Shopping centre owner Hammerson has said that conditions in the UK retail market have improved since the half-year stage but are still subdued in France. Successful 'Back to School' performances by retailers and strong growth in menswear, catering and jewellery pushed sales across UK shopping centres 2.8% higher in the third quarter ended 30 September. Year-to-date UK retail sales were up 2.6%.

Sales from French shopping centres were 0.5% higher than the previous year in the third quarter but were still down 2.8% for the first nine months.

The company, which owns the Bullring shopping centre in Birmingham and Brent Cross in London, said long-term leases were achieved 9% above estimated rental value (ERV) across the group and 8.5% ahead of previous passing rents.

Retail leases were struck 15% above ERV in the UK but just 1% above ERV in France.

Biggest NY subway hub opens; expects 300,000 daily

    - November 10, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

    NEW YORK "We did it!"

The words of the lead engineer on the new Fulton Center punctuated more than a decade of work Sunday to create the primary transit link between the rebuilt World Trade Center and the rest of the city.

Nine existing subway lines converge in the $1.4 billion, 180,000-square-foot complex that will serve up to 300,000 riders a day and that includes retail and office space.

"Welcome to the station of the 21st century," said engineer Michael Horodniceanu, who led the project as president of the Metropolitan Transportation Authority's Capital Construction.

He spoke to top transit and political officials at the opening of the city's biggest subway hub that merges century-old stations with the latest digital technology and design.

The facility will open to the public Monday at 5 a.m. Eastern time.

Hundreds of thousands will enter what officials called Lower Manhattan's "next great public space." Its soaring street-level atrium is encased in a glass-and-steel shell, with luminous interior panels leading to a skylight designers call the "oculus" Latin for eye.

Livening up the climate-controlled, energy-saving spaces are various avant-garde artworks.

Construction of this vital subway hub was fraught with challenges. The five underground subway stations partly damaged on Sept. 11, 2001, were closed for months. Then, in 2012, flood waters roared into the tunnels, crippling service.

Now, just feet from the revitalized trade center, the complex is part of a "new hot area," said U.S. Sen. Charles Schumer, D-NY.

Phoenix cop, volunteers complete remodel of woman's ruined home

    - November 10, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

PHOENIX -- A west Phoenix woman is a shopping spree away from getting her life back on track after help from her local community and the Phoenix Police Department.

Last August, Linda Tims was in the midst of serious hardship as she had lost her husband and parents, had medical issues and had her home near 43rd Avenue and Thomas burglarized on multiple occasions. All of which, had left her home in a state of disarray.

Having her home burglarized may have been a blessing in disguise though, as that is how she met Phoenix Police Officer Glenn Branham, who after responding to a burglary call at her residence, decided to try and help Tims.

"When you see someone in need and after being and officer as long as I have, you can see if someone is true and who needs extra help," Branham said.

Branham, who worked in construction before becoming a police officer, said he used his connections to help gather volunteers and donations to completely remodel Tims' house.

"There was a lot of trash, a lot of debris, she had been storing up stuff for her family, so literally we had to get dumpsters here (and) we went through two 40-yard dumpsters filled with trash," Branham said.

Branham said he and volunteers redid all the drywall inside the home, repainted the walls, remodeled the kitchen with new cabinets, added tile and even did some landscaping.

On Nov. 10, after more than two months of working on the home, Branham, members of the Phoenix Police Department, donors and some of the volunteers cut the ribbon on the home for Tims, who got her first look inside.

"(It's) totally awesome," Tims said. "Now I just have to get some furniture."

Tims said she is very happy to be moving back into her home and spent Friday using $1,500 in gift cards to American Furniture, plus an additional $2,500 in cash donation to buy the furniture she needs.

Tagle appeals for aid to restore Pinoy priests Home in Rome

    - November 10, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Manila Archbishop Luis Antonio Cardinal Tagle appealed for financial support for the restoration of the Pontifico Collegio Filippino, the seminary where Filipino priests stay while pursuing further studies in Rome.

In a press statement issued Sunday on the Catholic Bishops' Conference of the Philippines (CBCP) website, Tagle encouraged the faithful to support a global fundraising campaign for the restoration of the four-storey structure at Via Aurelia in Rome.

The restoration of the Collegio will help preserve the environment of excellence it has established through the years a quality that will redound to the entire Catholic community, Tagle said of Collegio Filipino, which the CBCP calls Filipino priests' Home in Rome.

In the same statement, Collegios rector Fr. Gregory Ramon Gaston said the building was in bad shape and needed major repairs.

He particularly identified the building's pipelines and heating system as needing upgrades, and the dilapidated walls and cracked floors as needing renovation or replacement.

Gaston said that aside from the higher construction costs in Europe, the subsidy that the Collegio is currently receiving from the occupants' lodging fees and the donations it receives from guests are just enough to finance its daily operations.

Inaugurated in 1959, Collegio Filippino, officially known as Pontifical College Seminary of Our Lady of Peace and Good Voyage, has produced more than 500 alumni.

Gaston said many of these alumni are bishops, archbishops, and papal nuncios who have gone on to become professors and members of the Diocesan Curia, and serve in specialized ministries such as communications and school systems.

It takes two to four years for Filipino priests to obtain their ecclesiastical degrees, and after completing their formation, they return to their home dioceses to work with the bishops and to train future priests in seminaries, Gaston said. Elizabeth Marcelo/BM, GMA News

Remodeling brings a new look and feel for CHC

    - November 10, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

When the Cooperative Health Center opens this morning, patients and staff alike will use a different door and enter a facility that is dramatically different from what it was on Friday.

Gone will be the poor lighting and crowded waiting area. Discussing medical issues with reception staff will be less public. Separate rooms, with sliding glass-paneled doors, will create a confidential setting to discuss billing. Medical exam rooms will no longer be down the hall from nursing stations and will now surround the two stations where the nursing staff will work.

The health center has been undergoing a renovation that, with the addition of a basement that provides more room for future expansion, will cost between $5.2 million and $5.3 million, said Kyle Thomas, the Lewis and Clark County assistant director of public works.

Its also in the midst of a $48,000 rebranding that will produce a new name and logo to go with the health centers new look.

Work on the facility started in December 2013, Thomas said, noting that the renovation will add about 10,000 square feet to the building. With the addition, the health center building will contain about 37,000 square feet. Of that total square footage, some 2,500 square feet have been added to the front of the building.

The 18 medical exam rooms represent an increase of five from what the health center had, he continued. The six rooms for dental procedures will double what was previously provided.

Phase one of the reconstruction is completed and all services that were provided in the old portion of the building are being moved into the new portion of the building, Thomas said.

The new entrance and parking lot for patients is off Fee Street, around the corner as it were, from the current entrance that is familiar to those who come for health services.

Phase two work on the building will prepare it for the return of its dental services. Dental services have been temporarily relocated to an office at 251 Saddle Drive, which is a half-block east of St. Peters Hospital, the health centers website noted.

Its going to be so nice for all those folks who have suffered through the construction, said Ellen Feaver, the vice chairwoman of the health centers board.
