to (the Town Center) side, and you can go from the east side to the west side, but you cant go from the west side to the east side, JCPenny Store Manager Barger Tygart said. But Im pretty sure that before the Black Friday weekend, that it will be open to where cars can go back and forth.

Tygart was one of a hand full of Sherman business owners and managers who attended an informal, informational meeting hosted by the Texas Department of Transportation near the construction zone Friday morning. TxDOT was the bearer of good news for Tygart and others during the gathering, as the organization announced it hopes to reopen the ski ramps and reestablish the flow of traffic as early as next week.

We added an extra phase to (utilize) these old ramps to give temporary access during the holiday season to these developments over here, said TxDOT Area Engineer Aaron Bloom, speaking from a business in Sherman Commons. So were going to work the frontage road up to where the concrete ends, just right past the intersection, and then well keep working on Loy Lake, trying to get that built.

The ski ramps are being reopened thanks to a $52,000 change order financed by United Commercial Realty, the Dallas-based company that owns and leases Sherman Commons. The downside of the modification in construction plans, however, will be a slight lengthening of the overall timetable for the project, said Bloom.

In the original plans, we were going to work all the frontage road together, but now were breaking it up into two pieces, so that adds some more time to the project.

Even still, the $5.6 million construction effort is running only slightly behind schedule up to this point, said Ragle Construction Project Manager Jason Stultz. Ragle crews are currently working to raise the intersection several feet on the east side of the bridge, which will provide a new, modernized entrance into Sherman Commons and eventually do away with the ski ramps for good.

The weathers put a couple of dampers on it, but its gone pretty smooth so far, said Stultz.

TxDOT officials said theyre targeting a final completion date of early spring for the project, which will double the bridges capacity to six lanes. The new portion of the bridge, on which crews worked Friday installing a concrete guard rail, will hopefully open to traffic sometime in March or April, said Bloom.

Work on the northbound frontage road will continue into January, according to a handout provided by TxDOT, after which a new traffic signal will be installed on the east side of the bridge. From there, Phase 4 of the project will begin, the focus of which will be on the west side of the bridge. A portion of Loy Lake Road will be closed during this phase, though only the small portion of the street in front of Chipotle Mexican Grill. Life for drives will remain relatively unchanged, however, as the turn-around will temporarily function as a two-way roadway, providing all-direction access for drivers.

Gutter systems are designed to control the flow of water away from your home, preventing a list of problems. Here are the 5 most common damages that can occur due to clogged gutters.

Flooded Basements The number one cause of water damage in basements is clogged gutters. When rain water comes off your roof and has nowhere to go, it will find the path of least resistance. Often times this is inside your soffits and siding all the way to the lowest point in the home, your basement.

Cracked Foundations - are most threatening in colder climates when a homes foundation is compromised by the stress of freezing temperatures. When water is allowed to settle around your homes foundation and causes a condition called frost-heave which can cause severe cracks to foundation walls.

Insect breeding ground Free standing water and debris filled gutters are a paradise for several species of insects. Mosquitos, wood destroying insects, wasps, and even termites can live inside your gutters and find their way into your home.

Rotten Wood - is a result of moisture being trapped and cut off from air circulating to dry out the wood fascia around the house. The rotted area will quickly get worse if the gutters are not cleaned.

Using ladders and walking on roofs can be dangerous if youre not equipped with the right equipment. Gutter cleaning by Window Genie will guarantee you clean and free flowing gutters. Beyond the End Zone: Lights out

    - November 16, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Final score: La Jolla Country Day 61, Maranatha Christian 21.

Key plays: Maranatha Christian fumbled away two possessions in the first quarter. LJCD converted them into one-play touchdown drives, scoring on a 51-yard run by RB Cole Goldklang and a 6-yard run by QB Braxton Burmeister. Goldklang also caught a short pass from Burmeister and turned it into a 73-yard TD midway through the second quarter. The Torreys had a 38-0 halftime lead.

Quotable: I just want to get into the end zone as many times as I can, said Goldklang. Every time I touch the ball I have the end zone on my mind. That meant full speed all the way.

Key stats: Brown had two interceptions in the game, the first two of his four-year high school career. Burmeister completed 13 of 20 passes for 265 yards and three TDs.

Next up: LJCD plays at top-seeded Holtville, a 34-26 winner over Calvary Christian, in Fridays semifinals. Holtville is the Division V defending champion.

Quotable, too: I was happy with the way we played, but weve got to play better next week, said LJCD coach Tyler Hales. We cant fumble the ball going into the red zone (which they did on the games first drive). We cant get stupid penalties that got us off the field on a couple of drives. ... Weve got to treat every week like a championship game. If we dont win, then we arent moving on.

Making history: This was the first football playoff game in school history for Maranatha, which was playing 8-man football three years ago.

Let there be lights: Maranatha Christians field does not have permanent lights, so the Eagles have to bring in portable lighting for each home game during the season. Maranatha AD Steve Whitley was actually scrambling this week to come up with the 10 light stands that lit up the field against LJCD. The company he had used all season didnt have any lights available. They were sold out because of the time change, said Whitley. Who knew lighting came at a premium after we turned back the clocks? Whitley said it costs $1,100 a game to bring in the lights, plus the cost of gas to run each generator. He said its worth it: Id rather have a home game (than play off campus), and if we can break even Im totally happy with that.

Whats with the grass stains? Hales said earlier in the week he expected the Torreys to play with a chip on our shoulders after getting a No. 5 seed in Division V. The Torreys believed their strength of schedule should have been enough to earn them a higher seed and a home game. That wasnt how things came out with the new power rankings used for playoff seeding. That means the road to the finals is entirely on the road. Perhaps the biggest shock at Maranatha was playing on real grass for only the second time this season (the other was at Castle Park High).

Finishing kick: LJCDs Grayson Lyman got plenty of exercise in the game running on and off the field for kickoffs and extra points. Turns out that was nothing for Lyman, who also competes on the Torreys cross country team. He finished 11th on Friday afternoon at the Coastal Conference championships, clocking a 17:37 on the 3.1-mile course at Kit Carson Park. LJCDs Julius Diehr was the winner.

Pair sew up major industry award

    - November 16, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

    JOHN COWPLAND

AWARD-WINNING UPHOLSTERERS: Award-winning upholsterers: James Simons and Owain Jones, owners of Hawkes Bay Trim and Canvas, fit a seat into a car.

A small canvas-fabrication business has been recognised on the world stage for its craftsmanship. Hawkes Bay Trim and Canvas recently won an international industry award for excellence in specialty fabric application for its upholstery of a Chevrolet Bel Air car.

Owain Jones and James Simons started the Hastings-based company in 2012.

After a few years working in industrial textiles, the pair decided to go it alone, albeit on a shoestring budget.

Jones kept working at a local gibbing firm while Simons started working for the business.

"We just opened the door and saw what happened. We started pretty minimalistic with a bench, a compressor and a sewing machine and a few other tools."

Jones joined Simons about a year down the track, once there was enough work to keep them busy.

They do everything from auto and marine upholstery to shades, screens, umbrellas and gazebos. "Our strength is our ability to cover all those areas. When one thing slows down, another picks up."

Repairing upholstery for secondhand car dealers keeps them going during winter, then when the suns starts to shine, customers want work done on their boats or shade sails for the garden.
