Home Depot: Someone's WEAK-ASS password SECURITY led to breach

    - November 7, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

    Remote control for virtualized desktops

Hackers gained access to Home Depot's network via a third-party vendor system, according to preliminary results of an investigation into the September mega-breach.

Cybercrooks used access to the US retail giants' network gained via ineffective password security at an unnamed third party vendor's system to run a stepping-stone attack that ultimately allowed them to achieve their objective of planting information-stealing malware on sales terminals, according to a statement by Home Depot on the investigation.

Following the discovery of the breach, Home Depot acted quickly to block the hackers' method of entry and purge their malware from its systems but by then the damage had already been done.

Third parties were also to blame one way or another for third parties for other high-profile breaches against retailer Target and bank JPMorgan. Target was broken into via the firm's HVAC vendor while the JPMorgan happened via a third party website.

Chris Wysopal, CTO of application security company Veracode, commented: "It is clear that the theft of third party vendor credentials is a big risk for enterprises after seeing this attack vector used in recent major breaches. Enterprises should adopt 2 factor authentication for vendors who require access to their corporate networks and applications."

As previously reported earlier today, Home Depot also admitted on Thursday that hackers has swiped 53 million email addresses during the September mega-breach earlier this year that also led to the theft of data from 56 million credit/debit cards.

Home Depot is in the process of advising affected customers. In the meantime, shoppers are advised to be on their guard against the possibility of phishing fraudsters that use the stolen information to craft more convincing scams.

Trey Ford, global security strategist at Rapid7, the developers of Metaspolit, said that the hack offered lessons that are applicable beyond the retail sector.

"So Home Depot confirmed several things the rest of us should remain aware of," Ford said. "Attackers were inside their organisation for five months before detection. The attackers entered with stolen credentials, they used a vendors username and password to log into Home Depots network.

Popular Dinton Pastures playground will now stay open for the winter

    - November 7, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

A popular playground will stay open for winter despite council bosses announcing it would be closed for six months for the grass grow.

Councillor Angus Ross, executive member for environment, revealed the change in heart at last Thursdays Wokingham Borough Council executive meeting.

At the beginning of last month the council announced repairs to the play area at Dinton Pastures would keep it closed until next Easter.

But just six days later families concerns over the closure prompted Cllr Ross to backtrack saying they were exploring ways to keep sections of the play area open.

At the meeting Cllr Tom McCann mocked the councils recent announcement the area was to close as it is not able to cope with children playing on its grass and called for any future facilities to actually be done properly.

Cllr Ross said: The play area has been a great success and we want it back in the splendid condition it was on opening.

We will not close it for six months and plan to make it more robust and able better to withstand the usage of its dedicated users.

After the meeting he added: We will be working on how to best to bring the area back as its been a victim of its own success.

Work will be starting in the next couple of weeks and we wont need to shut the whole area, though we will look at fencing some of it off.

Our decision comes in part following the publics reaction to close it and we are definitely interested in how people find it. We just needed to decide whether we could keep part of it open safely.

Lessons learnt over Tilehurst footpath and verge parking ban

    - November 7, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

The council has learnt a lesson in Tilehurst with the introduction of an experimental footway and verge parking ban, which was made permanent on Tuesday.

Although the ban was widely approved in Tilehurst, Reading Borough Council encountered problems in Mayfair, where residents have room to park off-road between their front gardens and the road on tarmac drives without damaging the wide grass verges.

They challenged the ban, saying it made no sense to displace their cars on to the busy road.

So the traffic management committee made an exception of Mayfair on Tuesday night while confirming the ban on verge and footway parking throughout the rest of the experimental area.

The committee will look into alternative restrictions to protect verges in Mayfair.

Park Lane in Tilehurst also presented problems because despite the 18-month ban on verge parking, the grass has not returned.

In a report to the committee, network manager Simon Beasley wrote: Prior to the ban, the verges had been so badly damaged that even today the verges remain in a terrible state.

Tilehurst councillor Sandra Vickers described the project as a success and called for the reseeding of the grass verges in Park Lane.

'Mad' council transport bosses vote to continue Tilehurst parking ban

She also raised concerns about the continuing pavement parking near shops, banks and cash machines and cited Recreation Road as especially bad.

    Alternatives for thirsty turf grasses

    - November 7, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

    By U-T San Diego7:20 p.m.Nov. 6, 2014

Yarrow is a low-water, blooming alternative to turf grass.

Newer lawns that were installed as sod probably rely on a cool-season grass a high-water-use variety that needs 48 inches of water per year. In San Diego County, Mother Nature only provides about 10 inches of rain per year; most of the regions water is imported from the Colorado River or Northern California.

If youre looking for an alternative, experiment with ground covers such as a warm-season grass seeded with clover. Clover offers the additional benefit of adding nitrogen to the soil. Or, try yarrow as a ground cover to create a lush, green setting with multicolored flowers in the spring. For walkable ground covers, try dymondia margaretae, also known as silver carpet.

Several local nurseries sell California-friendly and native plants. Also, check out the California Native Plant Society, the Water Conservation Garden and the San Diego Botanic Garden.

Go to WaterSmartSD.org for more gardening resources, including turf removal rebates.
