Cambridge Architectural, the leader in flexible woven wire mesh for interior and exterior building applications, is expanding its product portfolio and is now offering anodized aluminum mesh in eight colors for interior applications such as ceiling canopies and architectural drapery. Cambridge now offers the largest variety of anodized aluminum mesh patterns and colors in the architectural products industry.

Cambridge anodized aluminum mesh is available in five patterns traditionally offered in stainless steel (Shade, Mid-Shade, Mid-Balance, Diamond and Windsor). Available colors are: light bronze, medium bronze, nickel, black, pearl, blue, red and gold.

We believe this is a game-changer for architects and designers who are looking for a broader selection in lighter weight mesh, said Cambridge Architectural Brand Manager Gary Compton. When you look at whats currently offered in aluminum mesh by other manufacturers, its limited to a single pattern or two with only a couple choices in anodized colors.

More than one-third lighter in weight and requiring less structural support than stainless steel, Cambridge anodized aluminum also provides a warmer finish to the metal, according to Compton, and can be used as a decorative accent, canopy or curtain divider for a variety of interior design uses.

The lighter weight also offers the potential for lower overall costs depending on the project specifications, Compton said.

In addition to offering mesh, Cambridge can provide several sophisticated attachment systems for architectural drapery and ceiling canopies. The choices include Cambridges Curtain Attachment System that attaches flexible metal fabric to carriers and allows the curtain to roll smoothly along the track length as a window treatment or draping space divider. Flexible metal fabrics are hung sideways to maximize a draping effect.

The company plans to further expand its aluminum product line in 2015 to include new attachment systems for tension mounting.

Cambridge has produced aluminum mesh previously for custom jobs, including the elevator cabs at Carnegie Hall in New York.

Helen Schlichting, who owns a single-level holiday bach next to the multimillion-dollar luxury house that is under construction in Tindalls Bay, said the 2m high retaining wall would partly block her view of the ocean and the towering two-storey home would intrude on her privacy.

Ms Schlichting, of Browns Bay, said she had no problems with the international sailing icon but rather how Auckland Council had administered the resource consent process for his sprawling beachfront home.

She was unhappy at not being consulted, and with the consent stating that any effects on her and her property "have been disregarded".

"I do feel very disrespected by the attitude of the council resource consent officer ...

the neighbour, myself, she was disregarding is specifically named on the resource consent so they obviously realised that there would be a negative impact on us," she said.

"If I had been aware earlier of the extent and the height of the retaining wall and filling, there would have been the opportunity to discuss some details of their plans that impact my property."

A soil filling of 1000 cubic metres was being used where the 2m retaining wall was being constructed; adding a 1.1m balustrade would bring the total height to 3.1m.

"[It goes] right on our eastern boundary and right forward into our beachfront view area," she said.

The three-level 667sq m house, with five bedrooms, six bathrooms, three living areas, tennis and basketball courts and retaining wall, got resource consent last year.

One in ten decks fails inspection in the Halifax Regional Municipality, statistics obtained by CBC News show, but experts say the percentage is likely much higher.

The data covers a one-year period beginning Sept.20, 2013, two days before a deck collapsed in Dartmouth, injuring 15 people.

The city inspected 294 decks in that time and 30 failed.

"There's a lot of times we go out and somebody's not building something the way they said they were going to build it and it doesn't meet code,"says Matt Covey, HRM's manager of building standards.

Covey says the biggest offences are improper stairs, guards and the way the deck is connected to the house.

Covey says part of the issue is people building without a permit.

"I've got about a 100 times a year that we've got people working without permits that we're catching that are constructing decks."

Darren Smith, who runs Halifax Home Inspections, says the percentage of faulty decks he sees in the city is considerably higher than the city's estimate.

"I'm saying more like 60 or 70 per cent and I think I'm accurate on that just because it's what I do everyday," he says. "Most of the decks built horrible are ones that someone has done themselves."

Amanda Lenko, one of six students injured when a third-storey deck on a house on Brussels Street in Halifax collapsed this September, says the city needs to improve its inspection service.

Jacksonville PorchFest invites you to Springfield to walk, look and listen.

The music festival and celebration of architecture involves 15 front porches along a route on the east side of Main Street.

You are the roving audience that strolls from porch to porch, stopping on the sidewalk or lawn to hear local musicians play everything from reggae and salsa to bluegrass and country to classical and pop.

While doing so, youre also encouraged to take in the architectural styles reflected in the porches featured on the route.

In the process, organizers hope youll get a sense of the friendly front-porch living that can be found in a neighborhood like Springfield.

Jacksonville PorchFest is from noon to 5 p.m. Saturday. A total of 20 musical acts are scheduled to perform. Food trucks and vendors open for business at noon, and the music performances begin at 1 p.m.

The free event takes place in Springfields southeast quadrant, east of Main Street and west of Liberty between First and Fifth streets. Parking will be available at a number of empty lots along Main Street.

Maps of porches will be provided at the corner of Third and Main streets.

Weve tried to have a fairly compact route thats easily walkable, said Christina Parrish, a Springfield Preservation and Revitalization board member and the chief organizer of the event.

As the name indicates, the festivals invitation extends citywide, she said. Its not just a Springfield block party.
