The Calgary Fire Department investigates a gas leak in the 200 block of 4th Avenue S.W. on Thursday, November 6th, 2014.
CALGARY The Calgary Fire Department is blaming ongoing construction for a gas leak at a downtown building on Thursday night.
Firefighters were called to the 200 block of 4th Avenue S.W. around 8 p.m.
When they arrived, crews could smell a strong odour of natural gas. They quickly activated the buildings alarm system, forcing workers who were still inside to exit.
Investigators determined a four inch gas line had been struck by a forklift being operated by onsite construction crews in the parkade area.
Firefighters were able to shut down the affected line and ventilate the building.
No one was injured, but the incident did cause the temporary closure of eastbound 4th Avenue at 2nd Street S.W.

In June, Glen Carbon Public Works Coordinator Mike Govreau announced he would be retiring.
The Glen Carbon Village Board accepted his letter of resignation, and Govreaus last day is tentatively set for April 30, 2015.
With this in mind, the Glen Carbon Village Board is beginning the process to find a replacement for Govreau.
Several months ago, we announced that Mr. Govreau had announced his retirement from the public works coordinator position and we have an award package and memo from Mr. (Jamie) Bowden discussing the possible options available and the action item tonight actually involves the advertisement for the position, Glen Carbon Mayor Rob Jackstadt said.
In a memorandum to the mayor and trustees, Village Administrator Jamie Bowden presented three options the board could pursue. They are: to hire from within the village, combine or assign duties of the public works coordinator to the village administrator and building and zoning administrator or solicit an ad to the public and hire from a list of applicants.
The option that I think is in the best interest to the village is to solicit to the public and see what is out there from the qualified pool. If we have internal candidates, they can apply and then we can see how they stack up against the pool, Bowden said.
Following this course of action, Bowden said one thing that needs to be addressed is the salary.
Currently, Govreaus base salary is $64,770 and Bowdens recommendation for a salary to be advertised is $66,000 to $74,000.
Trustee Brooke Harmony said she thought $66,000 was too low and would like to see the bottom come up to $70,000 in order to try to attract higher quality candidates.
She also addressed the title of public works coordinator, which she said felt like it sounded like a secretarial position.

A public meeting has been arranged to provide an update on the Proposed Cathedral Coast Walk, which is part of our Coromandel Great Walks Project.
Everyone is invited to the meeting at the Hahei Community Hall on Saturday 29 November, from 10am until midday.
"This is a chance for us to share with everyone where we're at with the Walks project and to discuss parking issues around Hahei," says Garry Towler, Council's spokesperson on the Proposed Cathedral Coast Walk. "We need to talk about the impact that increasing visitor numbers is having on Hahei and how we can best manage it short and long term," says Mr Towler.
The Proposed Cathedral Coast Walkway is being developed in partnership with DOC and local iwi Ngati Hei. Stage 1A and 1B of the Cathedral Coast Walk is approximately 10km in length from the iconic "Blowhole," at Te Pupuha Recreation Reserve at Hahei through to the Purangi Estuary at Cooks Beach. It takes in DOC estate, Council reserve and QE2 Trust land. A private section of land at Lees Rd is also being negotiated, which will help to provide additional car parking for anyone wanting to walk the route.
"While the public meeting is primarily as an update on the Walk project and parking around Hahei, DOC are also coming along to give an update on its Integrated Plan for Cathedral Cove and Hahei," says Mr Towler.
WRC has also been invited along with Council staff and elected members from our Mercury Bay Area office.
One of the next steps in the Proposed Cathedral Coast Walk project will be finalising the names of a working group , made up of permanent Hahei residents, non-permanent residents, the Hahei Business Association and Coastal Walkways. This group will be the major forum through which the Hahei community and stakeholders can table views and issues and report back to the Project Governance Group, which is made up of our Council, DOC and local iwi Ngati Hei.

Sporting a new name, new events, and so many family activities it would take a website (christmasfest.ca) to list them all.
The festivities kick off Thursday, Nov. 13 with the Tillsonburg Christmas Family Tree lighting in front of the Tillsonburg (Oxford County) Library at 7 p.m. There's a twist to the Family Christmas Tree this year organizers are selling 'snowflakes' for $1 to help decorate the tree. The white synthetic foam-style flakes will bear the family surname of the donor, and will be in full view during the day. Each night, the Christmas lights will be turned on, and the "big beautiful blue spruce" will look like a traditional holiday tree.
Proceeds from the $1 snowflake sales will go toward promoting Christmasfest... and hydro for lighting the tree.
"We were hoping it would survive the weather," said Patricia Phelps, culture and heritage manager/curator, noting the snowflake design.
Snowflakes will be sold on the November 6 and November 7 at the Tillsonburg Town Centre mall, and at Annandale National Historic Site museum.
The tree is one that was already scheduled for removal, Phelps noted.
"It was going to be cut down regardless," she said, and the Christmasfest committee felt it would make a suitable tree for the town's annual lighting.
"We'd like to thank Oxford County Library and Tillsonburg Hydro Inc for their assistance, and Advanced Automotive (Mike Dean) for transporting the tree for us.
"It's a community project lighting and decorating the tree and we'd like the whole community to celebrate with us on the 13th. We've requested Broadway be closed for the event so we can all celebrate on the street."
With good weather, said Suzanne Fleet, chair of Christmasfest and coordinator of Down Home Country Christmas, the lighting of the town Christmas tree is always well attended.

ST. CHARLESCOUNTY A 33-year-old woman who caused extensive damage to a local dentist's office by setting off the sprinkler system, has been sentenced to four years in prison.
Melissa Reann Frederick was a first-time patient in October 2013 at Streets of St. Charles Dental, at 1520 South Fifth Street, prosecutors say. After arriving, she asked to use the bathroom.
A short time later the sprinkler system was activated and caused more than $10,000 in damage to the drywall, carpet and electronic system in the office, according to court documents.
Frederick, of the 400 block of San Juan Drive, told police she accidentally lit a napkin on fire while she was trying to light the end of her eye pencil. She said when she dropped the napkin in the sink, it activated the system.
However, a construction contractor told police that Frederick's version of the events was not plausible. He said the sprinkler head is heat activated, and the temperature inside of the bathroom has to reach 155 degrees before the system goes off.
A more likely scenario was that Frederick climbed on the sink and held a lighter to the sprinkler head, court documents say.
Frederick's motive for the action was unclear.
At a hearing last week, Frederick pleaded no contest to a charge of felony property damage. Under that arrangement, she did not admit guilt but conceded the prosecution had enough evidence to secure a conviction.
Her sentence was handed down by Circuit Judge Daniel Pelikan.
