Fortress mode as G20 fences up

    - November 11, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Video will begin in 5 seconds.

Hundreds of police are warned to expect an "unpredictable" G20 as Premier Campbell Newman says "I am apprehensive".

Security barricades have gone up around four key locations in inner-city Brisbane overnight ahead of the G20 summit.

They are the foundations of what will be the G20 city's fortress.

Roads are being progressively closed, with lanes blocked at the Fortitude Valley end of Adelaide Street, at Macrossan Street and at Grey Street at South Brisbane.

Further road closures come into effect in the cityand for South Brisbanefrom Wednesday, Thursday and then for the weekend.

The heaviest security appears to be around the Marriott Hotel at the top end of Adelaide Street near Petrie Bight, where traffic comes in from the Ivory Street road tunnel.

At the Marriott Hotel, on the corner of Adelaide and Queen streets, there is a two-metre high reinforced steel barricade outside the hotel's front door.

Exciting Ryedale hopeful Hi George to hit ground running

    - November 11, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

HI GEORGE, whose one and only outing over fences saw him gain a notable success at Catterick last season, makes his eagerly awaited reappearance at Sedgefield today.

Trained at Norton by Malcolm Jefferson, the gelding gained a narrow success at Catterick over Holywell, who went on to become one of the best novice chasers of the season and is now among the favourites for the Cheltenham Gold Cup.

While beating Holywell, who took a while to get the hang of jumping fences, may well have flattered Hi George, there is no doubt that he's an exciting horse.

He should be a tough but to crack in the featured Hellens Group Handicap Chase. Brian Hughes has the mount.

Distime, trained by John Quinn - Jefferson's neighbour - should be hard to beat in the Nortonthorpe Industrial Estate Huddersfield Novices' Limited Handicap Chase.

Restricted to only two outings last season, the eight-year-old returned from a lengthy absence to finish second at Aintree a couple of weeks ago to Baileys Concerto, who has been in unstoppable form lately and who has won again since at Musselburgh.

Distime should have benefited from his comeback outing and is napped to go one better this afternoon, despite having top weight to carry.

The opening Newcastle Flooring Novices' Hurdle is the target of Irish raider Balbriggan.

Trained by Gordon Elliott, whose horses are always to be feared in Britain, Balbriggan successfully mixes chasing and hurdling. The seven-year-old is already twice a winner this season. He can make it three.

Recent winners Accordingtoscript (2.50) and Agent Fedora (3.50) are also worth considering.

    Electrician (general) – Career Centre

    - November 11, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Electricians may work in workshops or on location at construction sites, private dwellings, industrial plants, power stations, offices and anywhere requiring electrical maintenance. They may work in cramped conditions or at heights, and sometimes their work can be dangerous. They usually work normal business hours but may be required to be on call day or night to conduct emergency repairs.

According to industry, electricians can expect to earn as much as approximately $1200.00 per week (full-time and before tax). Self-employed electricians can often earn more.

Electricians use tools such as screwdrivers, pliers, drills and wire strippers. They also use ohmmeters or voltmeters for testing electrical equipment. Since the work can sometimes be dangerous, they may be required to wear and use personal protective equipment (PPE) such as bright and reflective safety clothing, hard hats, earmuffs, gloves, goggles and enclosed steel-capped boots.

To become an electrician you usually need to complete an Electrical Appliance Serviceperson or Electrical Mechanic Electrotechnology Electrician apprenticeship. As an apprentice, you enter into a formal training contract with an employer. You spend most of your time working and learning practical skills on the job and you spend some time undertaking structured training with a registered training provider of your choice. They will assess your skills and when you are competent in all areas, you will be awarded a nationally-recognised qualification. The apprenticeship usually takes 4 years to complete. Visit the ApprentiCentre to find out more.

To improve your chances of gaining an apprenticeship, you can learn some relevant electrical skills through the Certificate I in Engineering (Pre-Apprenticeship - Electrical), which includes a supervised work placement. The Certificate takes 6 months (1 semester) full-time to complete.

If you are still at school, you may be able to access an apprenticeship through your school. You generally start your school-based apprenticeship by attending school three days a week, spending one day at a registered training organisation and one day at work.

Talk to your schools VET Co-ordinator to discuss possibly starting your training now through VET in Schools.

If you get a full-time apprenticeship you can apply to leave school before reaching the school leaving age.

If you are no longer at school you can apply for an apprenticeship and get paid while you learn and work.

Studying English and mathematics at school will help you in your further studies in this area.

Kidney Dialysis Company Expands Into The Hospital Business

Dialysis giant DaVita HealthCare Partners is moving into the hospital business.

Critics of America's health care system say it's really a "sick care" system. Doctors and hospitals only get paid for treating people when they're sick.

But that's starting to change. Health insurance companies and big government payers like Medicare are starting to reward doctors and hospitals for keeping people healthy.

So, many health care companies are trying to position themselves as organizations that help people stay well.

One of the latest is DaVita HealthCare Partners, a provider of kidney dialysis services. The company operates 2,152 dialysis centers in the U.S. and 87 in its fast-growing international buisiness.

DaVita is making a move into primary care, and it just announced a joint venture with a hospital company in Colorado and Kansas.

DaVita CEO Kent Thiry says it's like changing the company from being an electrician into a general contractor. "And in so doing," he says, "[We] have a much more comprehensive impact on how the house gets designed, how it gets built, how it gets maintained for the betterment of those who live in the house. That's the simplest way to characterize the change."

DaVita's partner in the new venture is Centura Health, the biggest hospital company in Colorado. Like DaVita, it is also expanding aggressively into primary care and services beyond hospital-based procedures.

Centura CEO Gary Campbell says that in order for his company to keep people healthy, it needs the ability to crunch lots of health data. The idea is to use computer systems to keep track of peoples' health, and flag health problems before they happen. He says DaVita HealthCare Partners is really good at that.

WINCHESTER -- When William Sutton was discharged from the U.S. Navy in 2006, he found the civilian world was a huge, different place.

"The main thing you have in the military is structure and when I got out [of] there, I didn't have it," Sutton said. "It was tough adjusting to conducting how people do things in the civilian world."

But Sutton was able to make the transition, leading a fruitful career and raising a loving family. However, some veterans are not so lucky and end up becoming homeless. That is why in 2013, Sutton founded The Veterans for Valor Foundation, which will open a center to provide vocational training and counseling for transient veterans on Veterans Day.

Sutton said the exact scope of the homeless veterans problem is hard to determine.

"We don't have any figures on it because nobody has been keeping count," Sutton said. "A lot of homeless veterans are not going to admit they're veterans, either."

According to Sutton, many homeless veterans are too proud to admit their troubles.

"A lot of military veterans aren't going to come and say 'I'm struggling' or 'I need help,'" Sutton said. "One thing we're taught is you deal with the punches given to you and continue moving."

City orders apartments to be closed

An apartment complex in West Toledo is called Riviera Maia, apparently after the exotic Mexican resort area. All the apartment layouts have Mexican names, such as Acapulco and Playa.

But right now, about the only thing the two have in common is water. In the Toledo case, its leaking through the ceilings.

The city of Toledo last week ordered the closure of eight out of 63 buildings at the garden apartment complex, declaring them unfit and uninhabitable, after the owners, Kidz Real Estate Group LLC of Chicago, had voluntarily closed 19 buildings.

PHOTO GALLERY: Click here to view more photos

Toledo filed a lawsuit against the owners over the buildings one year ago, and recently obtained a court-ordered assessment of repair needs. Chris Zervos, director of the Department of Building Inspection, said the repairs will cost millions.

A recommended repair, he said, is installation of pitched roofs to better shed the rain.

Its beyond us why anyone would purposely allow their asset to be devalued, he said. We can make them make the improvements or tear down the nuisance. He said the city would like to work with the owners to restore the buildings because rental apartments are in demand in Toledo.

The buildings are basically in decent-enough shape. Theyre salvageable, Mr. Zervos said. He said the city started issuing repair orders in 2009 when inspectors learned that the owners had been making repairs without obtaining permits for inspection.

    Driveways – Asphalt Pavement

    - November 11, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Inviting, Attractive The appearance of your driveway creates an impression about your home and way of life. An inviting driveway provides a focal point as passersby and visitors approach your home. And certainly an attractive driveway, one with "curb appeal," adds value to your home investment. So it is worthwhile to plan your driveway carefully. With Hot Mix Asphalt as your materialand some attention to design and constructionyour driveway will provide years of lasting service and an excellent return on the investment.

Just What is Asphalt Pavement? It's an engineered mixture of aggregate, or stones and sand, with liquid asphalt cement (a petroleum product). Varying sizes of aggregates are heated, then mixed, in exact proportions, with asphalt cement that has been liquefied at about 300F. While the mixture is still hot, it is delivered to your driveway and paved on top of a base or subgrade that has already been prepared. Very soon after paving, the mixture cools and hardens and you can drive on it right away.

What You Receive with Hot Mix Asphalt? You'll recognize several benefits with asphalt pavements, compared to other, more costly options.

Asphalt lends itself readily to the types of service that are usual in residential areas. If a utility line must pass under your driveway, repairs are performed more easily and quickly than with alternative materials, such as concrete. The same is true if undue ground settlement should occur naturally.

Asphalt driveways can also be designed using porous asphalt, a special asphalt mix that allows water to drain through the pavement into a subgrade reservoir. Porous asphalt can often be used to meet local impermeable surfaces codes and offer a good-looking surface that is easy to maintain.

And asphalt is the most cost-effective option you can choose. Just as it has for millions of homeowners the world over, Hot Mix Asphalt can last many years for you with only minimal maintenance.
