PITTSBURGH (KDKA) Updating your kitchen countertops with the latest look might seem like a great and relatively easy remodeling project.
But, you need to be careful because some new trends might not stand up to the way you use your kitchen.
However, Angies List has some advice for what to ask before investing in a culinary makeover.
Countertops are true workhorses that can transform the look of your kitchen.
We still see most people in that granite and quartz world, contractor Geoff Horen said. Concrete and wood tend to be and recycled glass, tend to be what I kinda call our HGTV products.
The first thing you need to ask yourself is not just how much youre willing to spend, but how much you should spend.
Countertops are no different than any other type of remodeling project. Its really important to assess the value of your neighborhood. You dont want to overinvest in your house because you wont get the return. So, for example if you have a rental property that you rent out for $1000/month, installing countertops that are $80/square foot is way too much money to invest, Angie Hicks from Angies List said.
You also need to determine how youll be using your countertops. Do you spend a lot of time in the kitchen? Do you do a lot of cooking? Are you worried about stains or scratches?
Sometimes people will say things like, I want to be able to put hot pans right on my countertop. Well, then those people, generally speaking, need to go toward a granite product because granite has a heat tolerance of like 900 to 1,200 degrees, Horen said.
When deciding on a material, ask what fits with the rest of your homes style and design. A modern concrete countertop may look out of place in a more traditional kitchen.

Slowly but surely, U.S. office construction is on the rise.
For much of the six years since the economy tumbled in 2008, office developers havent been very busy. Save for the occasional city with a booming industry led by Houston and Silicon Valley new office construction has been sparse.
But thats been changing, particularly over the past year-and-a-half, numbers from the Census Bureau released last week show.
Office developers in September were spending at a pace that was up about 18% compared with September 2013, the Census said. The pace in September, if annualized, would result in $37 billion worth of office building construction for the year, the Census said.
That made office one of the fastest growing categories for construction spending multifamily grew more than 20% and is at about the level of construction seen in 2005.
Of course thats still well below the nearly $60 billion of office construction underway the last two times the market peaked in 2008 and 2000, but well above the $21 billion of office construction seen in 2011, one of the lowest levels in a generation.
Reasons vary, but generally the uptick is attributed to growing confidence by developers, investors and lenders, thanks to gradually growing occupancy rates and values, as well as loosening lending standards.
Of course, theres still more room for rents and occupancies to grow. U.S. office vacancy rates averaged at 16.8% in the third quarter, only a nudge down from a post-bust high of 17.6% that was reached in 2010, according to Reis Inc.

When Dave Branson, the executive director of the Building and Construction Trades Council of South Central Wisconsin, stopped by the office on a recent morning, he handed me a card.
On it was a list of skilled trades followed by a set of figures that showed the hourly pay and fringe benefits for each of them.
Examples:
Boilermakers earn $32.05 an hour with fringes averaging another $28.04 for a total of $60.09 per hour.
Total hourly pay and fringes for bricklayers: $51.74; cement finishers, $50.05; drywall finishers, $43.65; electricians, $54.63; ironworkers, $53.23; laborers, $40.09; painters, $43.35; plumbers, $55.24; sheet metal workers, $58.95.
You get the picture.
There are decent-paying jobs to be had, but in an age when many believe a college degree is the only avenue to success and others are leery that they don't have the qualifications to work in a trade, the construction industry is having trouble finding enough applicants.
In Milwaukee a few years back, both employers and unions began searching for ways to connect the unemployed and especially young minorities with these jobs. At first the employers group, the Wisconsin Regional Training Partnership, and the building trades organization, Big Step, set out on their own. They eventually merged their efforts and now with help from Dane County and several city agencies are well into an initiative to connect job seekers with construction work here.
"Labor and management have a shared stake in finding and training workers for these jobs," Mark Kessenich, the WRTP's vice president, said on a visit to the office.
As Cap Times reporter Steve Elbow reported earlier this year, the county, the trades and community groups like the Urban League and the Nehemiah Corp. are hoping that the program will help fill construction jobs and also help put minority job seekers to work.

12770 El Camino Real -- Rendering courtesy of Kilroy Realty Corp.
Kilroy Realty Corp. of Los Angeles has begun construction on a new $45 million office building, which officials said is the first speculative construction in eight years in San Diegos Del Mar Heights submarket.
The 74,895-square-foot Class A building is set for completion in the fourth quarter of 2015, on a four-acre site at 12770 El Camino Real at Townsgate Drive. It will be the third building at The Heights at Del Mar, a 219,000-square-foot office campus that Kilroy acquired in 2013.
Officials said the new three-story building, designed by the architecture firm Gensler, is being developed to LEED Gold sustainability standards. It will include floor-to-ceiling glass, a top-floor balcony and indoor/outdoor workspaces.
The campus currently includes a fitness center, golf simulator and outdoor amphitheater. Brokerage company Cassidy Turley has been hired to handle leasing at the new building.
Kilroy Realty Corp. (NYSE: KRC) is a 65-year-old company that oversees a 13.5 million-square-foot portfolio of commercial properties, primarily on the West Coast. The real estate investment trust is among the largest holders of office properties in San Diego County.
San Diego officials are currently considering Kilroys plans for One Paseo, a $650 million mixed-use development planned for a site at Del Mar Heights Road and El Camino Real, adjacent to The Heights at Del Mar.

Dodgers teammate Adrian Gonzalez -- MLB's RBI champ, with Gold Glove and Silver Slugger Awards as well -- said, "If somebody even tries to mention someone else, they're an idiot."
Kershaw, who won his third NL Cy Young Award on Wednesday, is considered by many the favorite to not only overcome the candidacies of fellow NL MVP Award finalists Andrew McCutchen of the Pirates and Giancarlo Stanton of the Marlins, but also the bias of some voters who believe that a pitcher shouldn't win the trophy no matter what he's accomplished.
Even Dodgers Hall-of-Fame former manager Tom Lasorda, a pitcher in his playing days, chimed in this week, siding with those that believe if a position player can't win the Cy Young Award, a pitcher shouldn't win the MVP Award.
"Tommy's an opinionated guy and that's OK," said Kershaw, who jokingly referred to Lasorda's view as a "ringing endorsement."
Kershaw's manager, Don Mattingly, was in that camp. But Mattingly, who won the American League MVP Award in 1985, changed his mind while watching Kershaw go 21-3 with a 1.77 ERA and enough record-setting achievements to validate comparisons to Sandy Koufax.
"I flip-flopped from when I played, but as a manager you just see the value of what a guy like Clayton's been able to do," Mattingly said. "I do think it needs to be one of those years where it seems like it's almost extraordinary, and it seems to be one of those years. I see the value in that guy, as opposed to when I was playing -- not that you didn't see value in pitching, but it's a different thing."
The most recent time a National League pitcher won the Most Valuable Player Award, the Rules Committee lowered the mound soon after. It was 1968, "The Year of the Pitcher," and Bob Gibson was the NL MVP Award winner with a 1.12 ERA. Seriously, 1.12. The AL has had seven pitchers win MVP Awards since Cy Young Awards were given in both leagues, most recently Justin Verlander in 2011.
MLB.com Dodgers reporter Ken Gurnick makes a case for Clayton Kershaw as the National League MVP
The closest an NL pitcher has come to winning an MVP since 1968 was runner-up Tom Seaver in '69. Greg Maddux finished third in '95 behind Barry Larkin and Dante Bichette.

The Waltair Division of East Coast Railway is back on track with restoration of the K-K line. Most of the work has been completed and the requirement of rakes is being met. The 1 VK (Visakhapatnam-Kirandul) passenger train has been restored. Barring works like replacement of the roofing sheets on the platforms in Visakhaptnam, Duvvada and Vizianagaram railway stations, most of the other works have been completed, Divisional Railway Manager Anil Kumar said on Wednesday.
The requirement of roofing sheets in the city is huge in view of the colossal damage caused by the cyclone. We have placed orders and hope to get them in the next 10 to 15 days, he said.
Asked whether there were any plans to replace the sheets with high quality ones that could withstand higher wind speeds, Mr. Anil Kumar said that the immediate thrust was on providing shelter to passengers from the sun and rain. On the demand for construction of concrete slabs for all platforms in Visakhapatnam as was done at Secunderabad, he said it involved capital expenditure and a decision on it could be taken only at a higher level.
All flights operating to and from Visakhapatnam International Airport have been restored barring the Silk Air flight to Singapore, according to Airport Director C. Pattabhi.
A new design with higher quality roof, that can withstand wind speeds of over 250 kph, has been ordered to enable it to withstand future cyclones. The glazing work has started and the roofing agents have arrived but the roofing material could take another 10 days to arrive, he said.
The Silk Air is expected to resume their direct flights from Visakhapatnam to Singapore with effect from November 16, Mr. Pattabhi added.
