Massive: Peter Spooner's work on the highway to Newcastle, north of Sydney. He paid special attention to the landforms while selecting on-site alignments for vistas and construction.
PETER SPOONER 1919-2014
Professor Emeritus Peter Spooner made an outstanding contribution to landscape design as a professional discipline and activity in Australia. His appreciation of Fine Arts and practical skills enabled him to create some memorable landscape designs, record buildings and environments in crayon and pencil and restore antique furniture.
His many friends and colleagues enjoyed correspondence and cards written in his beautiful copperplate script. He encouraged architects and subsequently landscape architects to design with utility and beauty, but his overriding achievement was in the educational development of the professional landscape architecture discipline at the University of NSW.
Recognition: Peter Spooner in 1971.
Peter Spooner was born on November 4, 1919 in Rose Bay and in 1933 the family moved to Vaucluse to live in the house his father built, designed by Leslie Wilkinson. Peter's father and Wilkinson became lifelong friends, which may have influenced Peter's decision to become an architect after he completed his schooling at Scots College.

While studying architecture at the Sydney Technical College, Spooner met a fellow student, Myles Dunphy, who introduced him to the joys of bushwalking and mapping. This friendship continued throughout their lives.
Spooner finished his Diploma of Architecture (Honours) a year early and joined the army as a lieutenant. He was deployed to Darwin during World War II and during his service, in 1942, he married Jean Morris, a secretary in an architectural office.
After the war Spooner designed and built a reinforced concrete house (bombproof) in Kissing Point Road, which was featured in magazines. The Spooners lived there for a few years until he designed and built his next house, in Warrangi Street, Turramurra. This was an innovative Y-shaped house and was also featured in the press.

Noting the countrys resurgent ICT landscape and rich talent pool, German software behemoth SAP has invested 3 million Euros (about P170 million) to open its third office in the Philippines and 60th office in the Asia Pacific region.
Adaire Fox-Martin, president of SAP Asia Pacific Japan, speaks during the unveiling
The new facility, located at the Cyberscape Beta building in Ortigas complex in Pasig City, was inaugurated on Friday, Nov. 7, by top SAP regional executives and government officials.
The company said the new office, which will occupy two floors of the building, will serve as the hub of SAP shared services team for sales and finance.
Part of the services team for sales is an initiative called Project Nucleus where SAP will set up a call center in the area to support sales requirements across Asia.
The project, which involves the Philippines and India, aims to double the staff strength by next year. Currently, the new Ortigas hub has about 800 local employees.
As for the services team for finance, the company disclosed that the new office will serve as the back office finance support for SAP companies around the world.
The software firm, which has been operating in the Philippines for the last 19 years, has two existing offices in the country one is in the Fort Global City that caters to the domestic market and another in Ortigas which manages the companys HR consulting and shared services for SAP and customers globally.

Department of Trade and Industry undersecretary Nora Terrado, herself a former software executive, read the message of Pres. Benigno S. Aquino III, who said that he was able to meet SAP chief financial officer and COO Luka Mucic in a recent trip to Europe.

There are others who are feeling sufficiently emboldened to come forward to tell their stories of sexual harassment on Parliament Hill.
Or, more accurately, there were others emboldened to come forward but as they survey the landscape of three explosive days in Ottawa, one fears the chill returning.
Heres the damage as the House of Commons takes a much-needed week-long break after the tumult of last week.
Two Liberals MPs, their careers likely ruined.
Two men denying guilt, but already deemed guilty in the court of public opinion.
Two NDP MPs, feeling, according to their colleagues, victimized a second time.
Genuine anger from the NDP directed at Liberal leader Justin Trudeau.
Four days out of Ottawa and the questions one hears are corrosive, but understandable.
Who made the allegations? What did these guys do?
Itll be the question lingering in every federal riding this week.

The Institution of Engineers offers its help in drawing up a master plan to prevent disasters.
PETALING JAYA: The Institution of Engineers Malaysia (IEM) has called for an integrated approach against floods and landslides in Cameron Highlands and offered its expertise in formulating a master plan to prevent such disasters.
In a press statement issued today, IEM President Lim Chow Hock also told the government to order an immediate freeze of excessive land clearing.
Any further opening up of the highlands will definitely aggravate the problem of soil erosion and increase the risk of flooding, he said.
The long term solution lies in the control of land use and the relevant authorities must be serious in tackling the root cause.
Referring to areas that have already been opened up, Lim said authorities should make sure that the land owners and operators undertake measures to reduce soil erosion.
He said the plastic houses that shelter vegetable farms on hilly slopes should have facilities to hold back water from flowing into rivers when it rains.
There must be an integrated approach to solve the recurrent flooding and landslide problem, which should include controlled land use and land clearing, the application of best agricultural management practices, the relocation of squatters along river reserves, the appropriate flood mitigation measures and the necessary flood forecasting and warning system, he said.
In order to prevent further loss of lives, it is important to formulate a Cameron Highlands Disaster Prevention Master Plan urgently.

DAPs M Manogaran says it is an open secret that the land office and the Municipal Council are corrupt.
PETALING JAYA: DAP member M Manogaran has fingered the Land Office and Municipal Council in Cameron Highlands for being corrupt and allowing the horrific mud floods to occur last week in which five people were killed and hundreds evacuated.
In a statement, Manogaran said, It is open knowledge that the land office and the Majlis are corrupt.
Illegal land clearing is rampant. Uncontrolled land clearing is permitted under the guise of development.
He also attacked Pahang Menteri Besar Adnan Yaakob for merely playing the blame game by saying residents dumping trash into the river resulted in waters bursting its banks during heavy rainfall.
This is an attempt to sweep the problem under the carpet. The problem is more than that. The real culprit is the land office and the local authority.
He also had some harsh words for current MP of Cameron Highlands, G. Palanivel who he said was simply engaging in fire fighting while the previous MP should have seen these tragedies coming Cameron Highlands way but did not see it.
Saying Cameron Highlands was facing such serious threats, Manogaran pointed out that approximately 30 landslides had occurred from Tapah all the way to the top.
He also lamented that the authorities had not even bothered to close the roads until today.
He added, It is not the rain (that caused the landslides) but clearing and disturbances to the hills which are not done properly and without expert advice.
