    Billionaire's advice: Become a plumber

    - November 12, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Former New York City Mayor and billionaire Michael Bloomberg has some advice for high school seniors: forget college, become a plumber instead.

"Today if your kid wants to go to college or become a plumber, you've got to think long and hard," said Bloomberg Monday at the annual meeting of Wall Street trade group SIFMA.

"If he's not going to go to a great school and he's not super smart academically, but is smart in terms of dealing with people and that sort of thing, being a plumber is a great job because you have pricing power, you have an enormous skill set," he said.

The founder of financial data and news services company Bloomberg L.P. even went as far as to say that students considering Harvard should do the math.

You could pay $50,000 to $60,000 a year to Harvard or you could make that much as an apprentice plumber, he explained.

Is college worth it? Bloomberg -- who attended Johns Hopkins University and Harvard Business School -- knows what it takes to build a business, and he sees a lot of opportunity for middle-class Americans entering the service trades.

He mentioned the plumber father of one of his employees to help make the case.

"He's got six plumbers working for him, he's a scratch golfer, he goes around playing golf courses I only dream about," quipped Bloomberg, drawing chuckles from the audience. "He's built a business, he's had a chance to do that. He never went to college."

The former mayor claimed that such careers are more important now than ever as technology has made it so middle-class professions don't pay like they used to. He believes that's why the latest labor statistics show that wages remain stagnant even as employment has gone up.

"In law firms now you hit a button and get research. It used to be law clerks looking through books," said Bloomberg.

Lucky Deer Freed from Plastic Halloween Pumpkin Rethinking Pest Control

    - November 12, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Chicago, IL (PRWEB) November 11, 2014

On November 10 an Ohio deer captured national attention when concerned residents discovered it had a plastic Halloween pumpkin stuck on its head, covering its mouth which prevented it from eating or drinking (WKYC Channel 3 News). There was then a sigh of relief late-afternoon when the deer was finally freed from the plastic pumpkin by rescue workers, but the situation raises questions about the dangers that can occur when wildlife get too close to humans. Bird-X, humane animal control experts, explains why this story should have people thinking about pest control in a different light.

This situation was most likely caused by a child leaving a trick-or-treating Halloween pumpkin out, and as the Channel 3 story reported, Neighbors say now that it's over, this definitely won't happen next Halloween because all the kids in the neighborhood know not to leave their buckets out again.

Deer are a common pest animal that Bird-X, humane pest control experts for over 50 years, commonly deals with. Not only can human materials such as plastic pumpkins hurt deer, so can any kind of pesticide sprayed on grass, trees, or other shrubbery that deer eat.

Deer also become pests to humans when they eat said landscaping or spread parasites such as deer ticks, but deer control can prove to be extremely difficult. Building fences is very effective, but not always practical or desirable for certain locations such as front porches. Since deer are creatures of habit, the most effective deer control methods involve making areas uncomfortable and unwelcoming, keeping deer away from harm as well as protecting human property and health.

The Deer Gard is an electronic deer repellant device that is motion-activated, nearly silent to humans, and extremely effective in keeping deer out of treated areas. It uses sound waves that are above the human range of hearing, but are heard loud and clear by deer and other pest animals. When used on a porch or outdoor area, it irritates deer the closer they get, and is very effective in changing undesirable habits such as eating landscaping.

The Deer Gard does not harm deer or other pest animals, it simply irritates them to keep them out of areas they arent wanted. The sound waves wont penetrate walls so dogs, cats, and other pets out of range are not affected.

Another solution is to scatter irritating scent granules around areas where deer arent welcome. Some sources say chili pepper, dried peppermint, vinegar, or other home remedies work, but Bird-X has found a combination of these irritants is the best solution, which is what led to the creation of Natures Defense. This all-natural, biodegradable organic product has been repelling pest animals (especially deer) for many years.

Bird-X, Inc. has spent over 50 years as the leading international brand of humane bird and pest control products and is dedicated to protecting the health of humans, wildlife, and the environment in which we all live. The Chicago-based company manufactures a complete line of unique pest control products with an unmatched focus on quality, efficacy, and customer service.

    Good behaviour on bonfire night

    - November 12, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Firework night is often associated with increases in anti-social behaviour, but this year the town was generally quiet and behaviour was good.

Unfortunately the town saw its first residential burglary for some time.

The offence happened whilst the owners were away between the October 31 and November 5.

A house in Weatherbury Way was entered by forcing the front door and property was taken. The rear patio doors were also damaged.

On the November 5 suspects also took a small 50cc motocross bike for a garden in Holbaek Close, the offence taking place overnight.

It is likely that a vehicle was used to take the scooter away as it is a heavy object and had a locking device fitted to the wheel.

This past week have seen my team make several arrests for minor drugs offences, shoplifters have been arrested and charged as has a local male for offences which we believe are connected to poaching. Another local male was charged with theft of diesel.

On Friday police stopped a vehicle in Mill Street, Dorchester, a search of the vehicle resulted in the discovery of class A drugs.

The occupants of the vehicle were arrested and are now on police bail while enquiries continue.

This week two males were found guilty at Bournemouth Crown Court of assault offences which took place at the George Public House last November.

Buyout Sparks New Beginning for 130-year-old Painting Business

    - November 12, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. (PRWEB) November 12, 2014

Coating and specialty contractor F.D. Thomas, Inc. has announced its acquisition of D. Zelinsky & Sons, Inc. a San Francisco Bay Area-based painting business since 1884. F.D. Thomas performs commercial and industrial painting as well as waterproofing and other specialty contracting services. F.D. Thomas is one of the largest specialty contractors in the U.S.

    D. Zelinsky & Sons longstanding tradition of high quality and versatility will continue unimpeded and uninterrupted. The business will retain its name and remain in operation as a majority owned subsidiary of F.D. Thomas, Inc. Dan Thomas, who founded F.D. Thomas in 1979 and continues today as president, sees this deal as a win-win.

Given the local reputation of one company and the wide-ranging expertise of the other, this acquisition is advantageous for both of us, said Thomas. It offers F.D. Thomas valuable name recognition and customer relationships in the SF Bay Area commercial painting market.

    D. Zelinsky & Sons was once one of the largest painting contractors not only in San Francisco, but the U.S. In 1936, they were the only painting contractor capable of completing the massive painting of the U.S. Library of Congress and the Department of the Interior. D. Zelinsky & Sons has seen its sales volume dip in recent years. Reenergized by the backing and leadership of new corporate ownership, the company is now well positioned to regain lost market share.

The acquisition also offers F.D. Thomas room to expand its product offerings to include fabric wall panels and commercial window coverings. D. Zelinsky & Sons has been Northern Californias exclusive distributor/dealer of Solarfective commercial and residential shading systems and SoftWalls upholstered wall and ceiling systems.

The McCloskey brothers gained ownership control of the D. Zelinsky & Sons in 1977. Edward G. Zelinsky (third generation) remained as a minority shareholder until 2000, at which time Rick and Jim McCloskey gained full ownership. Though Jim McCloskey has retired, Rick McCloskey will continue to serve on the D. Zelinsky board and remains a minority owner of the company.

About F.D. Thomas Inc. F.D. Thomas Inc. provides the widest range of knowledge and experience in the coating and specialty contracting industry. For over 35 years, F.D. Thomas has combined traditional methods, modern technology and solid work ethic to solve any problem its customers bring. With locations in Sacramento, CA; Oakland, CA; Tacoma, WA; Washington, DC; and Medford, OR; F.D. Thomas provides expert service for major industrial facilities, commercial building owners, public agencies and entertainment/sports complexes throughout the United States.

Board: Unlicensed Contractors Nabbed In Alhambra, Other Cities

    - November 12, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

SACRAMENTO (AP) A statewide sting has nabbed 112 unlicensed contractors who could face criminal charges for offering home repair services in seven cities, a state board said.

During the two-day sting last week, investigators posing as homeowners called suspected unlicensed operators asking for bids on painting, landscaping, masonry, tree removal and other work.

All of the suspects could face misdemeanor charges for contracting without a license, according to the California Contractors State License Board. The charge carries a maximum possible penalty of six months in jail and a $5,000 fine. The agency says 11 of the suspects were repeat offenders.

It said 88 of the suspects might face fines up to $1,000 for not including their license numbers in advertising or failing to disclose that they are not licensed and therefore cant bid on projects over $500.

Six could be charged with requesting excessive down payments, which by state law cannot exceed 10 percent of a contract or $1,000, whichever is less.

Most of the suspects were sent notices to appear in court at a later date, but five had outstanding arrest warrants. Two were on probation and one was a registered sex offender.

In Alhambra, three suspects were booked into jail on outstanding warrants related to drugs, traffic offenses and prior illegal contracting charges.

If you knew their backgrounds, youd never allow them into your home, licensing board registrar Steve Sands said in a statement.

Other places involved in the sting were in Aptos, Chula Vista, Castro Valley, Montecito, Rancho Mirage and West Sacramento.

One repeat offender in Montecito, in Santa Barbara County, was so upset at being caught for the second time that he tried to put a hex on the investigators, the board said.
